Jay-Z And Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire’ Stays Put On Hot 100

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys (top); Ke$ha
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” holds at No. 1 for a third week on the Billboard Hot 100, increasing its lead over Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” (2-2). Sparked by the pair’s live performance on ABC’s Nov. 22 broadcast of the “American Music Awards,” “Empire State of Mind” also takes the chart’s Digital Gainer honors with 202,000 downloads (up 40%).
Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK” continues its climb and moves up 5-3, while Owl City dips 3-4 with “Fireflies” and Iyaz heads back into the top five with “Replay” (6-5).
In the second half of the Hot 100’s top 10, Jason DeRulo falls 4-6 with “Whatcha Say” and Black Eyed Peas bring “Meet Me Halfway” back into the top 10 for the first time in five weeks (12-7), matching the track’s prior peak.
“Sexy Chick,” French DJ David Guetta’s single featuring Akon, lands the chart’s Airplay Gainer tag, though it moves down a spot from 7-8. Jay Sean’s “Down” re-bullets with a 10-9 move, trading places with Britney Spears’ “3,” which dips to No. 10.
Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s new collaboration is also the chart’s top debut as “Telephone” — from Gaga’s new “The Fame Monster” set — opens at No. 30. The song is one of two debuts on the list for each artist; Lady Gaga’s “Speechless” enters at No. 94, while Beyoncé arrives at No. 65 with anogher Gaga collaboration “Video Phone.” The song appears on the deluxe edition of Beyoncé’s “I Am…Sasha Fierce” and on iTunes as part of a three-song digital single along with two other new tracks.
Of the 28,000 downloads sold for “Video Phone,” 93% are of the new remix. The version sans Gaga, however, is receiving the bulk of the airplay and jumps 52-41 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
Susan Boyle places two tracks from her record-setting debut album, as title cut “I Dreamed A Dream” starts at No. 62 and her Rolling Stones cover “Wild Horses” comes in at No. 98. Combined, the tracks sell 63,000 downloads yet garner only one play (for “Dream”) among the 1,259 radio stations that contribute to the Hot 100 rankings.
Another notable debut is Christian vocalist Francesca Battistelli’s “It’s Your Life” at No. 95. The song was featured on the Nov. 23 series finale of TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” increasing its download take by 440%. Battistelli also posts the best albums sales week of her career, as “My Paper Heart” moves 13,000 (No. 97 on Billboard 200), more than double its best sum from this past May.
Chris Brown Gets Personal With Rihanna On Leaked ‘Graffiti’ Tracks

Though Chris Brown hasn’t discussed the intimate details about his assault of Rihanna in interviews to promote the Dec. 8 release of “Graffiti,” several tracks from the just-leaked album seem to directly address the singer’s feelings about his ex-girlfriend.
“I might have cheated in the beginning/ I was wrong for writing ‘Disturbia’/ But I meant it in ‘Forever’/We were supposed to be together/And I can’t let you go,” Brown sings on “Famous Girl.” The 20-year-old wrote the song “Disturbia” for Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad” album, while “Forever” likely refers to his own hit of the same name that spawned a viral wedding video.
Brown also sings, “Sorry I bust the windows out your car,” on the song, possibly alluding to reports that he smashed the window of a vehicle during an argument with Rihanna that occurred before the February assault.
In addition to “Famous Girl,” Brown dabbles in various influences throughout “Graffiti,” from dance and rock to reggae, pop and of course, R&B. The slow jam “Take My Time” features Tank and recalls Brown’s smooth-talking 2008 single “Take You Down.” On the ’80s-influenced “I.Y.A.,” Brown AutoTune’d voice echoes, “I wanna wake up in your arms.” Producers Da Bizness and Brian Kennedy, who also worked on “Disturbia,” borrow from Eric Prydz’s 2005 European Hot 100 chart-topper “Call on Me” for the dance-R&B track “Pass Out.”
“Wait,” featuring Trey Songz and Game, delivers a thumping beat that rivals “I Can Transform Ya,” Brown’s lead single from “Graffiti” that currently stands at No. 20 on the Hot 100. The ballad “Fallin’ Down” incorporates rock elements and features Brown’s vocals at their most raw. Brown also dabbles in reggae on the song “Brown Skin Girl” featuring Sean Paul.
Like “Famous Girl,” Brown’s second single “Crawl” implies that the singer would like to be reunited with his ex-girlfriend (the song recently entered Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at No. 69). On “Sing Like Me,” however, Brown expresses an entirely different sentiment, boasting about his celebrity status and his skills with women over a beat that harkens R. Kelly’s “Feelin’ on Yo Booty.”
One of the most striking tracks on the album, “I’ll Go” is a lush ballad that creatively blends piano with violins and electric guitar. “There’s a star in the palm of my hand/ And I think it’s yours/ If you don’t want it then I’ll understand/ You deserve much more,” laments Brown.
Other songs on “Graffiti” include the apologetic mid-tempo ballad “So Cold;” the flashy, Plies-assisted “What I Do;” and “Lucky Me,” on which Brown thanks music for keeping him strong.
Beyonce Leads Grammy Nominations, Airborne Toxic Event Learns Live Lessons

