DeRulo Tops Hot 100, But Swift Swoops In With Record-Breaking Debut Sum

Jason DeRulo is the fourth artist of 2009 to take their first charting single to No. 1 as his “Whatcha Say” tops the Billboard Hot 100 chart released yesterday (Nov. 5). He replaces fellow newbie Owl City, which sees its “Fireflies” fall to No. 2. Other artists to take their debut single to No. 1 this year were Jay Sean with “Down” (No. 4 this week) and Lady Gaga with “Just Dance.” Gaga, meanwhile, holds at No. 6 with “Paparazzi” and has the Hot Shot Debut at No. 9 with “Bad Romance,” one of the new tracks from her upcoming album re-release “The Fame Monster.” The title opens at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 143,000 downloads.

It is yet another album reissue that leads to the most intriguing Hot 100 happenings however. Taylor Swift, with each of the new tracks on her “Fearless (Platinum Edition)” album, becomes the first artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut five songs within the top 30 in a single week. “Jump Then Fall” fares the best, opening at No. 10, followed by “Untouchable” (No. 19), “The Other Side of the Door” (No. 23), “Superstar” (No. 26) and “Come In With the Rain” (No. 30). Those tracks join four other Swift singles on the list. “Forever & Always,” which appears in a redone version on the “Platinum Edition” album, re-enters at No. 34, joining chart holdovers “You Belong With Me” (No. 14) and “Fifteen” (No. 46). She also re-enters as a featured artist on Boys Like Girls’ “Two Is Better Than One” at No. 79.

Swift’s nine chart listings give her the record for most charted titles in a single week by a female artist. Among all artists, the Beatles lead with 14 entries (April 11, 1964).

Back in the top 10, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys jump 13-3 as both the Airplay and Digital Gainer with “Empire State of Mind.” The duo performed the song prior to game 2 of the World Series on Fox on Thursday, Oct. 29, leading to a download spike of 63%. Jay-Z’s prior single “Run This Town,” with Rihanna and Kanye West, dips 5-7.

Miley Cyrus slips 4-5 with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Britney Spears regains her bullet, but holds at No. 8 with “3.”

Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ Lands At No. 1 On Hot 100

Minnesota native Adam Young, better known as Owl City, moves 7-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Fireflies,” his debut effort on the list. The track earns the Digital Gainer honor, moving 2-1 on Digital Songs with 196,000 downloads (up 26%). The track also moves into the top 30 of Radio Songs in just its third week (42-28). The track’s popularity is spurring sales of Owl City’s debut set “Ocean Eyes” as it leaps into the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Last week’s No. 1, Jay Sean’s “Down,” falls two slots to No. 3, leaving Jason DeRulo in the runner-up spot for a second week with “Whatcha Say.” Miley Cyrus‘ “Party In The U.S.A.” slips one place (3-4) as does “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West (4-5).

Lady Gaga remains at No. 6 with “Papparazzi” and the Black Eyed Peas move 9-7 with “Meet Me Halfway” and fall 8-9 with “I Gotta Feeling.” The latter track has appeared in the top 10 in each of its 20 weeks on the chart.

Rounding out the top 10 are Britney Spears‘ “3″ which slides 5-8 and Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” which enters the top 10 (11-10) as the Airplay Gainer. “Dreams” is Beyonce’s 13th top 10 this decade, tying her for second most in the 2000’s.

Usher’s “Papers” delivers the chart’s biggest position increase (92-31) fueled by first week digital sales (34,000) and a strong airplay bump (48-33 on Radio Songs).

The Glee Cast adds yet another pair of song to their chart tally as its rendition of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” is the Hot Shot Debut at No. 34 and its take on “Bust A Move,” Young MC’s 1989 top 10 hit, comes in at No. 93.

Other notable debuts include Adam Lambert’s first post-”Idol” chart entry at No. 50 with “A Time For Miracles,” a song featured in the upcoming blockbuster film “2012;” Snoop Dogg’s return to the Hot 100 for the first time since “Sensual Seduction” peaked at No. 7 in March 2008 as “Gangsta Luv” lands at No. 57; “Southern Voice,” Tim McGraw’s current top 20 Country hit (No. 16), debuts at No. 61; and T-Pain parlays a Verizon download exclusive (29,000 sold) into a No. 80 entry for “Take Your Shirt Off.”

Rihanna starts off at the lowest end of the chart (No. 100) with “Russian Roulette,” however the bet is that she will quickly rise into the upper reaches as the track will hit digital retail sites next week and will impact her Hot 100 ranking the subsequent week.

Jay Sean Recaptures Hot 100’s Top Slot

Jay Sean’s “Down” returns to the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second time, just one week after Britney Spears‘ No. 1 debut bumped him to runner-up status. A predicted second-week digital sales dip (down 33%) sends Spears’ “3″ to No. 5 on the chart, even with radio play continuing to blossom. The suggestive track rises 49-25 on Hot 100 Airplay with a 44% audience increase.

Between Sean and Spears, Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” climbs 4-2, leapfrogging Miley Cyrus‘ “Party In The U.S.A.” which remains at No. 3. “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West moves up 5-4.

Lady Gaga rebounds 7-6 with “Paparazzi” and takes Greatest Gainer/Airplay status for a fourth straight week, becoming the first female soloist to do so since Beyonce had a six-week streak with “Irreplaceable” in Nov-Dec 2006.

Owl City continues to soar, as “Fireflies” jumps 9-7 on the Hot 100 and 4-2 on Hot Digital Songs.

The Black Eyed Peas occupy the next two slots in the top 10 with “I Gotta Feeling” (6-8) and “Meet Me Halfway” (17-9). The latter track takes the Greatest Gainer/Digital award as it also climbs 17-5 on Hot Digital Songs (up 118%). Sales of “Halfway” were buoyed by the track’s iTunes video premiere and its inclusion in the latest television spot for DirecTV, shown frequently during the MLB Playoffs on TBS and FOX.

Closing out the top 10 is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (8-10).

John Mayer scores his best-ever Hot 100 debut at No. 17 with “Who Says,” the opening single from his upcoming album “Battle Studies,” due Oct. 27. The track also starts at No. 10 on Hot Digital Songs (102,000).

Chamillionaire is back on the Hot 100 as a lead artist for the first time since he topped the list with “Ridin” in June 2006, as his new single “Good Morning” debuts at No. 40.

Also entering the chart are two more “Glee” tracks — “Keep Holding On” and “No Air” at Nos. 56 and 65, respectively — and the first U.S. chart appearance by South Korean pop quintet Wonder Girls, with “Nobody” at No. 76.

Another debut, Usher’s “Papers” at No. 92, should take a nice jump next week, as sales from its digital release will contribute to its ranking for the first time.

Britney Spears, Justin Bieber Score Top Hot 100 Debuts

A s reported yesterday, Britney Spears becomes the first artist in over three years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as her new single, “3,” begins its chart life at the top. The track’s arrival is fueled by 255,000 first-week digital downloads.

“3″ is Spears’ third No. 1, following her 1999 debut single “…Baby One More Time” and last year’s “Womanizer.” The latter set a then-record jump to the top when it soared 96-1 on the Hot 100 chart released exactly one year ago this week. That mark was later bypassed by Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which flew 97-1 in February.

15-year old Canadian singer Justin Bieber has this week’s second best Hot 100 debut, at No. 16 with “One Less Lonely Girl.” The track immediately surpasses Bieber’s current radio single “One Time,” which itself reaches a new peak (26-21). Opening week sales of 113,000 downloads propels “Lonely Girl” to its impressive entry.

The “Glee” cast adds two more debuts to its chart take — now up to nine appearances — as the medleys “It’s My Life/Confessions Part II” (No. 30) and “Halo/Walking On Sunshine” (No. 40) open in the top 40.

Other notable Hot 100 debuts include Chris Brown at No. 52 with “I Can Transform Ya” — his first appearance as a lead artist since encountering legal troubles earlier this year — the incarcerated T.I. at No. 54 with “Hell Of A Life” and the return of OneRepublic at No. 58 with “All The Right Moves.”

Last week’s No. 1, Jay Sean’s “Down,” falls a spot to No. 2 while also pushing Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.” from 2-3. Jason DeRulo holds at No. 4 with “Whatcha Say” while “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West slips 3-5. The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” falls 5-6, moving further away from the No. 1 rung it held for a decade-best 14 weeks.

Lady Gaga is the Hot 100’s Airplay Gainer for a third straight week with “Paparazzi,” though the song also moves down 6-7. Gaga is the only female artist to take the Airplay award for three straight weeks this year, matching her run with “Poker Face” in March and April.

Rounding out the top 10 is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (7-8), Owl City’s “Fireflies” by (11-9) and Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” (9-10). Owl City’s track is the act’s first top 10, earned with its first chart entry. “Fireflies” also moves into the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs with 138,000 downloads. The chart’s Digital Gainer honoree is Iyaz’s “Replay,” which rises 24-12.

The winner of the famous VH1’s dating show “For The Love of Ray J” was Joanna Hernandez aka Cocktail, a part-time cocktail waitress. Cocktail beat her competition: Monica Leon aka “Danger” and Danielle Pastorino aka “Unique” ; and took Ray J home to meet her family.

Ray J and Cocktail are currently happily dating but Cocktail confesses: “Yeah. He’s my boyfriend, and the fact that I’m not seeing my boyfriend as much as I’d like to is different from what I’m used to. I would love to see him every day and have him come home to me every night. But that’s not what it is, and I have to take it for what it is. I’m patiently learning his lifestyle. I expected this, but I’m sad now that I’m going through it. But it just makes the times I see him even more special.”

VH1’s reality show “I Love Money 2” had nineteen contestants drawn from other reality shows like “Flavor of Love,” “Rock of Love,” and “Real Chance of Love” competing for a $250,000 grand prize.

Jay Sean Leads Packed Hot 100 Top Five

As previously reported, Jay Sean has halted the Black Eyed Peas‘ record reign atop the Billboard Hot 100. Sean’s debut single “Down,” featuring Lil Wayne, crowns the list with a 2-1 jump.