Beyonce unsurprisingly leads the pack with 10 nods, followed by Taylor Swift with eight–both women are nominated in all three big categories of album, record and song of the year. Notable omissions were Kanye West, who earned six nominations but was shut out of album of the year after being up for his three previous albums, and Whitney Houston, whose comeback was ignored by Grammy voters. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys‘ “Empire State of Mind” holds atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a second straight week with gains in all chart components: airplay, sales and streaming.
The track’s 10.4 million airplay bump is second only to Ke$ha’s 12 million listener spike for “Tik Tok” which takes the Airplay Gainer award as it rises 10-5.
The Digital Gainer (up 49%) is Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” which makes a heady 11-2 leap on the Hot 100 while surging 5-1 on Digital Songs, her third chart-topper on that list.
Could Gaga’s mid-show performance on ABC’s “American Music Awards” on Nov. 22 have spurred last minute downloads prior to the tracking week’s midnight deadline? Possibly, though radio airplay for the track (up 25%) is certainly a catalyst as well. Regardless, next week’s chart should reflect the full effect of the AMA’s on download sales for the featured acts and their tracks.
Also moving into the top 10 (12-7) is French DJ/Producer David Guetta, with vocal help from Akon, on “Sexy Chick.” The track, which topped Dance/Club Play Songs in October, also makes rare concurrent top 10 jumps on component charts Radio Songs (11-7) and Digital Songs (11-8).
Elsewhere in the top 10, Owl City’s “Fireflies” descends 2-3, staying a spot above Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” (3-4). “Replay” by Iyaz slips 4-6, Lady Gaga is up a rung (9-8) with “Paparazzi,” Britney Spears‘ “3″ has a multiplication type move from 6-9, and “Down” by Jay Sean falls 7-10.
The chart’s Hot Shot Debut belongs to John Mayer’s “Half of My Heart” at No. 25. Since it’s a duet with the red hot Taylor Swift, it’s no surprise this track from the country’s No. 1 album is that set’s most downloaded (No. 12 on Digital Songs, 86,000).
Other notable debuts include four more tracks from the cast of FOX’s “Glee” and three tracks from Justin Bieber. With debuts for “Down To Earth” (No. 79), “Bigger” (No. 94) and “First Dance,” featuring Usher (No. 99), Bieber has now charted with all seven songs from his debut EP “My World.” That set opens at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

Jay-Z Rules Hot 100, Lady Antebellum Jumps Into Top 10

As reported in a breaking Billboard.com news story yesterday, Jay-Z earns his fourth Hot 100 No. 1 with “Empire State of Mind,” his collaboration with Alicia Keys. All of Jay-Z’s four chart-toppers have been collaborations, but this is his first No. 1as a lead or co-billed vocalist. The rap legend’s prior chart-topping entries came as a featured vocalist on Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker” (1999), his now-wife Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” (2003) and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (2007).
“Empire” is also Keys’ fourth overall No. 1, as she previously scaled the list with her debut single “Fallin’” (2001), her duet with Usher, “My Boo,” (2004) and “No One” (2007).
“Empire” takes Hot 100 Airplay Gainer honors as it rises 6-1 on Radio Songs (up 15 million listener impressions to 109.5 million), the largest climb to No. 1 on that chart since Kanye West’s “Stronger” jumped 7-1 in the Oct. 6, 2007, issue.
The other big story within the Hot 100 top 10 is the 22-5 move and a Digital Gainer nod for Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” The act, which won Vocal Group of the Year and Single of the Year (for “I Run To You”) on ABC’s “Country Music Awards” Nov. 11, performed “Need” on the highly rated broadcast.
As a result, digital downloads soared 162% to 157,000, the highest one-week sum for a song by a country group since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003. Among all country acts, only Taylor Swift has moved more downloads for a track in a single week.
Lady Antebellum is also the first country group to reach the Hot 100 top 10 since Dixie Chicks peaked at No. 4 with “Not Ready to Make Nice” in March 2007.
Owl City’s “Fireflies” falls from No. 1 to No. 2 once more, now having spent two single-week stints at the top of the list. Another recent No. 1, Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” holds at No. 3 and Iyaz’s “Replay” remains at No. 4.
Britney Spear’s “3″ rebounds 8-6, “Down” by Jay Sean Featuring Lil Wayne dips 5-7 and Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.” also falls two spots to No. 8. Ke$ha chimes in with her first top 10, “Tik Tok” (14-10), becoming the second female act to score a top 10 with her debut single this year, following Lady Gaga. And she appropriately follows Gaga on this week’s list as “Paparazzi” slips 7-9.
The Glee Cast has charted 14 songs on the Hot 100, and for the first time sees one track move up the chart as the troupe’s cover of the “Wicked” musical’s signature song “Defying Gravity” bounds 99-31. “Gravity’s” gain is a result of a 185% digital spike to 70,000 downloads. Not coincidentally, the “Wicked” Broadway cast album nets its best sales week since last Christmas (6,000; up 85%) and the original “Defying” by Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth has its best download week ever (9,000 downloads).
Hot Shot Debut honors go to “Give It Up To Me” by Shakira Featuring Lil Wayne, the second single from the Latin songstress from her upcoming “She Wolf, due Nov. 23. The track enters the chart with 25,000 first-week downloads and moves 30-29 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.
Another interesting debut comes from California native Anya Marina, who enters at No. 88 with a cover or T.I.’s former No. 1 “Whatever You Like.” Her version was featured in a recent episode of the CW’s “Gossip Girl.”
John Mayer Headed To No. 1 On Billboard 200