The Peas had held steady atop the Hot 100 for 26 consecutive weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” (12) and “I Gotta Feeling (14), smashing the prior mark of 19 straight frames in charge earned by Usher with two tracks in 2004. “Feeling” falls 1-5, the largest drop from the top since Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” dipped 1-6 on the chart dated July 5, 2008.

The battle for Hot 100 supremacy this week was extra fierce, as the chart’s top five titles are separated by the tightest point margin in more than six years. Miley Cyrus‘ “Party in the U.S.A.” pushes 3-2, while also reaching the top 10 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay (12-9). Jay-Z rebounds 4-3, with help from Rihanna and Kanye West, on “Run This Town,” while Jason DeRulo ascends 5-4 with his debut effort, “Whatcha Say.”

Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” takes Greatest Gainer/Airplay honors for a second week, popping 7-6. Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10 are Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (6-7), Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” (9-8), Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” (8-9) and Jay Z and Alicia Keys‘ “Empire State of Mind” (10-10).

The Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award goes to Owl City’s “Fireflies,” which beams 24-11. On Digital Songs, The title jumps 13-5 (125,000 paid downloads, up 82%). Iyaz’s “Replay” also makes a large Hot 100 leap (51-24) on the strength of a digital bump (67,000, up 51%).

Four songs from the cast of the Fox TV breakout hit “Glee” dot the Hot 100. The ensemble bounds 85-28 with its cover of Queen’s 1977 classic “Somebody to Love” and scores the Hot Shot Debut at No. 51 with its update of Heart’s 1987 No. 1 “Alone.” Its remake of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” re-enters at No. 76 after reaching No. 4 in June, and “Maybe This Time,” featuring actress Kristin Chenoweth, opens at No. 88.

Other Hot 100 debuts include Foo Fighters‘ “Wheels” at No. 73. The first single from the band’s “Greatest Hits,” due Nov. 3, soars 11-2 on Rock Songs and 18-5 on Alternative Songs.

At No. 89, Kris Allen arrives with his first post-”American Idol” effort, “Live Like We Were Dying.” He releases his debut album Nov. 17. Fellow pop-rock act Train returns to the Hot 100 for the first time since 2004, as “Hey, Soul Sister” starts at No. 98. The band launches a 28-city tour this month in support of its new album, “Save Me, San Francisco,” due Oct. 27.

Jay Sean will put an end to the Black Eyed Peas‘ record reign atop the Billboard Hot 100 as his “Down” will move into the top slot on the chart to be released tomorrow morning. The Peas had held steady at No. 1 for 26 straight weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” (12 weeks) and “I Gotta Feeling (14 weeks), smashing the prior mark of 19 straight No. 1 frames earned by Usher with a pair of his tracks in 2004.

For Sean, his debut single becomes his first Hot 100 No. 1. The track also climbs to the top of Hot 100 Airplay with a total of 115 million listener impressions and rises 5-3 on Hot Digital Songs, where is has moved 1.5 million downloads since its release.

‘DOWN’ IS UP: What goes up must come down. In this case, it’s because of “Down.”

After a record 26-week reign with “I Gotta Feeling” (the last 14 weeks) and “Boom Boom Pow” (12 weeks directly prior), the Black Eyed Peas cede the Billboard Hot 100 summit at last, as Jay Sean celebrates his first No. 1 with a 2-1 ascent for “Down.”

Tomorrow in Chart Beat, we’ll focus on the song’s Hot 100 coronation. Today, there’s more than enough to focus on regarding another chart that “Down” crowns.

Sean’s career-opening single likewise rises 2-1 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart. Featured artist Lil Wayne also nets his first No. 1 on the tally.

Sean is just the ninth male artist to conquer Pop Songs with his debut entry dating to the survey’s 1992 inception. More than half of the select group has done so, however, since 2005, and the last artist in the exclusive club – Flo Rida – earned the honor with what would become the format’s top song of 2008.

MORE BILLBOARD AWARDS: In addition to Sean’s achievement, Lady Gaga and Beyonce each make milestone moves on Pop Songs, as well, after the artists were honored as Billboard’s Rising Star and Woman of the Year, respectively, Friday (Oct. 2).

Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” pushes 11-7 to become her fourth top 10 on Pop Songs. She is just the fifth female in the chart’s archives to collect at least four top 10s from a debut domestic album, joining Alanis Morissette (five, 1995-96), Christina Aguilera (1999-2000), Gwen Stefani (2005) and Fergie (five, 2006-08).

Beyonce concurrently secures her 10th top 10, as “Sweet Dreams” soars 15-10. The ascent makes “I Am…Sasha Fierce” her first album to yield four Pop Songs top 10s. “If I Were a Boy” reached No. 9, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” spent three weeks at No. 1 and “Halo” hovered for three weeks at a peak of No. 2.

Also notable on Pop Songs is the debut at No. 38 for Britney Spears‘ “3.” The song is Spears’ 24th career entry, most among all artists since she first arrived with “…Baby One More Time” on the chart dated Oct. 24, 1998.

With “3″ topping iTunes’ sales chart following its digital release yesterday (Oct. 6), expect the song to rocket onto next week’s Billboard Hot 100. Spears’ second hits set, “The Singles Collection,” arrives Nov. 24.

“3″ is only the second title to grace Pop Songs whose title consists solely of a single digit. Prince’s “7″ hit No. 3 in 1993.

PERFECT 10: On Country Songs, Carrie Underwood ropes her 10th top 10, as “Cowboy Casanova” climbs 11-8. With the advance, Underwood now stands alone in first-place for most top 10s on the chart among solo women this decade.

Trisha Yearwood placed second with 18 between 1990 and 1999, and Faith Hill, Patty Loveless and Tanya Tucker each posted 14 in that span.

As Underwood notches her latest noteworthy top 10, the performer with the highest such sum among all artists this decade extends his lead. Kenny Chesney collects his 28th top 10 this decade, as “I’m Alive,” with Dave Matthews, lifts 13-9.

Matthews is the first core rock artist to appear in the top 10 of Country Songs since, fittingly, Kid Rock reached No. 4 with “All Summer Long” a year ago this month.

SUPER-STREIS-ED: This week’s Billboard is 200 bursting with all kinds of records. Literally and figuratively. Dating to the chart’s March 24, 1956, launch as a weekly survey, not until this week had eight titles debuted in the top 10. The entire chart’s sum of 43 new entries ranks second only to the 45 arrivals on the Oct. 13, 2007, list.

A look at the elite eight:

No. 1, Barbra Streisand, “Love Is the Answer”
As previously reported, Streisand becomes the only act to collect No. 1 albums in each of the past five decades. Chart Beat reader Larry Cohen of Trumbull, Connecticut notes that by entering the Billboard 200 at the top, Streisand extends the chart record for longest span of No. 1s among women. Starting with “People” on the chart dated October 31, 1964, Streisand’s span of No. 1s now stands at 44 years, 11 months and two weeks (this week’s Billboard charts are dated Oct. 17). Among all artists, Elvis Presley owns the widest wingspan among No. 1s: 46 years, five months and one week (May 5, 1956 through Oct. 12, 2002).

No. 2, Paramore, “Brand New Eyes”
The band’s third album is its first top 10. It’s also the highest-charting set by a female-fronted rock band (not including acts such as Arcade Fire or Skillet, in which both genders share vocals) since Evanescence’s “Open the Door” arrived at No. 1 three years ago this week. Paramore’s performance on MTV’s revived “Unplugged” franchise is viewable here.

No. 3, Mariah Carey, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”
The set concurrently bounds to No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It bowed last week at No. 79 following street date violations. Since R&B/Hip-Hop Albums began employing Nielsen SoundScan data in 1992, only Mary J. Blige, with seven, has more top 10s.

No. 4, Breaking Benjamin, “Dear Agony”

No. 5, Alice in Chains, “Black Gives Way to Blue”
The band revisits the top 10 after a 13-year absence with its first effort featuring vocalist William DuVall. It notched its first top 10 album, “Dirt,” exactly 17 years ago this week.

No. 7, Madonna, “Celebration”
As of last week, the three female artists with the most top 10 albums in the Billboard 200’s history were Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Mariah Carey, respectively. Oddly enough, each artist adds to her sum this week. The totals now stand at 30 top 10s for Streisand, 18 for Madonna and 15 for Carey.

No. 8, Miranda Lambert, “Revolution”
With a No. 1 start on Country Albums, Lambert becomes one of only three artists in the Nielsen SoundScan era to bow atop the tally with their first three chart entries. The previous three-peaters were also solo women: LeAnn Rimes (1996-97) and Gretchen Wilson (2004-07).

No. 9, Selena Gomez & the Scene, “Kiss and Tell”
The Disney star’s debut album features contributions from Matthew Wilder and Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock.

DOUBLE VISION: With so many debuts, highlights on the Billboard 200 aren’t confined solely to the top 10.

Foreigner scores its highest-charting album since 1988, when “Inside Information” reached No. 15, as “Can’t Slow Down” bows at No. 29. The Walmart exclusive is the band’s first studio album featuring vocalist Kelly Hansen.

Foreigner also returns to Adult Contemporary after a 14-year break, as “When It Comes to Love” debuts at No. 28. The group last charted at the format with the No. 8-peaking “Until the End of Time.”

The band that had not impacted the chart since 1995 now finds two of its titles scaling the list: Mariah Carey’s cover of “I Want to Know What Love Is” rises 19-15 in its third week. The original version of the ballad ranks as Foreigner’s second-biggest Adult Contemporary hit, having reached No. 3 in 1985. “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” topped the chart dated May 14, 1988.

SWEET HOME: Fellow veteran acts also make triumphant returns.

Lynyrd Skynyrd visits the Billboard 200 for the first time since 2003, as “Gods & Guns” opens at No. 18. The set is the band’s highest-charting studio effort since “Street Survivors” strode to No. 5 in 1977.