The annual onslaught of big album releases has begun in earnest as a bevy of superstar acts are in the hunt for high debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 chart.
John Mayer is on track to debut at No. 1 with “Battle Studies,” which could sell somewhere between 275,000 and 300,000 copies by week’s end on Sunday (Nov. 22), according to industry sources. It will be the singer/songwriter’s second topper, following “Heavier Things” in 2003. “Heavier” bowed in the penthouse with 317,000 copies. Mayer’s last studio set, “Continuum,” entered the chart at No. 2 with 300,000 in 2006.
Mayer will likely lead a parade of who’s-who in music next week on the chart, as another nine albums are on track to debut inside the top 20. Next in line could be Casting Crowns‘ “Until the Whole World Hears,” with possibly as much as 175,000 copies. After that, 50 Cent’s “Before I Self Destruct” and Norah Jones‘ “The Fall” are vying for the third-highest debut, as each are estimated to sell around 150,000 copies.
Tween sensation Justin Bieber’s debut album, “My World,” could shift 100,000 copies while “American Idol” winner Kris Allen may see his debut effort move approximately 90,000 copies. Rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures seems on track to sell about 75,000 with its first effort and Leona Lewis’ second album, “Echo,” may sell 50,000 to 60,000, as will Paul McCartney’s new live set “Good Evening New York City.”
As for the big-selling holdover titles on next week’s list, the largest will be Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas,” which should sell another 100,000 copies. So far in two weeks, it has moved 285,000 copies.
Next week’s chart competes with the Billboard 200 in 2008 when Beyonce’s “I Am … Sasha Fierce” blew in with 482,000 copies and Nickelback’s “Dark Horse” galloped into the runner-up slot with 326,000 copies. All told, the tally greeted six debuts in the top 10 and each of the top seven sets surpassed 100,000 copies.
Nielsen SoundScan’s sales tracking week, as reflected in Billboard’s sales charts, runs from Monday through Sunday of each week. Next week’s album charts will be revealed on Nov. 25 and will reflect data through the week ending Nov. 22.

Rihanna earns her 12th career top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart released today, as “Russian Roulette” rockets 75-9, triggered by first-week download sales of 132,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
“Russian Roulette” also opens at No. 9 on Digital Songs and edges 36-35 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay with 29.4 million audience impressions. The song’s digital release coincided with the singer’s first public comments since being assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in February. Rihanna participated in a three-part interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s “20/20″ and “Good Morning America” Nov. 5 and 6.
Taylor Swift, last night crowned the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year, pushes 46-38 with “Fifteen,” the 13th top 40 hit on the Hot 100 from “Fearless,” extending the record for most such entries from one album (including the set’s “Platinum Edition” re-release) in the chart’s history.
In between the two tracks, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” rises 3-2 with Greatest Gainer/Airplay honors (94.6 million in audience, up 29%). Jay-Z performed the song with his backup singer (and Roc Nation roster member) Bridget Kelly at the Yankees’ victory celebration in New York Nov. 6.
Sean Kingston protégé Iyaz soars 12-4 on the Hot 100 with “Replay,” the chart’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award winner. The track jumps 10-2 on Digital Songs (154,000 downloads sold, up 37%).
While Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” slips 6-7 on the Hot 100, the song becomes the 2009 Billboard Rising Star’s first No. 1 on Radio Songs, where it climbs 2-1 as the only title to break the 100-million-audience-impression barrier this week (104 million).
Britney Spears’ former No. 1 “3″ holds at No. 8 with a bullet, and Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” re-enters the top 10 with an 11-10 advance.
The Hot 100’s Hot Shot Debut belongs to Justin Bieber, whose “Favorite Girl” starts at No. 26. The teen singer’s first two singles bullet at No. 24 (“One Time”) and No. 77 (“One Less Lonely Girl”).
Jay Sean’s second single directly follows Bieber’s arrival, as “Do You Remember,” featuring Sean Paul and Lil Jon, debuts at No. 27.
Also new to the Hot 100 this week are Jason Aldean (“The Truth,” No. 91), Rob Thomas (“Someday,” No. 93), Jake Owen (“Eight Second Ride,” No. 95) and the Glee Cast, featuring two of the series’ stars, Chris Colfer and Lea Michele (“Defying Gravity,” No. 99).
When Beyonce released her latest album, “I Am … Sasha Fierce,” she stated on her official web site, “I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to see the many sides of me. The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid and my music will explain it all. There is no label or tag on my sound.”
As “Sweet Dreams” this week makes its way to the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 29, while remaining bulleted in the top five of the Rhythmic and Hot Dance Airplay radio charts, the four Billboard Hot 100 top 10s from the album clearly represent four very different sides of the superstar’s artistry.
First cut “If I Were a Boy” signaled an intimate, acoustic turn, while “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” oppositely aimed for more core R&B/hip-hop audiences (ultimately becoming a pop-culture crossover smash). “Halo,” co-penned by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, fared best at mainstream top 40 radio, with its lush production and obvious hook. The current “Sweet Dreams” is perhaps the most pure dance song Beyonce has ever released, solo or with Destiny’s Child.
The variety of sounds in the set’s singles follows the tradition of albums that not only produced a bounty of radio hits, but also an artistic mini-reinvention on each track.
Many star acts have drastically evolved over years and albums – the Beatles, Elton John, Chicago, Heart, Sting – but when such a buffet of styles is evident on a single album, the dimensions of an artist’s creativity are magnified.
Here, then, is a sampling of 10 more pop albums over the past 25-plus years whose hit songs showed artists through a different prism with every single. (The philosopher Gump would describe the phenomenon in confectionary terms).
If variety is the spice of life, these artists found recipes for success when mining the many sides of their talents:
Cyndi Lauper, “She’s So Unusual,” 1983-85
Lauper will always be best-known for the joyous kitsch of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” but it was the evergreen ballad follow-up “Time After Time” that became her first Hot 100 No. 1. Third single “She Bop” featured textbook ’80s synthesizers, and “All Through the Night,” written by pop/rock singer-songwriter Jules Shear, found Lauper in a gentle, midtempo groove. The set’s guitar-based fifth hit “Money Changes Everything” took the singer to new heights (No. 37) on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
Bangles, “Different Light,” 1986-87 Prince’s (or “Christopher”’s) pure pop “Manic Monday” gave way to the jangly, Byrds-like “If She Knew What She Wants” (also written by Shear). The quirky “Walk Like an Egyptian” continues to sound unique (Weezer’s current “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” could be a distant descendant), and “Walking Down Your Street” found the band most closely channeling its earlier punk-pop influences.
Madonna, “True Blue,” 1986-87
The Material Girl’s third album showcased more mature sounds than the younger-skewed “Madonna” and “Like a Virgin,” with all five singles reaching the top 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Ballad “Live to Tell” led off, followed by the bouncy “Papa Don’t Preach.” The album’s title cut was reminiscent of ’60s girl-group R&B/pop, and “Open Your Heart” brought Madonna back to her dance roots. By the time the Latin-tinged “La Isla Bonita” topped Adult Contemporary, the musical (and lyrical) experimentation that would infuse later ground-breaking hits like “Vogue” and “Justify My Love” was becoming her trademark.
George Michael, “Faith,” 1987-88
Leaving behind the sugary, Motown-inflected “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Freedom” as the creative force in “Wham!,” Michael ruled the Hot 100 with four No. 1s from his solo debut. Billboard’s top album of 1988 yielded the controversial “I Want Your Sex,” the church organ-driven title cut, gospel anthem “Father Figure,” ethereal ballad “One More Try,” dance jam “Monkey” and swinging lounge number “Kissing a Fool.”
B-52’s, “Cosmic Thing,” 1989-90
The Athens, Georgia, troupe had been beloved in alternative circles for the left-field punk-pop classics “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” until “Love Shack” lifted the band to mainstream stardom. Follow-up single “Roam” balanced the act’s newfound pop success with its rock origins, as did the easy-paced “Deadbeat Club.” The album also produced two rock radio-exclusive hits most reminiscent of the group’s ever-eccentric earlier work: the title track and “Channel Z.”
Paula Abdul, “Spellbound,” 1991-92
After a run of four dance-pop Hot 100 No. 1s from “Forever Your Girl,” Abdul was anything but idle on her sophomore set, beginning with her first hit ballad, “Rush Rush,” which reigned over the Hot 100 for five weeks. “Promise of a New Day” approximated her earlier uptempo smashes, and Abdul then scored with two more keyboard-driven slow songs: “Blowing Kisses in the Wind” and “Will You Marry Me.” “Vibeology” found the singer exploring early-’90s techno territory along the lines of decade-defining hits both before (C&C Music Factory, “Gonna Make You Sweat”) and after (Haddaway, “What Is Love”).
Mariah Carey, “Daydream,” 1995-96
After singles from her earlier albums alternated between soaring ballads and dance fare, “Daydream” foreshadowed that Carey was a butterfly preparing to fly artistically. “Fantasy,” with its sample of Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love,” began her transition to a more R&B-centered sound (“Honey,” “Loverboy” and other collaborations with hip-hop and rap contemporaries would follow), while quintessential Carey ballad “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, became the longest-ruling No. 1 (16 weeks) in Hot 100 history. “Always Be My Baby” melded pop and R&B with an acoustic undertone, and waltzy ballad “Forever” paid tribute to ’50s and ’60s soul standards like “In the Still of the Night” and “Unchained Melody.”
Avril Lavigne, “Let Go,” 2002-03
The then-17-year-old burst onto pop and adult radio with “Complicated” in 2002, and the set’s next two singles illustrated her range. “Sk8er Boi” played up her youthful punk image, while the pendulum shifted with the tender ballad “I’m With You.” Lavigne’s favorite song on the album, fourth single “Losing Grip,” presented a moodier, modern rock-leaning edge reminiscent of tracks on fellow female Canadian trailblazer Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.”
Rihanna, “Good Girl Gone Bad,” 2006-08
Six hits deep, including its “Reloaded” re-release, the album sported styles suitable for pop, R&B, dance and adult radio, starting with the multi-format monster “Umbrella.” “Shut Up and Drive” interpolated New Order’s “Blue Monday,” while “Hate That I Love You” emphasized guest Ne-Yo’s signature adult R&B smoothness. Reviving Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “Don’t Stop the Music” was Rihanna’s furthest foray into dance since her debut hit “Pon De Replay.” “Take a Bow” sent the singer to her highest Adult Contemporary peak (No. 21), and “Disturbia” accentuated synth-pop stylings. The set also included her rhythmic/rock duet with Maroon 5, “If I Never See Your Face Again.” (By the haunting sounds of her new single “Russian Roulette,” it appears that Rihanna’s forthcoming album “Rated R” will continue her penchant for intriguing sonic sojourns).
The Black Eyed Peas, “The E.N.D.,” 2009
Not only did the act make Hot 100 history by remaining atop the chart for 26 consecutive weeks, but the songs that granted the Peas the record also spotlight their unbridled inventiveness. Following the trippy “Boom Boom Pow” and the melodic “I Gotta Feeling,” the group stirs up disco-era grooves with its latest, “Meet Me Halfway.” The album builds upon the variety of Fergie’s 2006 solo debut, “The Dutchess,” which traversed rhythmic/hip-hop (“London Bridge,” “Fergalicious,” “Clumsy”), dance (“Glamorous”) and adult pop (“Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Finally”).
‘This Is It’ Gross now at over $200 Million Worldwide