The first holiday album of the season decorates the Billboard 200. Michael McDonald’s “This Christmas” arrives at No. 95. It also opens on the Holiday Albums chart at No. 1.

Singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson notches his highest-charting solo album on the Billboard 200 since 1978’s “Easter Island,” which peaked at No. 86. “Closer to the Bone” starts at No. 167.

JAY: As reported yesterday, one of the Billboard Hot 100’s most extraordinary runs comes to a close this week, as Jay Sean’s “Down” unseats the Black Eyed Peas‘ “I Gotta Feeling” after 14 weeks at No. 1. Having led for 12 weeks directly prior with “Boom Boom Pow,” the Peas end their unprecedented streak of consecutive weeks on top at 26. (The group’s “Meet Me Halfway” does soften the blow, however, charging 47-32).

“Down” is the first Hot 100 No. 1 for Sean and the second for featured artist Lil Wayne, who first led for five weeks last year with “Lollipop.”

Sean is the first male artist to take a debut chart entry to the Hot 100 summit since Flo Rida reigned with “Low,” the top song of last year. He is the 10th lead male (and second Sean) to reign in his first chart appearance this decade:

“Down” is the eighth song to advance to No. 1 in 2009. That’s the lowest number of titles to reach the summit in a year since 2005, when eight cuts ascended to the top during the entire year. The last No. 1 that year, Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us,” climbed to the pinnacle on the chart dated Dec. 31, 2005.

JASON: The Black Eyed Peas established their record run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 dated Aug. 29, when their then-20th straight week on top passed the previous record-holder, Usher’s 19-week streak in 2004. The same week that the Peas rewrote Hot 100 history, so did Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” This week, his title, like the Peas’ reign, also wraps its unmatched longevity mark.

“I’m Yours” departs the Hot 100 after 76 weeks, the longest stay in the chart’s history. The song debuted May 3, 2008, marking a coincidental link to Lil Wayne: the week that “I’m Yours” debuted, Lil Wayne notched his first No. 1, “Lollipop.” The week that “I’m Yours” drops off the chart, Lil Wayne collects his second leader, “Down.”

CHART BEAT BITS: Four songs from the cast of Fox’s “Glee” populate the Hot 100, led by the troupe’s 85-28 vault with its cover of Queen’s No. 13-peaking 1977 classic “Somebody to Love” (besting the legendary group’s own remake with George Michael, which reached No. 30 in 1993). The ensemble also scores the Hot Shot Debut at No. 51 with its update of Heart’s 1987 No. 1 “Alone.” Another artist with ties to Fox arrives at No. 89: reigning “American Idol” champion Kris Allen enters with “Live Like We’re Dying,” the first single from his debut album, due Nov. 17 …

Usher previews his next album with lead single “Papers,” which enters R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at No. 60. The song bows with only two days of tracked airplay and is likely to make a substantial leap next week. Last week, Chris Brown’s “I Can Transform Ya” debuted at No. 92 after one day of airplay. This week, it blasts to No. 26, marking the chart’s loftiest lift in three years …

Since the Smooth Jazz Songs chart debuted four years ago this week, only three women have led the list, and this week, Jessy J becomes the first to rule twice. The Los Angeles-based saxophonist/singer rises 2-1 with “Tropical Rain,” the first song by a female artist to dominate since her own “Tequila Moon” led for seven weeks last year. Mindi Abair and Candy Dulfer, both in 2007, are the only other women to have commanded the chart …

Foo Fighters soar to their 13th top five on Alternative Songs, as “Wheels” zooms 18-5. The act enters a tie with Linkin Park for third-most top fives in the chart’s history. Only Green Day (17) and U2 (16) have more …

A band whose roots date back even earlier in modern rock history than Foo Fighters draws its first Billboard chart ink in 12 years. Liverpool’s Echo and the Bunnymen debut at No. 39 on Hot Singles Sales (viewable at billboard.biz) with “Think I Need It Too.” The act last charted with “I Want to Be There (When You Come),” a No. 26 hit on Alternative Songs in 1997. The Ian McCulloch-led band releases its 11th studio album, “The Fountain,” featuring a collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Tuesday (Oct. 13).

‘Feeling’ Steady: Black Eyed Peas Match Decade Mark On Hot 100

With its 14th week at the Hot 100 summit, “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas matches Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” for longest No. 1 stay this decade. The Peas have now held firm at No. 1 for 26 straight weeks, with “Boom Boom Pow” preceding “Feeling” with a 12-week run, making them the second act in the 51-year history of the Hot 100 to remain at No. 1 for a half a calendar year or more. The other was Usher, who spent 28 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2004 with four tracks.

On the wings of strong first-week download sales (110,000), Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” makes the Hot 100’s biggest leap (96-11). The song opens at No. 8 on Hot Digital Songs, Underwood’s eighth top 10 on that list since it launched in February 25. That sum ties her with Beyonce for second most top 10s among females, trailing only Rihanna who’s reached the upper tier 12 times. “Casanova” previews Underwood’s third studio album, “Play On,” set to hit retail on Nov. 3.

Alicia Keys has the list’s Hot Shot Debut as “Doesn’t Mean Anything” opens at No. 61. In just its second week on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the song surges 32-19 as the Greatest Gainer.

Also new to the Hot 100 are two more tracks from the FOX TV series “Glee.” Covers of Celine Dion’s “Taking Chances” (No. 71) and Queen’s 1977 classic “Somebody To Love” (No. 85) up that show’s chart take to five entries since its May debut. David Nail has another of the seven chart debuts as “Red Line” launches at No. 95. It’s his first Hot 100 appearance and it comes seven years after first reaching the Hot Country Songs chart. Meanwhile, Pink enters at No. 97 with “Funhouse,” the fourth Hot 100 single from her album of the same name. Her last album to place four Hot 100 singles was 2001’s “Missundaztood.”

The Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Airplay winner is Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” which holds at No. 7. The top Digital Gainer is Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” which lifts 10-5, a new peak for the track. Elsewhere in the top 10, Jay Sean’s “Down” returns to No. 2 with “Down,” Miley Cyrus rebounds 6-3 with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Jay-Z steps back with two tracks; “Run This Town” tumbles 2-4 while “Empire State of Mind” slips 5-10. Rounding out the upper tier, Taylor Swift holds at No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay, but falls 4-6 on the main chart, Kings of Leon leap 9-8 with “Use Somebody” and Mariah Carey returns to top 10 territory with “Obsessed” (11-9).

Take the four days leading up to MTV’s recent Video Music Awards.

Beyoncé wraps a run-through of her Radio City Music Hall performance at midnight Thursday evening. Friday morning at 10 a.m., it’s déjà vu as she returns to rehearsal mode. A dressing room break is anything but: chats with MTV personnel about show logistics segue into an editing session for her next project — a DVD culled from a summer stand at the Wynn Las Vegas. Later that evening, Beyoncé makes a surprise appearance at husband Jay-Z’s Sept. 11 Madison Square Garden show. Then right after the VMAs, Beyoncé and her alter ego Sasha Fierce catch a flight to Australia to kick off the next leg of their I Am… world tour.

As she ticks off her jam-packed schedule, an unfrazzled Beyoncé dismisses her multitasking with a laugh: “It’s just one of those grind weeks. It will be less hectic when I’m in Australia.” A world tour is less hectic? Before slipping back into her signature stilettos, Billboard’s 2009 Woman of the Year shares how she balances work and relaxation, feeds her philanthropic passions and envisions her future.

The average person can’t keep up your pace. How do you it?

I’m an all-or-nothing type of woman. Either I’m doing absolutely nothing and relaxing — reading a book, sitting by the ocean and not answering any questions — or else I’m hands-on and giving 100%, working really hard.

I was just on vacation for three weeks after touring for a couple of months. I have to schedule time to rest, rejuvenate and get inspired to work again. Now I’m definitely rested and thank God I had the rest — that’s the only way I would be able to get through a week like this. After three weeks without giving any answers or approvals and no performing, I came back like, “Yes! I’m ready to work!” [laughs]

How do you flip the switch from Beyoncé to Sasha Fierce on tour?

It’s a lot easier than it used to be since I’ve put so many hours into performing; I can make the transition from Beyoncé to Sasha Fierce really fast. I don’t have any crazy rituals beforehand. I get in maybe two-and-a-half to three hours before each show. I do my makeup on tour myself and get my hair done. Then we all come together, say a prayer and do a little stretch. I also do meet-and-greets during which I meet a lot of my fans. I usually meet children from the Make a Wish Foundation. I’ve basically given them an open invitation whenever anyone wants to come. That’s always a highlight of the day for me.

On my days off from the tour, I do a lot of sightseeing. I love to visit churches and museums all over the world. The architecture in America is amazing but in Europe, there’s so much history. I also started riding a bike on my days off with others like my assistant and stylist. It’s amazing how I’m able to ride around on a bike. People kind of see it’s me but since I’m on a bike, they think, “No, it’s not her.” And by the time they realize it’s me, I’m already gone. It’s great to do something normal every day. It keeps me grounded.

What do you do to maintain your tour stamina? I heard a rumor that you run on a treadmill in heels and sing.

[Laughs heartily] No, I don’t run on a treadmill in heels. That’s a bit extreme. But I do practice my choreography in heels. And I have a rule that when I have my heels on, everyone has to have their heels on too. Sometimes the dancers are like, “Oh, God, we hope Beyoncé comes in late,” because I’ll go all day. And in the end, I’ll have blisters and my toes will have bruises. It’s really hard sometimes. I still do all the boring things that everyone else does in regular workouts like squats and the treadmill. But I mainly get in shape from doing the choreography during those long 12-hour rehearsals for two months before a tour.

Next: Beyoncé on making “Single Ladies,” giving back to fans.

Were you surprised by the immense popularity of the “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” video?

Out of all my videos, it was the least expensive and took the least amount of time. And it ended up being the most iconic. I absolutely didn’t expect that — I don’t think anyone did. But I knew exactly what I wanted to do: Keep it simple. I’ve done so many things in videos with different hair and wardrobe changes, different sets and lights. I just wanted to keep this one really minimal. And once we got on the set, it was like, “Wait a minute. This is something special.”

I’d seen this 1969 video [featuring Gwen Verdon], this one take of amazing Bob Fosse choreography set against a white background. And I thought, “Wow, despite all the technology we have now, wouldn’t it be great to just strip it all down — without a bunch of different camera shots and cuts, without any hair and wardrobe changes — and make it all about the performance?” We had exactly 12 hours to film that video. We did it after shooting “If I Were a Boy,” so I used the same director and same crew, renting out a studio in New Jersey. From the black leotards to incorporating some of Fosse’s 1969 choreography into our modern choreography, it was just a conscious effort at keeping everything simple.

Outside of music, you’re committed to several charitable causes. What attracted you to these particular organizations?

I’m like everyone else. There are certain things I’m passionate about that are close to my heart. I’m so inspired by the children in Make a Wish. It gives my life a way bigger purpose when I know I can bring someone joy, especially someone in a hospital whose childhood is basically sacrificed. And their families are sacrificing too. After being in hospitals, dealing with needles, medicines and all the physical and mental pain these kids and families go through…for me to know that I can take them away from that is very important.

Ever since I was 9 years old, I’ve been working with my pastor to help the hungry and homeless. So on every tour, I’ve done something to help fight hunger. And this time we were able to provide 3.5 million meals — that’s such a huge accomplishment. I’m grateful to work with General Mills and Hamburger Helper and be a part of something on such a large scale as Feeding America. I’m just so surprised at how many young people came to the concerts with canned goods and were concerned about this cause. They helped make this happen. It wasn’t me.

Our family charity, the Survivor Foundation, is still growing. Then there’s GEMS [Girls Educational and Mentoring Services]. I saw something about it on television and wanted to help. It’s real important for people not to judge. That’s why I sit down and talk to these ladies about what inspires me to be strong, and they inspire me as well. To talk and cry with these ladies, to hug these ladies and invite them to the shows to hear songs about empowering women to set their own standards in relationships and build self-esteem. Those are things I can share with these young women. These are all things that have something to do with my purpose in life.

Next: Beyoncé on her first fragrance and next movie project.

And you’re just as busy on the entrepreneurial side, dating back to your association with L’Oreal.

I have worked with L’Oreal since I was 18 and it continues to be a great relationship. And with the clothing line that I started with my mother [Tina Knowles], I’m still making sure the brand is true to what I like and what I think my fans will like. Making it affordable for them was very important. At my concerts, we’ve offered seats for $10 so that people who can’t afford it can attend.

I don’t realize all that I do until I do interviews like this. And then I’m like, “Oh, my God, how is this possible?” But I usually break things up and focus on one thing at a time. It is a lot and thank God I love it, because I don’t know how else I would be able to do it. You just make it happen.

Something else that’s about to happen is your new Coty fragrance. Can you give us a sneak preview?

I’ve been partners with and have endorsed different fragrances. But this is my first time developing my own fragrance. I’ve spent over a year having meetings, working with the perfumeries. It’s been really interesting. I’d done a little of that in the past, approving a couple of things here and there. But I’ve been a part of this from ground zero. We’ve gone back and forth and back and forth over and over again to get the perfect fragrance. Everything I love, that’s what this fragrance is. Fragrance makes me feel sexy, so I want my fragrance to be sexy and seductive.

My favorite color is gold and that’s also being incorporated into the project. I grew up playing with my mother’s perfumes and love antique bottles, so I wanted my fragrance to have this antique feeling. The bottle looks like a piece of art. I can’t reveal the name yet, but it comes out early next year. I’ve already shot the commercial.

Have you lined up your next acting gig yet?

I did two movies last year, which was hard because I had the album and a tour. I’m on tour right now until March and I’ll be going back and forth for some of the award shows. So probably next year after the tour something may happen. I’ve gotten a lot of scripts and out of those there are 10 that are very good. So I have to pick the one I really love.

All of the work I’ve put into my films has paid off because the type of scripts I’m getting now has completely changed. I’ve always wanted to do something darker and more dramatic because I’m much better at drama than anything else. I don’t think anyone knew that until I played Etta James; people could see my range. And then I did the other movie, “Obsessed.” It was so much fun, especially the fight scenes. I fell in love with doing those stunts. That was my first time ever doing anything with action in it. Eventually, I would love to do something with a little more action in it.

I’m not in a rush because acting for me is fun — something I do because I enjoy it. I don’t have to do it. So I’m going to be patient and find the right film to work on next year or whenever it works out.

Next: Beyoncé on the future of Sasha Fierce, Destiny’s Child.

Is music still as much fun for you as it was in the beginning?

The truth is I really love what I do. I live for it. I’ve invested so much of myself in my career that I cherish it. I’ve worked too hard to do something to damage what I’ve basically dedicated my life to.

I still definitely get a high every time I get onstage. But it’s not just the performing. It’s also coming up with creative marketing ideas and doing cool collaborations, like my fragrance. I love everything about this.

What else is on your to-do list?

I’m interested in a lot of different things. I’d like to get involved in videogames since I really love Wii Fit. I think it would be a great idea to incorporate choreography because for me my workout is way more fun when it involves dancing as opposed to running on a boring treadmill. So I would love to do some kind of fitness game but incorporate dance and performance into it. I think a lot of women would enjoy that.

I also want to continue to produce films — even if I’m not in them — as well as a documentary on my life. Actually, I’d like to do a film loosely based on my father’s [Mathew Knowles] childhood and school years. He’s had an interesting life. But that will probably be in a couple of years.

Is there a chance you’ll start your own label?

Yes, eventually, when I have time. I’m doing so many things, I have to slow down a bit so I can focus. [laughs]

Have you thought about taking a longer break after this tour?

I think after maybe a month or two months, I’d be really bored. But I don’t see myself working this hard for the rest of my life. It’s just too much to do forever. I thank God I started touring and building a fan base when I was really young. So now if I took off a couple of years, I think I’d still be able to come back, go on tour and do records. I’m still a young woman.

What sparks your creative vision?

I’ve always tried to pick songs and singles that were a part of pop culture, a part of things that people are passionate about and want to talk about and debate. “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” is an uptempo song that’s fun. But it’s also something women go through every day. “Irreplaceable” is also about something people experience every day. More than anything, I always try to challenge myself and do a variety of different things. On “Sasha Fierce,” the slow album showcased my vocal ability a lot more. And I had the uptempo album to showcase the dance.

I’ve tried to be an artist who pays attention to detail and who is also a strong vocalist, performer and songwriter. I’m very happy to see other female artists challenging themselves to do everything. That’s something we started with Destiny’s Child. We were very young, writing and producing our own songs. I’m very proud of that.

What will Beyoncé/Sasha Fierce be doing in five to 10 years?

Probably the same things. But maybe I’ll be spacing it out a little more. [laughs] Not every year; maybe every three years.

Maybe also a mom?

In five years…yes, probably.

Any ideas yet about your next album?

I haven’t actually started writing anything. Maybe after I leave for Australia on the next leg of this tour.

You can’t end this interview without one last question: Any truth to the rumor about a Destiny’s Child reunion tour and/or album?

I don’t know if we would do another record anytime soon. And we haven’t talked about a tour. That’s just been something floating in the media. If people keep talking about it, maybe we’ll do it. If that’s what people want… who knows? But whenever the girls need me or I need the girls, we’re here for each other.

Chart Beat Thursday: Live-Blogging The Hot 100

HOW HOT IS IT?: There’s so much action on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, perhaps it makes the most sense to simply run down the chart’s most notable positions, number-by-number, dissecting the numerous highlights. Kind of like a live blog of the survey, the way you might’ve scanned the tally in pre-Internet times, when you used to go to the local newspaper/cigar store, picked up the latest print issue of Billboard and began perusing it eagerly in a quiet nook. (Only this time, a shop owner won’t yell at you to buy the magazine or get out).

No. 1, “I Gotta Feeling,” the Black Eyed Peas. The quartet leads the Hot 100 for a 25th consecutive week, extending its record streak. The song reigns for a 13th week, one-upping the 12-week lead of prior single “Boom Boom Pow.” Interscope Records likewise adds to its record run at the summit for a record label, ruling for a 26th straight week; Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” led for one frame directly prior to the Peas’ stranglehold. “I Gotta Feeling” is one of nine titles in the Hot 100’s history to hold sway for at least 13 weeks.

No. 4, “You Belong With Me,” Taylor Swift. After becoming the first country artist to win a Moonman at the MTV Video Music Awards Sept. 13, Swift continues breaking through barriers. The song becomes the first country crossover to top Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay (2-1) since the list began incorporating Nielsen BDS-monitored data in 1990 (when Swift was less than a year old). Among country acts since on Radio Songs, Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” (1998), Faith Hill’s “Breathe” (2000) and Swift’s “Love Story” (in March) each reached No. 2.

No. 5, “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z + Alicia Keys. After performing the song to close the VMA festivities, the duo soars 50-5 on the Hot 100 and 23-1 on Digital Songs.

No. 7, “Paparazzi,” Lady Gaga. Further proof that her best new artist win at the VMAs was a smart choice: bounding 11 notches, Lady Gaga joins Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and Fergie as the only women this decade to collect four Hot 100 top 10s from a debut album. “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” each led the chart, and “LoveGame” rose to No. 5.

No. 8, “Forever,” Drake featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem. The superstar track from the upcoming LeBron James documentary “More Than a Game” is one of eight songs to launch in the top 10 this year. Three belong to Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana: “Party in the U.S.A.,” “The Climb” and “He Could Be the One.”

No. 18, “Sweet Dreams,” Beyonce. After graciously allowing Taylor Swift a second chance at an acceptance speech at the VMAs after things went south-by-West for the young country star, Beyonce bounds 15 places for her fifth top 20 hit from “I Am…Sasha Fierce.”