Michael Jackson’s concert movie “This Is It” has taken more than $200 million at box offices worldwide in the first two weeks of release, the studio behind the movie said on Thursday.
Sony Pictures Entertainment said the movie had grossed $61 million in North America and more than $140 million internationally. Japan ($27.2 million) and the UK ($14.3 million) were particularly strong markets.
The movie is now the 22nd biggest grossing movie worldwide of 2009, according to industry tracker boxofficemojo.com
Sony paid concert promoters AEG and Jackson’s estate about $60 million for the right to make and distribute the movie.
The $200 million plus gross is almost three times more than 2008’s “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” — a movie some box office watchers had used as a benchmark for “This Is It.”
The Jackson film opened on October 28 for a planned two week run but has since been extended until early December.

DeRulo Tops Hot 100, But Swift Swoops In With Record-Breaking Debut Sum

Jason DeRulo is the fourth artist of 2009 to take their first charting single to No. 1 as his “Whatcha Say” tops the Billboard Hot 100 chart released yesterday (Nov. 5). He replaces fellow newbie Owl City, which sees its “Fireflies” fall to No. 2. Other artists to take their debut single to No. 1 this year were Jay Sean with “Down” (No. 4 this week) and Lady Gaga with “Just Dance.” Gaga, meanwhile, holds at No. 6 with “Paparazzi” and has the Hot Shot Debut at No. 9 with “Bad Romance,” one of the new tracks from her upcoming album re-release “The Fame Monster.” The title opens at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 143,000 downloads.
It is yet another album reissue that leads to the most intriguing Hot 100 happenings however. Taylor Swift, with each of the new tracks on her “Fearless (Platinum Edition)” album, becomes the first artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut five songs within the top 30 in a single week. “Jump Then Fall” fares the best, opening at No. 10, followed by “Untouchable” (No. 19), “The Other Side of the Door” (No. 23), “Superstar” (No. 26) and “Come In With the Rain” (No. 30). Those tracks join four other Swift singles on the list. “Forever & Always,” which appears in a redone version on the “Platinum Edition” album, re-enters at No. 34, joining chart holdovers “You Belong With Me” (No. 14) and “Fifteen” (No. 46). She also re-enters as a featured artist on Boys Like Girls’ “Two Is Better Than One” at No. 79.
Swift’s nine chart listings give her the record for most charted titles in a single week by a female artist. Among all artists, the Beatles lead with 14 entries (April 11, 1964).
Back in the top 10, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys jump 13-3 as both the Airplay and Digital Gainer with “Empire State of Mind.” The duo performed the song prior to game 2 of the World Series on Fox on Thursday, Oct. 29, leading to a download spike of 63%. Jay-Z’s prior single “Run This Town,” with Rihanna and Kanye West, dips 5-7.
Miley Cyrus slips 4-5 with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Britney Spears regains her bullet, but holds at No. 8 with “3.”

Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ Lands At No. 1 On Hot 100

Minnesota native Adam Young, better known as Owl City, moves 7-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Fireflies,” his debut effort on the list. The track earns the Digital Gainer honor, moving 2-1 on Digital Songs with 196,000 downloads (up 26%). The track also moves into the top 30 of Radio Songs in just its third week (42-28). The track’s popularity is spurring sales of Owl City’s debut set “Ocean Eyes” as it leaps into the top 10 of the Billboard 200.
Last week’s No. 1, Jay Sean’s “Down,” falls two slots to No. 3, leaving Jason DeRulo in the runner-up spot for a second week with “Whatcha Say.” Miley Cyrus‘ “Party In The U.S.A.” slips one place (3-4) as does “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West (4-5).
Lady Gaga remains at No. 6 with “Papparazzi” and the Black Eyed Peas move 9-7 with “Meet Me Halfway” and fall 8-9 with “I Gotta Feeling.” The latter track has appeared in the top 10 in each of its 20 weeks on the chart.
Rounding out the top 10 are Britney Spears‘ “3″ which slides 5-8 and Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” which enters the top 10 (11-10) as the Airplay Gainer. “Dreams” is Beyonce’s 13th top 10 this decade, tying her for second most in the 2000’s.
Usher’s “Papers” delivers the chart’s biggest position increase (92-31) fueled by first week digital sales (34,000) and a strong airplay bump (48-33 on Radio Songs).
The Glee Cast adds yet another pair of song to their chart tally as its rendition of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” is the Hot Shot Debut at No. 34 and its take on “Bust A Move,” Young MC’s 1989 top 10 hit, comes in at No. 93.
Other notable debuts include Adam Lambert’s first post-”Idol” chart entry at No. 50 with “A Time For Miracles,” a song featured in the upcoming blockbuster film “2012;” Snoop Dogg’s return to the Hot 100 for the first time since “Sensual Seduction” peaked at No. 7 in March 2008 as “Gangsta Luv” lands at No. 57; “Southern Voice,” Tim McGraw’s current top 20 Country hit (No. 16), debuts at No. 61; and T-Pain parlays a Verizon download exclusive (29,000 sold) into a No. 80 entry for “Take Your Shirt Off.”
Rihanna starts off at the lowest end of the chart (No. 100) with “Russian Roulette,” however the bet is that she will quickly rise into the upper reaches as the track will hit digital retail sites next week and will impact her Hot 100 ranking the subsequent week.

Jay Sean Recaptures Hot 100’s Top Slot

Jay Sean’s “Down” returns to the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second time, just one week after Britney Spears‘ No. 1 debut bumped him to runner-up status. A predicted second-week digital sales dip (down 33%) sends Spears’ “3″ to No. 5 on the chart, even with radio play continuing to blossom. The suggestive track rises 49-25 on Hot 100 Airplay with a 44% audience increase.
Between Sean and Spears, Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” climbs 4-2, leapfrogging Miley Cyrus‘ “Party In The U.S.A.” which remains at No. 3. “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West moves up 5-4.
Lady Gaga rebounds 7-6 with “Paparazzi” and takes Greatest Gainer/Airplay status for a fourth straight week, becoming the first female soloist to do so since Beyonce had a six-week streak with “Irreplaceable” in Nov-Dec 2006.
Owl City continues to soar, as “Fireflies” jumps 9-7 on the Hot 100 and 4-2 on Hot Digital Songs.
The Black Eyed Peas occupy the next two slots in the top 10 with “I Gotta Feeling” (6-8) and “Meet Me Halfway” (17-9). The latter track takes the Greatest Gainer/Digital award as it also climbs 17-5 on Hot Digital Songs (up 118%). Sales of “Halfway” were buoyed by the track’s iTunes video premiere and its inclusion in the latest television spot for DirecTV, shown frequently during the MLB Playoffs on TBS and FOX.
Closing out the top 10 is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (8-10).
John Mayer scores his best-ever Hot 100 debut at No. 17 with “Who Says,” the opening single from his upcoming album “Battle Studies,” due Oct. 27. The track also starts at No. 10 on Hot Digital Songs (102,000).
Chamillionaire is back on the Hot 100 as a lead artist for the first time since he topped the list with “Ridin” in June 2006, as his new single “Good Morning” debuts at No. 40.
Also entering the chart are two more “Glee” tracks — “Keep Holding On” and “No Air” at Nos. 56 and 65, respectively — and the first U.S. chart appearance by South Korean pop quintet Wonder Girls, with “Nobody” at No. 76.
Another debut, Usher’s “Papers” at No. 92, should take a nice jump next week, as sales from its digital release will contribute to its ranking for the first time.

A s reported yesterday, Britney Spears becomes the first artist in over three years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as her new single, “3,” begins its chart life at the top. The track’s arrival is fueled by 255,000 first-week digital downloads.
“3″ is Spears’ third No. 1, following her 1999 debut single “…Baby One More Time” and last year’s “Womanizer.” The latter set a then-record jump to the top when it soared 96-1 on the Hot 100 chart released exactly one year ago this week. That mark was later bypassed by Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which flew 97-1 in February.
15-year old Canadian singer Justin Bieber has this week’s second best Hot 100 debut, at No. 16 with “One Less Lonely Girl.” The track immediately surpasses Bieber’s current radio single “One Time,” which itself reaches a new peak (26-21). Opening week sales of 113,000 downloads propels “Lonely Girl” to its impressive entry.
The “Glee” cast adds two more debuts to its chart take — now up to nine appearances — as the medleys “It’s My Life/Confessions Part II” (No. 30) and “Halo/Walking On Sunshine” (No. 40) open in the top 40.
Other notable Hot 100 debuts include Chris Brown at No. 52 with “I Can Transform Ya” — his first appearance as a lead artist since encountering legal troubles earlier this year — the incarcerated T.I. at No. 54 with “Hell Of A Life” and the return of OneRepublic at No. 58 with “All The Right Moves.”
Last week’s No. 1, Jay Sean’s “Down,” falls a spot to No. 2 while also pushing Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.” from 2-3. Jason DeRulo holds at No. 4 with “Whatcha Say” while “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West slips 3-5. The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” falls 5-6, moving further away from the No. 1 rung it held for a decade-best 14 weeks.
Lady Gaga is the Hot 100’s Airplay Gainer for a third straight week with “Paparazzi,” though the song also moves down 6-7. Gaga is the only female artist to take the Airplay award for three straight weeks this year, matching her run with “Poker Face” in March and April.
Rounding out the top 10 is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (7-8), Owl City’s “Fireflies” by (11-9) and Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” (9-10). Owl City’s track is the act’s first top 10, earned with its first chart entry. “Fireflies” also moves into the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs with 138,000 downloads. The chart’s Digital Gainer honoree is Iyaz’s “Replay,” which rises 24-12.