No. 22, “21 Guns,” Green Day. A rise of one more notch will enable the song to join the group of songs whose peak positions are represented in their titles. Prince’s “7″ and Seduction’s “Two to Make It Right” could soon initiate a new member.

No. 37, “Uprising,” Muse. The British rock trio performed the song at the VMAs and released its third album, “The Resistance,” two days later. The single re-enters the Hot 100, while the set blasts onto the Billboard 200 at No. 3, a new career-best peak for Muse on the chart.

No. 49, “I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz. Along with the Black Eyed Peas’ record occupancy at No. 1, Mraz has been rewriting Hot 100 history each week since the multi-format smash logged its 69th chart frame, tying LeAnn Rimes‘ “How Do I Live” for longest chart stay, and then passed it with its 70th week. This week, the song dips from No. 38 in its astonishing 75th week. (Could the end be near for its chart life? Titles more than 20 weeks old are removed from the Hot 100 once they rank below the top 50).

No. 50, “Happy,” Leona Lewis. After commanding the Hot 100 for four weeks last year with “Bleeding Love,” the singer previews her sophomore album, “Echo,” due Nov. 17, with a song she co-wrote with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. On Digital Songs, it starts at No. 22.

No. 66, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” Mariah Carey. The song returns to the Hot 100 24 years and 10 months after Foreigner’s original bowed at No. 45, eventually leading the chart for two weeks. Previously charting with covers of the song were the New Jersey Mass Gospel Choir, who sang on Foreigner’s recording (No. 37 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, 1985), the Barrio Boyz (No. 40 on Tropical Songs, 2001) and Wynonna (No. 14 on Adult Contemporary, 2004).

No. 75, “Meet Me Halfway,” the Black Eyed Peas. Can the group replace itself again on the Hot 100? The journey begins for the third single from “The E.N.D.” On the Pop Songs airplay chart, it debuts at No. 36.

No. 90, “We Weren’t Born to Follow,” Bon Jovi. The New Jersey rockers celebrate 25 years of charting on the Hot 100 with, fittingly, their 25th entry on the list. The song introduces “The Circle,” due Nov. 10.

No. 96, “Cowboy Casanova,” Carrie Underwood. The track’s release to digital retailers Tuesday (Sept. 22) will send the song soaring on next week’s Hot 100 and Digital Songs charts. On Country Songs, the first taste of “Play On,” available Nov. 3, flies 18-11 as the chart’s Greatest Gainer.

No. 99, “Check My Brain,” Alice in Chains. This actually marks the venerable band’s first Hot 100 appearance. In the ’90s, its best-known songs, including 1994’s “No Excuses,” were not released as commercially-available singles and, according to chart rules at the time, were not allowed to rank on the Hot 100 despite their airplay popularity. “Check My Brain” leads Rock Songs for a third week.

(Boy, it’s smoky in here. Let’s see what else is happening before we’re shown the door …)

CHECKING IN: The legendary Chubby Checker celebrates 50 years of charting in Billboard, as “The Fly” debuts on Hot Singles Sales at No. 40. Checker first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 23, 1959, with “The Class.” The original version of “The Fly” reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 in 1961.

Checker’s milestone accomplishment marks the latest lofty honor for the beloved entertainer. Last year, Billboard named his classic “The Twist” the No. 1 song of the Hot 100’s first 50 years.

Upon being apprised of his latest achievement, Checker told Billboard in an e-mail, “It’s so nice to get this kind of recognition, after all these years.”

Checker’s label representative, Gary Lefkowith, adds, “Chubby is so grateful for his continued success; those were the first words out of his mouth. He continues to do so many live dates, as well. Even after 50 years, the shows keep coming. A new gig came in today, and Chubby was so happy because he still loves making music, entertaining people and getting paid for what he loves to do.

“He feels God’s blessings everyday and never takes that for granted.”

SOUNDS LIKE A ‘PLAN’: Nelly Furtado’s first Spanish-language album, “Mi Plan,” opens atop Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums. Lead single “Manos Al Aire” spends a fourth week at No. 1 on Latin Songs.

Furtado’s new set concurrently debuts at No. 39 on the Billboard 200, where all four of her chart entries have reached the top 40. “Whoa, Nelly!” rose to No. 24 in 2001, “Folklore” peaked at No. 38 in 2003 and “Loose” debuted atop the July 1, 2006, tally, totaling 70 chart weeks through Nov. 3, 2007.

KEYS TO THE CHART: Alicia Keys logs her best start on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as “Doesn’t Mean Anything” begins at No. 32. Among her 18 career entries on the chart, “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” represented her prior best blastoff, launching at No. 37 in November 2007.

Keys’ new track, from her upcoming fourth studio album, makes the third-grandest entrance on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs this year. The chart’s current No. 1, Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings,” flew in at No. 22, and Whitney Houston’s “I Look To You” arrived at No. 27.

NEW (AGE) NO. 1: Jim Brickman collects his 14th leader on New Age Albums, as “Beautiful World” commences atop the list. The piano player/songwriter ties Mannheim Steamroller for most No. 1s in the chart’s 21-year history.

Yanni ranks third with 12 New Age toppers, followed by Enya and George Winston (six apiece).

COLOURIZED: Between 1988 and 1993, Living Colour sent four albums onto the Billboard 200. Its first entry, “Vivid,” vaulted the highest, reaching No. 6 on May 6, 1989, the same week that the set’s “Cult of Personality” peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band was named best new artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards.

This week, the New York funk-rockers return after 16 years (they were disbanded between 1995 and 2000). Their fifth studio album, “The Chair in the Doorway,” debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 161.

IN MEMORY, THROUGH MUSIC: Fans bid a fond farewell to two performers.

Following the death Sept. 16 at age 72 of Peter, Paul & Mary’s Mary Travers, the famed folk act’s 2005 collection “The Very Best Of” debuts at No. 29 on Top Pop Catalog Albums (viewable at billboard.biz). The trio had last placed on a Billboard album chart in 1987, when “No Easy Walk to Freedom” spent five weeks on the survey, peaking at No. 173.

Peter, Paul & Mary charted 19 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1962 to 1970, with its last entry, the John Denver composition “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” becoming the group’s sole No. 1.

The passing of actor Patrick Swayze at 57 on Sept. 14 spurred a surge in sales for the soundtrack to his breakthrough movie. The 1987 companion to “Dirty Dancing” re-enters the Soundtracks album chart at No. 13, and the set’s 20th anniversary edition returns at No. 20.

22 years ago this week, the movie’s signature song, Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes‘ “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 73. It would go on to lead the chart dated Nov. 28, 1987.

Beyonce and Lady Gaga were honored today (Oct. 2) with the Woman of the Year and Rising Star awards, respectively, during Billboard’s annual Women In Music luncheon held at New York’s Pierre Hotel.

Lady Gaga, sporting a see-through dress decorated with feathers and human hair, arrived first. “Twelve months ago I never would have imagined being here and receiving this award,” Gaga told Billboard.com.

Inside, Billboard’s Publisher, Howard Appelbaum, gave the welcoming remarks before introducing Bill Werde, Billboard’s Editorial Director. He introduced Billboard’s Women In Music Power Player List, which includes Universal Motown Records President Sylvia Rhone, MTV Chairman/CEO Judy McGrath and William Morris’ Cara Lewis, noting that the 2009 group “was the most diverse yet.”

Werde then introduced Lady Gaga, saying that “She’s procovative, fearless and most importantly, a prodigious songwriter.” After a short speech highlighting all of her achievements in the past year, followed by a video reel, Gaga accepted the award herself. “I didn’t expect to be accepted into the pop community like I have,” Gaga said, holding back tears. “With help from radio program directors, the gay community, fans and people like Billboard we had a remarkable year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Gaga was then interviewed by NBC’s “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb, during which she addressed the cancellation of her upcoming “Fame Kills” tour with Kanye West. “Everyone makes mistakes,” she said of West’s now legendary MTV VMA’s outburst. “It’s unfortunate, but he’s a good person. And I think its important to stand by friends.”

Werde then introduced Billboard’s 2009 Woman of the Year recipient. “It is theoretically possible someone on some other planet had a better year than Beyonce,” he quipped. “But I’m not buying it.”

“It’s obvious how classy she is,” Werde continued about Beyonce, who was accompanied by her mother and father, Matthew and Tina Knowles, and Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child. Beyonce accepted the award, remarking “I am the luckiest woman in the world.”

Beyonce then took the hot seat alongside radio personality and Oprah’s best friend, Gayle King, for a Q&A during which she was probed about her relationship with husband Jay-Z, her position as a role model for young women, and her goals for the future. “I really want to win an Oscar,” she revealed.

The event closed with heart-rending renditions of Beyonce’s hits “Halo” and “Single Ladies,” performed by Staten Island grade schoolers, the P.S. 22 Chorus.

Angel has been in fashion shows, numerous national magazine covers, top principal roles in music videos with major artists, roles in movies, hosting events, and promotional campaigns. Angel has shot for every major urban publication except for two.

I’m originally from Baltimore, MD and because I grew up and army brat I’ve moved to so many different places. I currently live in Tampa, FL, but you can frequently catch me in Jersey/NYC, Bmore, and North Carolina. I’m hoping to add to the list in the near future.

Modeling is what I do full time right now and as frustrating as it can be at times I do love it. I love the shoots because I love to play dress up and play a different role than what I am on the regular. On my even days I’m a great person to be around. I love to laugh and joke, I’m naturally clumsy, I always have a story to tell, I know how to listen to people and give advise, especially my friends, and last but not least….I LOVE MY PETS!! Everyone that knows me knows I’m an animal person. I have 2 Maltese (Boo and Juliette), a Lab/Chow mix (Bear), a cat (Halo), and the new addition the 126lb big baby of a Rotti (Taire). So there is a full house over here. Believe me if I could I would have a zoo. As for my odd days I can be the most grouchy bitch on earth, but only my friends and family know how to deal with me on those days and just brush it off. I love you guys!

Before the modeling began I worked in animal hospitals. That is the other passion in my life. I truly miss the last clinic I was at in NC. I miss my friends at work and there was never a dull day there.

Taylor Swift Climbs Hot 100, Black Eyed Peas Still No. 1

The Black Eyes Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” reigns for a 13th week on the Billboard Hot 100, besting the 12-week stay at the summit of “Boom Boom Pow,” the Peas’ previous single that directly preceded its follow-up at No. 1.

Meanwhile, after becoming the first country artist to win a Moonman at the MTV Video Music Awards Sept. 13, Taylor Swift continues her trailblazing ways, rising to the top of Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay.

With an audience of 117 million, Swift’s “You Belong With Me” edges the Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” by 25,000 impressions for the honor of most-heard song on U.S. radio this week. Swift’s song becomes the first country crossover track to rule Radio Songs since the list began incorporating Nielsen BDS-monitored data in 1990.

Swift’s “You Belong With Me” rebounds 6-4 on the Hot 100.

Like Swift, fellow VMAs performer Jay-Z benefits from added exposure at the festivities, soaring with two tracks in the top five. “Run This Town,” with Rihanna and Kanye West, advances 4-2 with Greatest Gainer/Airplay honors (90 million in all-format audience, up 16%), and “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z’s duet with Alicia Keys, vaults 50-5 with the chart’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award. The latter title rockets 23-1 on Digital Songs with sales of 205,000 downloads (up 374%). The pair performed the song to close the VMAs.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Jay Sean’s “Down” dips 2-3, Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” descends 3-6 and Lady Gaga, best new artist winner at the VMAs, blasts 18-7 with “Paparazzi.”

“Forever,” by Drake featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, launches at No. 8 on the Hot 100. The superstar track previews the upcoming LeBron James documentary, “More Than a Game.”

Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” retreats 5-9 on the Hot 100, and Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” drops 7-10.

Elsewhere on the song charts, two familiar names return to the top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. From its new album “No Regrets,” vocal group All-4-One logs its first entry in 13 years, as “My Child” arrives at No. 88. The band enjoyed multi-format success with the ballads “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That” in the ’90s. At No. 96, Toni Braxton bows with “Yesterday.” The singer, who last appeared on the chart in 2006 and shined on ABC-TV’s “Dancing With the Stars” last year, will release her Atlantic Records debut album next year.

Justin Moore is the first solo male artist to take a track from a debut album to No. 1 on Country Songs in more than three years. “Small Town USA,” from the singer’s eponymous debut, rises 3-1. The last male rookie to achieve the feat? Jason Aldean, who reached the summit with “Why” in May 2006.

On Rock Songs, Death Cab For Cutie blasts in at No. 29 with “Meet Me on the Equinox.” The song previews the Oct. 20 soundtrack “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which will also boast music from Thom Yorke, the Killers, OK Go and Muse.

Flexxing with: Pepita Little

Sassy, charming and sporting a girlish smile with bouncy upswept hairdo, Pepita Little, TVJ’s newest sensation on Intense made her first and exclusive flexx with TEENage.

A Holy Childhood High School alum, this vivacious 18-year-old made no buts about the challenges that she has faced in the realm of entertainment and the pain she bore at the death of her mother when she was only eight years old.

“Mommy was hospitalised for mental problems and died. It’s been hard living without her. But I have tried to get used to it and to move on with my life,” she said during our flexx.

But what else belies the life of this ravishing Jamaican belle?

“Pepita loves music – Lovers Rock, Culture and R&B. I am very vibrant, jovial and moody sometimes, but all in all I am just an average TEENager, who is intensely independent,” she described.

Her walk to national attention was strictly motivated and succeeded by her passion for entertainment and not the stereotypical ‘links’, which she seriously disclaimed.

“I auditioned like everyone else. I was even so very nervous and stiff that I never thought that I would have gotten through. I don’t even know what they saw in me, but I was so happy when I got the call and was told that they selected me out of everybody else who auditioned,” she explained.

While she described her experience as the new Intense host as being “so much fun”, she pleaded for more co-operation and support from the veterans in the industry in grooming interested young people.

“There are so many Jamaican young talents out there. We should start with the youth and mould them into the best that they can be, so that we can move forward as a country,” she pleaded.

While many persons may perceive Pepita as a “party girl,” she stated otherwise. “I am not a party girl. My idea of a good time is really with my family, going hiking and to the beach. Things like ATI are really not my thing,” she clearly underscored.

So what does she do when she is not on Intense?

“I do regular voicing in the studio under the management of Danny Champagne and I am currently working on an album called Diary of a TEENager, which will involve all the songs that I have done so far, like Naive and TEENage Dance Party.”

Pepita likens her musical style to Tanya Stephens, whom she emulates.

“She’s my inspiration because she is really skilled. She tells a story and weaves in everything creatively,” she beamed.

‘Glee’ Songs Liven Up Billboard Hot 100

The top six songs on the Billboard Hot 100 hold steady this week, but the new season of Fox’s “Glee” brings joy to the chart.

The television show’s cast recording of Rihanna’s hit “Take A Bow” is the week’s top debut at No. 46. The song scored 53,000 downloads after the show’s season premiere Sept. 9. “Don’t Stop Believin’,” another song covered by the motley crew of musical misfits on “Glee,” re-enters this week’s chart at No. 78. The cast version of the Journey classic first made its debut on the chart in May after the “Glee” pilot aired, which prompted 177,000 downloads in the chart week that followed.

The Black Eyed Peas are No. 1 again this week with “I Gotta Feeling,” with the track earning Greatest Gainer/Digital honors as Sept. 10 performances on both “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and NBC’s “NFL Kickoff Special” prompt a 32,000 download increase. Oddly enough, with all the success of both “Feeling” and their previous chart-topper “Boom Boom Pow,” this is the first time the Black Eyed Peas have scored the week’s top download gainer with either track.

Jay Sean featuring Lil Wayne’s “Down” holds at No. 2, and Miley Cyrus’ “Party In the U.S.A.” remains at No. 3 this week. The song moved way up on Hot 100 Airplay (35-19), giving Cyrus her third consecutive top 20 hit on that list.

Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West are still at No. 4 with “Run This Town,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” sticks at No. 5, and Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” spends another week at No. 6. Jason Derulo’s “Whatcha Say” climbs 9-7, Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” falls 7-8, Pitbull’s “Hotel Room Service” slips 8-9, and Cobra Starship featuring Leighton Meester’s “Good Girls Go Bad” jumps 13-10.

Elsewhere on the chart, Cascada’s “Evacuate the Dancefloor” climbs 41-39 in search of a repeat of the top 10 success of “Everytime We Touch.” Cascada also scores its third No. 1 on Hot Dance Airplay (2-1).

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” debuts at No. 50 this week, and even though digital downloads from the rapper’s No. 1 album were only available through Rhapsody for all but three days of this tracking period, the song still moved 43,000 tracks. Expect a rise into the top five next week for “Empire State of Mind,” following the rap mogul’s performance on the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13.
Gucci Mane, who also had a digital exclusive for his EP on iTunes beginning Sept. 8, zooms 95-52 with “Wasted.” The track moved 23,000 downloads and moves to the head of the Heatseekers Songs tally with a 12-1 leap.

Owl City’s “Fireflies” soars 82-58, aided by a 46% download jump (to 39,000) for Minnesota native Adam Young.

Chart Beat Thursday: Jay-Z, The Beatles, “Glee”

RUN THIS CHART: With the 400th debut ever at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Jay-Z notches his 11th chart-topping album with “The Blueprint 3.” With his grand entrance, Jay-Z passes Elvis Presley as the solo act with the most No. 1 albums in the 53-year history of the Billboard 200.

Here is a rundown of Jay-Z’s No. 1s on the tally, with multiple-week leaders noted in parentheses:

“The Blueprint 3″ also starts atop R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Rap Albums, Digital Albums and Top Comprehensive Albums. On Rap Songs, the set’s “Run This Town,” with Rihanna and Kanye West, becomes Jay-Z’s first No. 1 since “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” led for nine weeks in 2001.

On the Billboard Hot 100, Jay-Z debuts with two tracks from “The Blueprint 3″ – “Empire State of Mind” (No. 50) and “Young Forever” (No. 75) – upping his total to 58 career charted titles. With the bows, he passes the Rolling Stones (57 entries), Marvin Gaye, Frankie Valli and Dionne Warwick (56 each) and moves into a solo share of eighth-most Hot 100 appearances. (Jay-Z may have passed Presley for most No. 1 albums, but the King maintains a wide lead for most Hot 100 charted songs, with 108).

As for the 400 albums to begin at No. 1 on the Billboard 200: Elton John notched the first, “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” in 1975. (394 of the 400 have arrived since the chart’s May 1991 conversion to Nielsen SoundScan data). In addition to the 400th, Jay-Z also collected the 100th instant No. 1, “Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life.” Ashanti’s “Chapter II” was the 200th in 2003, and Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds” was the 300th three years ago this week.

BEATLES FOR SALE: While his 11th leader on the Billboard 200 lifts him past Elvis Presley for most No. 1s for a solo performer, Jay-Z now stands in second place among all artists for most No. 1s. The only act with more? The group that debuts with two boxed sets in the chart’s top 40: the Beatles, who’ve visited the summit 19 times.

The Fab Four opens at No. 15 with “In Stereo” and No. 40 with “In Mono.” Since the Beatles first entered the Billboard 200 on Feb. 1, 1964, with “Meet the Beatles,” only twice before this week had they debuted simultaneously with multiple releases. Like this week, the previous dates greeted pairs of hits collections. On April 14, 1973, the band’s “1962-1966″ and “1967-1970″ arrived. On April 2, 1988, two volumes of “Past Masters” bowed.