The Peas had held steady atop the Hot 100 for 26 consecutive weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” (12) and “I Gotta Feeling (14), smashing the prior mark of 19 straight frames in charge earned by Usher with two tracks in 2004. “Feeling” falls 1-5, the largest drop from the top since Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” dipped 1-6 on the chart dated July 5, 2008.
The battle for Hot 100 supremacy this week was extra fierce, as the chart’s top five titles are separated by the tightest point margin in more than six years. Miley Cyrus‘ “Party in the U.S.A.” pushes 3-2, while also reaching the top 10 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay (12-9). Jay-Z rebounds 4-3, with help from Rihanna and Kanye West, on “Run This Town,” while Jason DeRulo ascends 5-4 with his debut effort, “Whatcha Say.”
Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” takes Greatest Gainer/Airplay honors for a second week, popping 7-6. Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10 are Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” (6-7), Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” (9-8), Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” (8-9) and Jay Z and Alicia Keys‘ “Empire State of Mind” (10-10).
The Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award goes to Owl City’s “Fireflies,” which beams 24-11. On Digital Songs, The title jumps 13-5 (125,000 paid downloads, up 82%). Iyaz’s “Replay” also makes a large Hot 100 leap (51-24) on the strength of a digital bump (67,000, up 51%).
Four songs from the cast of the Fox TV breakout hit “Glee” dot the Hot 100. The ensemble bounds 85-28 with its cover of Queen’s 1977 classic “Somebody to Love” and scores the Hot Shot Debut at No. 51 with its update of Heart’s 1987 No. 1 “Alone.” Its remake of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” re-enters at No. 76 after reaching No. 4 in June, and “Maybe This Time,” featuring actress Kristin Chenoweth, opens at No. 88.
Other Hot 100 debuts include Foo Fighters‘ “Wheels” at No. 73. The first single from the band’s “Greatest Hits,” due Nov. 3, soars 11-2 on Rock Songs and 18-5 on Alternative Songs.
At No. 89, Kris Allen arrives with his first post-”American Idol” effort, “Live Like We Were Dying.” He releases his debut album Nov. 17. Fellow pop-rock act Train returns to the Hot 100 for the first time since 2004, as “Hey, Soul Sister” starts at No. 98. The band launches a 28-city tour this month in support of its new album, “Save Me, San Francisco,” due Oct. 27.

Jay Sean will put an end to the Black Eyed Peas‘ record reign atop the Billboard Hot 100 as his “Down” will move into the top slot on the chart to be released tomorrow morning. The Peas had held steady at No. 1 for 26 straight weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” (12 weeks) and “I Gotta Feeling (14 weeks), smashing the prior mark of 19 straight No. 1 frames earned by Usher with a pair of his tracks in 2004.

‘DOWN’ IS UP: What goes up must come down. In this case, it’s because of “Down.”
Tomorrow in Chart Beat, we’ll focus on the song’s Hot 100 coronation. Today, there’s more than enough to focus on regarding another chart that “Down” crowns.

The ascent makes “I Am…Sasha Fierce” her first album to yield four Pop Songs top 10s. “If I Were a Boy” reached No. 9, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” spent three weeks at No. 1 and “Halo” hovered for three weeks at a peak of No. 2.
Also notable on Pop Songs is the debut at No. 38 for Britney Spears‘ “3.” The song is Spears’ 24th career entry, most among all artists since she first arrived with “…Baby One More Time” on the chart dated Oct. 24, 1998.
With “3″ topping iTunes’ sales chart following its digital release yesterday (Oct. 6), expect the song to rocket onto next week’s Billboard Hot 100. Spears’ second hits set, “The Singles Collection,” arrives Nov. 24.
“3″ is only the second title to grace Pop Songs whose title consists solely of a single digit. Prince’s “7″ hit No. 3 in 1993.
PERFECT 10: On Country Songs, Carrie Underwood ropes her 10th top 10, as “Cowboy Casanova” climbs 11-8. With the advance, Underwood now stands alone in first-place for most top 10s on the chart among solo women this decade.

Notably, the artist who led the category among women last decade did so with almost three times as many top 10s. Reba McEntire ranked first among solo women in the ’90s with 27 top 10s on Country Songs. Trisha Yearwood placed second with 18 between 1990 and 1999, and Faith Hill, Patty Loveless and Tanya Tucker each posted 14 in that span.
As Underwood notches her latest noteworthy top 10, the performer with the highest such sum among all artists this decade extends his lead. Kenny Chesney collects his 28th top 10 this decade, as “I’m Alive,” with Dave Matthews, lifts 13-9.
Matthews is the first core rock artist to appear in the top 10 of Country Songs since, fittingly, Kid Rock reached No. 4 with “All Summer Long” a year ago this month.