As reported this week on billboard.com, the top-seller of last week’s Beatles reissue series is “Abbey Road,” which debuts at No. 3 on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart. The 1969 release also starts at No. 1 on Top Pop Catalog Albums.

(“Abbey Road” does not appear on the Billboard 200. All of the Beatles’ new individual album reissues are eligible to chart on Top Comprehensive Albums and Top Pop Catalog Albums, both viewable at billboard.biz. The former tally houses all albums, regardless of original release date, and the latter ranks only those 18 months or older. The Billboard 200 sports sets 18 months old or less. Thus, the Beatles’ two new boxed sets, “In Stereo” and “In Mono,” chart on the Billboard 200. On Top Comprehensive Albums and Top Pop Catalog Albums, those releases and the Beatles’ individual album reissues chart).

Not only is “Abbey Road” the third-best selling album in the country, but the Beatles also claim half of the top 10 on Top Comprehensive Albums. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” ranks at No. 5, “The White Album” at No. 7, “Rubber Soul” at No. 8 and “Revolver” at No. 10.

On Top Pop Catalog, the Beatles own nine of the top 10 and 15 of the top 18, a stronghold broken only by sets from another iconic act, Michael Jackson. The Beatles place a record-breaking 16 titles on the 50-position tally, besting their own mark of 12 on Dec. 9, 1995.

On the 200-position Top Comprehensive Albums chart, the Beatles populate 18 rungs, also a record-breaking sum. Previously, Jackson also claimed the most simultaneously-charting sets, placing 12 albums July 25 and last week.

The Beatles’ chart reach this week extends even to the Soundtracks chart. The group monopolizes the top four, leading with 1965’s “Help!”

The newest Rock Band rock band also opens, fittingly, on Rock Albums, where “In Stereo” and “In Mono” start at Nos. 5 and 15, respectively.

ERA OF GOOD ‘FEELING’: While Jay-Z and the Beatles make for a landmark week on the Billboard 200 – and Madonna notches her milestone 40th No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs, as spotlighted in Chart Beat Tuesday – the Black Eyed Peas add further fanfare on the Billboard Hot 100.

“I Gotta Feeling” ties the Peas’ own “Boom Boom Pow” for longest-running Hot 100 No. 1 – 12 weeks – in four years. The tracks own the longest commands since Mariah Carey spent 14 weeks in charge with “We Belong Together” in 2005.

With 24 total weeks on top, extending their Hot 100-record streak for an act, the Black Eyed Peas pass 50 Cent and Nelly for third-most frames at No. 1 this decade. Ahead are only Usher (41) and Beyonce (36).

“I Gotta Feeling” maintains its top ranking by claiming the Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award. Perhaps surprisingly, neither of the Peas’ No. 1s had won the honor in their chart lives until this week.

SAME OLD SONG, PART 1: After the series’ season premiere Sept. 9, the cast of Fox-TV’s “Glee” posts the Hot Shot Debut on the Billboard Hot 100. The troupe’s remake of Rihanna’s 2008 Hot 100 No. 1 “Take a Bow” enters at No. 46. The cast’s version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” simultaneously re-enters at No. 78. The song peaked at No. 4 in June after the show’s pilot episode aired.

The “Glee” cast is the 10th cast to be credited with an entry in the Hot 100’s 51-year history, and eight have appeared since just 2005. (For this item, we’re including only titles listed specifically as by a cast in Billboard’s archives. 1972’s “Day By Day,” for example, is credited exactly to “Godspell,” and, thus, does not make the cut).

Those such acts to stage Hot 100 showings prior to “Glee”? The casts of “Spectacular!” (this March), “High School Musical 3″ (2008), “Camp Rock” (2008), “High School Musical 2″ (2007), “Hairspray” (2007), “High School Musical” (2006), “Rent” (2005), “Grease” (1978’s “Summer Nights,” billed as by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John & Cast) and “You Light Up My Life” (1977’s title track by Kacey Cisyk/Original Cast).

SAME OLD SONG, PART 2: Mariah Carey reaches back for her 49th career entry on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as  “I Want to Know What Love Is” arrives as the list’s Hot Shot Debut at No. 64. Foreigner’s original version of the ballad reached No. 85 on the chart, and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1985.

The second single from “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” due Sept. 29, adds to the singer’s catalog of covers. Carey peaked at No. 11 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with her update of the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” in 1992. In 1994, her remake with Luther Vandross of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross‘ “Endless Love” reached No. 7 on the chart. In 1999, Carey rose to No. 3 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with her take on “I Still Believe,” originally a No. 13 Hot 100 hit by her former employer, Brenda K. Starr.

CHART BEAT BITS: Brooks & Dunn collect their sixth No. 1 on Country Albums with the aptly-titled “#1s … and Then Some.” The set’s bow at No. 1 pushes the pair ahead of Rascal Flatts as the duo or group with the second-most toppers in the chart’s 45-year history. Only Alabama, with 11, has more leaders among duos or groups …

Brooks & Dunn displace Taylor Swift’s “Fearless” from the summit of Country Albums, but the latter artist debuts on the Billboard Hot 100. “Two Is Better Than One” by Boys Like Girls, featuring Swift, enters at No. 92. The song is Swift’s 18th Hot 100 entry and her first as a featured artist …

Legendary duo BeBe & CeCe Winans claim their first No. 1 duet on Gospel Songs, as “Close to You” ascends 2-1. The song previews the siblings’ album “Still,” due Oct. 6 …

A week after Jordin Sparks‘ reworking of Shannon’s ’80s classic “Let the Music Play” debuted on Dance/Club Play Songs, and two weeks after Naturi Naughton returned Irene Cara’s “Fame” to the tally, another evergreen track from the era arrives. Pepper Mashay starts at No. 49 with “Freeway of Love.” Aretha Franklin’s original version reached No. 1 on the chart in 1985. At No. 42, Backstreet Boys make their first Dance/Club Play Songs appearance since 1997 (“Quit Playing Games With My Heart”) with “Straight Through My Heart,” the first single from the Boys-to-men’s forthcoming album, “This Is Us” …

Mariah Carey Returns To Hot 100 Top 10

After eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Obsessed,” Mariah Carey leaps over the top 10 hurdle as the song breaks through to No. 7. “Obsessed” spent the last three weeks at No. 11, just shy of the top tally, but jumps to No. 7 this week – making the song Carey’s 27th top ten on the chart.

That puts her in a tie for fifth place (with Elton John and Janet Jackson) for most top 10s in the history of the Hot 100. Ahead of Carey on the tally are Madonna (37), the Beatles (34) and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder (28 each). “Obsessed” holds at No. 7 on Hot 100 Airplay and returns to the top 10 of Hot Digital Songs (courtesy of 72,000 downloads last week).

No such delay for Jason DeRulo’s debut single “Whatcha Say,” which took just four weeks reach the top 10 – the fastest climb for an artist’s first entry on the Hot 100 since M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” last year. “Whatcha Say” climbs to No. 9 this week from No. 13 last week.

Elsewhere in the top 10, the Black Eyed Peas‘ “I Gotta Feeling” is still at No. 1, followed by Jay Sean feat. Lil Wayne’s “Down” holding at No. 2, Miley Cyrus‘ “Party in the U.S.A.” staying at No. 3, and Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West’s “Run This Town” achieving the week’s greatest airplay gain to jump 6-4.

Kings of Leon drop 4-5 with “Use Somebody,” Taylor Swift falls 5-6 with “You Belong With Me,” Pitbull’s “Hotel Room Service” rising 9-8, and Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” falling 7-10.

Billboard’s Woman of the Year, Beyonce, becomes the fifth female in Hot 100 history to place six songs from one album within the top 40. Her “Sweet Dreams” climbs 46-39 this week. The other women to place six songs from one album in the top 40 of the Hot 100 are Janet Jackson (three times), Shania Twain, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Breaking Benjamin scores the week’s highest debut with “I Will Not Bow” at No. 40, on the strength of 50,000 downloads and a jump in alternative radio airplay. Lady GaGa’s “Paparazzi” is the week’s greatest digital gainer, soaring 74-44 on the Hot 100 with increased airplay and a 52% increase in downloads.

Chart Beat Thursday: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Billie Holiday

SHE’S GOT THE ‘LOOK’: How long had it been since Whitney Houston presided over the Billboard 200? Until this week, the superstar last led when the soundtrack to the “The Bodyguard,” credited as a Houston album in Billboard’s archives, spent its 20th and final week at No. 1 on the chart dated May 29, 1993. That week, a band called Radiohead made its first career appearance on the Billboard 200 with “Pablo Honey,” Tag Team’s “Whoomp! (There It Is)” was the Hot 100’s Hot Shot Debut and Toby Keith notched his first of 33 career top fives on Country Songs.

This week, Houston returns to the Billboard 200 throne, as “I Look to You” roars in at No. 1. ( Click here for Billboard.com’s analysis of Houston’s hefty sales haul that produced the bow).

“I Look to You” becomes Houston’s fourth No. 1 album. Her fab four are:

“Whitney Houston,” 1986 (14 weeks at No. 1)
“Whitney,” 1987 (11 weeks at No. 1)
“The Bodyguard” 1992-93 (20 weeks at No. 1)
“I Look to You” 2009 (1 week to date at No. 1)

“I Look to You” is Houston’s first No. 1-debuting album since “Whitney” 22 years ago. The latter title was also the first album by a woman to begin at No. 1, arriving atop the Billboard 200 dated June 27, 1987.

Despite her lengthy hiatus from the penthouse, Houston’s standing on the chart stretching to her juggernaut of a debut album remains sterling. Since her first week atop the tally on March 8, 1986, here is a look at the artists to spend the most weeks at No. 1:

On R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, “I Look to You” becomes Houston’s fifth No. 1. She previously reigned with “Whitney Houston” (1985), “I’m Your Baby Tonight” (1990-91), “The Bodyguard” (1992-93) and her soundtrack to “The Preacher’s Wife” (1997).

While Houston starts atop the Billboard 200, she posts a new entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at the anchor spot, as “Million Dollar Bill” cashes in at No. 100. The song is her 39th career Hot 100 entry. The new album’s title cut concurrently jumps from No. 98 to No. 70, granting Houston her highest Hot 100 ranking since “Could I Have This Kiss Forever,” with Enrique Iglesias, peaked at No. 52 in 2000.

HIGH-FLYING 7, 27: Whitney Houston isn’t the only female superstar ascending to notable Hot 100 heights.

After spending four of its prior eight chart weeks, including the last three, at No. 11, Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” breaks through the top 10 barrier, rising 11-7.

The track is the Carey’s 27th top 10, lifting her into a three-way tie for fifth-most top 10s since the Hot 100 launched in 1958. She also ties for second-place among women:

“Obsessed” reaches the top 10 thanks to its No. 7 ranking with a bullet on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay and a 12-10 rebound on Digital Songs. With the title’s rise, Carey has now logged time in the top 10 on the Hot 100 in 17 of 20 years since her arrival. Stretching to the bow of “Vision of Love” on the Hot 100 dated June 2, 1990, she’s been absent from the top tier only in 2002, 2004 and 2007.

‘SWEET’ SPOT: Whitney Houston’s chart career began in the ’80s, Mariah Carey’s in the ’90s. Now, how about a diva who soared to solo success this decade?

Beyonce bounces 46-39 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Sweet Dreams.” The song is the sixth top 40 hit from her album “I Am…Sasha Fierce.” The six are, with their peak positions noted:

No. 3, “If I Were a Boy”
No. 1 (four weeks), “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
No. 19, “Diva”
No. 5, “Halo”
No. 39, “Ego”
No. 39 (to date), “Sweet Dreams”

Beyonce becomes just the fifth female artist in the chart’s history to score at least a six-pack of top 40 titles from one album.

Janet Jackson was the first woman to achieve the honor, with all six singles from “Control” reaching the top 20 in 1986-87. The next two albums Jackson released repeated the impressive six-cess. She garnered seven top 10s from “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814″ in 1989-91 (plus the No. 5-peaking Hot 100 Airplay cut “State of the World,” which did not appear on the Hot 100, as commercially unavailable singles were not then allowed on the latter chart). Jackson added six more top 10s (counting the double-sided “You Want This/70’s Love Groove” as one entry, per Hot 100 rules at the time) from “janet.” in 1993-95.

Following Jackson, Shania Twain posted six top 40 hits from “Come On Over” in 1997-99.

This decade, two women prior to Beyonce accomplished the feat. Rihanna collected seven top 20 hits from “Good Girl Gone Bad” (Billboard counts both the original and “Reloaded” edition of the set as one chart entry). Since last November, Taylor Swift has sent six songs from “Fearless” into the top 20.

TOP HOLIDAY ALBUMS: A discount at Amazon’s MP3 store sends a pioneer woman in American music to her highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 in 36 years.

“The Complete Billie Holiday” bows at No. 122, granting the late jazz legend her highest-ranking set since 1973’s “Strange Fruit” reached No. 108.

The new entry is Holiday’s fifth charted album. She first appeared with “The Billie Holiday Story,” her top-peaking set (No. 85), in 1972. Until this week, she had last charted with “Ken Burns Jazz – The Definitive Billie Holiday” in 2001.

(A singer who enjoyed success alongside Holiday moves into the runner-up spot on U.K. Albums. Dame Vera Lynn races 20-2 on the chart with a compilation released to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. Lynn is 92 years young).

REVIVAL: As with Holiday, 1973 also figures into the album that starts on the Billboard 200 at No. 24.

A month after Creedence Clearwater Revival notched its highest-charting set on the Billboard 200 since 1973, its frontman bests the peak of his solo debut from the same year with a sequel set. John Fogerty’s “The Blue Ridge Rangers” reached No. 47 in 36 years ago. This week, the album’s conceptual bookend, “The Blue Ridge Rangers / Rides Again,” arrives 23 spots higher than the peak of its predecessor.

The new release is Fogerty’s eighth straight top 40 album. His current batting streak began with the No. 1 “Centerfield” in 1985.

ALONG COMES MARY MARY: Sister duo Mary Mary earns its second top 10 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, after waiting out the lengthiest climb to the top tier in the survey’s 67-year history.

“God in Me,” featuring Kierra “Kiki” Sheard, lifts 11-10 in its 42nd week. Its trek passes that of R. Kelly’s “Step In the Name of Love,” which reached the top 10 in its 36th week in 2003.

“God in Me” is Mary Mary’s second R&B/Hip-Hop Songs top 10, following its No. 9-peaking chart debut “Shackles (Praise You)” in 2000. The twosome is the only gospel act with multiple top 10s on the chart this decade.

On Gospel Songs, “God in Me” leads for a seventh week. The pair had previously ruled with “Heaven” for 15 weeks in 2005.

CHART BEAT BITS: Shannon’s classic “Let the Music Play” finds new life on Dance/Club Play Songs, as Jordin Sparks‘ “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play),” which borrows the original version’s chorus, enters at No. 48. Shannon’s take spent six weeks atop the Dance/Club Play tally in 1983. Sparks’ new single follows the No. 10-peaking Hot 100 hit “Battlefield,” the title cut from her sophomore album …

Breaking Benjamin’s fifth Hot 100 entry instantly becomes its highest-charting, as “I Will Not Bow” does bow at No. 40. The track, No. 15 on Alternative Songs, debuts at No. 18 on Digital Songs. The quartet releases its fourth studio album, “Dear Agony,” Sept. 29 …

Michael Buble’s new album, “Crazy Love,” doesn’t arrive until Oct. 9, but anticipation for the collection looks strong. The set’s lead single, “Haven’t Met You Yet,” ties Seal’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” for the year’s best start (No. 22) on Adult Contemporary. The track also starts at No. 33 on Digital Songs and No. 65 on the Hot 100. Buble tells Billboard that fans should not be surprised by the new song’s uptempo sound, even if many of his previous hits have been traditional ballads. “I grew up in the ’80s,” he says. “I didn’t grow up in the ’30s. I love great melodies – great pop songs” …

History continues to be re-written on the Hot 100. Updates: the Black Eyed Peas extend their record streak to 23 straight weeks at No. 1, while the act’s label, Interscope, pushes its record run among labels to 24 consecutive frames in charge (Lady Gaga’s Poker Face” began the No. 1 lockdown in April). Concurrently, Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” registers a record-extending 73rd chart week, even bulleting as it rebounds 35-30 …

You’ve known her as Audrey Griswold, Danielle Bowden and Carla Tate, but, this week, actress Juliette Lewis adds a new role: Billboard-charted musician. The film and TV star makes her first appearance on a Billboard music chart, as “Terra Incognita” opens at No. 15 on Heatseekers Albums. Lewis released three albums with her former band the Licks between 2004 and 2006, the last of which featured Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums.

Chart Beat Wednesday: Carrie Underwood, Kings Of Leon, Miley Cyrus

CARRIE ON: Carrie Underwood collects the highest debut by a female artist this year on Country Songs, as “Cowboy Casanova” ropes a No. 26 start. Among all acts, Underwood’s new hit ties Brad Paisley’s “Then” for the year’s second-best bow on Country Songs. Kenny Chesney’s “Out Last Night” began at No. 25 on the April 11, chart.

Dating to the conversion of Country Songs to Nielsen BDS-monitored data on the chart dated Jan. 20, 1990, “Cowboy Casanova” logs the fifth-best entrance for a song by a female artist. And look who has the highest:

No. 20, “So Small,” Carrie Underwood (2007)
No. 21, “All Jacked Up,” Gretchen Wilson (2005)
No. 24, “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!,” Shania Twain (2002)
No. 25, “Love Story,” Taylor Swift (2008)

Just two other songs by women have arrived in the top 30 during the Nielsen BDS era. Notably, the top six have done so this decade. Faith Hill’s “Mississippi Girl” launched at No. 27 in 2005. The only top 30 debut of the ’90s by a female artist? Twain’s “Love Gets Me Every Time,” which opened at No. 29 in 1997.

Just as “So Small” resoundingly heralded the release of Underwood’s sophomore album, “Carnival Ride,” two years ago, “Cowboy Casanova” introduces “Play On,” due Nov. 3.

CHART KINGS: Kings of Leon continue to don more chart crowns. This week, the Followill family quartet rises to the top of Alternative Songs and Adult Top 40 with “Notion” and “Use Somebody,” respectively.

On Alternative Songs, “Notion” (3-1) becomes the band’s third No. 1, all from its fourth album, “Only By the Night.” “Sex On Fire” reigned for eight weeks, and “Use Somebody” ruled for three weeks. The act is the first to earn three leaders from an album since Foo Fighters, whose “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace” yielded “The Pretender,” “Long Road to Ruin” and “Let It Die” in 2007-08.

On Adult Top 40, viewable at billboard.biz, “Use Somebody” rises 2-1. The group’s crossover to adult radio is fortified by the track’s debut at No. 27 on Adult Contemporary.

‘PARTY’ GIRL: Miley Cyrus bounds into the top 10 on Pop Songs/Mainstream Top 40, as “Party in the U.S.A.” pounces 14-10. The song wins the chart’s Greatest Gainer award for a second straight week.

The track is Cyrus’s third top 10 in four tries on Pop Songs. “See You Again” reached No. 4 in April 2008. Three months later, “7 Things” rose to No. 19. This June, “The Climb” climbed to No. 5.

At just five chart weeks, “Party in the U.S.A.” easily marks Cyrus’ swiftest ascent to the top 10. “See You Again” took 13 weeks to reach the top tier, and “The Climb” required 14 frames.

COMPLETE BEAT: After a No. 3 start on the Billboard 200 last week following just three days at retail, Cyrus’ “Time of Our Lives (EP)” grows after a full week of availability. Blocking her path to the summit, however, is the artist who led the Billboard Hot 100 five days after Cyrus was born almost 17 years ago.