SUPER-STREIS-ED: This week’s Billboard is 200 bursting with all kinds of records. Literally and figuratively. Dating to the chart’s March 24, 1956, launch as a weekly survey, not until this week had eight titles debuted in the top 10. The entire chart’s sum of 43 new entries ranks second only to the 45 arrivals on the Oct. 13, 2007, list.
A look at the elite eight:
No. 1, Barbra Streisand, “Love Is the Answer” As previously reported, Streisand becomes the only act to collect No. 1 albums in each of the past five decades. Chart Beat reader Larry Cohen of Trumbull, Connecticut notes that by entering the Billboard 200 at the top, Streisand extends the chart record for longest span of No. 1s among women. Starting with “People” on the chart dated October 31, 1964, Streisand’s span of No. 1s now stands at 44 years, 11 months and two weeks (this week’s Billboard charts are dated Oct. 17). Among all artists, Elvis Presley owns the widest wingspan among No. 1s: 46 years, five months and one week (May 5, 1956 through Oct. 12, 2002).
No. 2, Paramore, “Brand New Eyes”
The band’s third album is its first top 10. It’s also the highest-charting set by a female-fronted rock band (not including acts such as Arcade Fire or Skillet, in which both genders share vocals) since Evanescence’s “Open the Door” arrived at No. 1 three years ago this week. Paramore’s performance on MTV’s revived “Unplugged” franchise is viewable here.
No. 3, Mariah Carey, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”
The set concurrently bounds to No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It bowed last week at No. 79 following street date violations. Since R&B/Hip-Hop Albums began employing Nielsen SoundScan data in 1992, only Mary J. Blige, with seven, has more top 10s.
No. 4, Breaking Benjamin, “Dear Agony”
The group’s fourth album additionally opens atop Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart (viewable at billboard.biz).
No. 5, Alice in Chains, “Black Gives Way to Blue”
The band revisits the top 10 after a 13-year absence with its first effort featuring vocalist William DuVall. It notched its first top 10 album, “Dirt,” exactly 17 years ago this week.
No. 7, Madonna, “Celebration”
As of last week, the three female artists with the most top 10 albums in the Billboard 200’s history were Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Mariah Carey, respectively. Oddly enough, each artist adds to her sum this week. The totals now stand at 30 top 10s for Streisand, 18 for Madonna and 15 for Carey.
No. 8, Miranda Lambert, “Revolution”
With a No. 1 start on Country Albums, Lambert becomes one of only three artists in the Nielsen SoundScan era to bow atop the tally with their first three chart entries. The previous three-peaters were also solo women: LeAnn Rimes (1996-97) and Gretchen Wilson (2004-07).
No. 9, Selena Gomez & the Scene, “Kiss and Tell”
The Disney star’s debut album features contributions from Matthew Wilder and Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock.
DOUBLE VISION: With so many debuts, highlights on the Billboard 200 aren’t confined solely to the top 10.
Foreigner scores its highest-charting album since 1988, when “Inside Information” reached No. 15, as “Can’t Slow Down” bows at No. 29. The Walmart exclusive is the band’s first studio album featuring vocalist Kelly Hansen.
Foreigner also returns to Adult Contemporary after a 14-year break, as “When It Comes to Love” debuts at No. 28. The group last charted at the format with the No. 8-peaking “Until the End of Time.”
The band that had not impacted the chart since 1995 now finds two of its titles scaling the list: Mariah Carey’s cover of “I Want to Know What Love Is” rises 19-15 in its third week. The original version of the ballad ranks as Foreigner’s second-biggest Adult Contemporary hit, having reached No. 3 in 1985. “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” topped the chart dated May 14, 1988.
SWEET HOME: Fellow veteran acts also make triumphant returns.
Lynyrd Skynyrd visits the Billboard 200 for the first time since 2003, as “Gods & Guns” opens at No. 18. The set is the band’s highest-charting studio effort since “Street Survivors” strode to No. 5 in 1977.
The first holiday album of the season decorates the Billboard 200. Michael McDonald’s “This Christmas” arrives at No. 95. It also opens on the Holiday Albums chart at No. 1.
Singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson notches his highest-charting solo album on the Billboard 200 since 1978’s “Easter Island,” which peaked at No. 86. “Closer to the Bone” starts at No. 167.
JAY: As reported yesterday, one of the Billboard Hot 100’s most extraordinary runs comes to a close this week, as Jay Sean’s “Down” unseats the Black Eyed Peas‘ “I Gotta Feeling” after 14 weeks at No. 1. Having led for 12 weeks directly prior with “Boom Boom Pow,” the Peas end their unprecedented streak of consecutive weeks on top at 26. (The group’s “Meet Me Halfway” does soften the blow, however, charging 47-32).
“Down” is the first Hot 100 No. 1 for Sean and the second for featured artist Lil Wayne, who first led for five weeks last year with “Lollipop.”
Sean is the first male artist to take a debut chart entry to the Hot 100 summit since Flo Rida reigned with “Low,” the top song of last year. He is the 10th lead male (and second Sean) to reign in his first chart appearance this decade:

The last No. 1 that year, Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us,” climbed to the pinnacle on the chart dated Dec. 31, 2005.
JASON: The Black Eyed Peas established their record run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 dated Aug. 29, when their then-20th straight week on top passed the previous record-holder, Usher’s 19-week streak in 2004. The same week that the Peas rewrote Hot 100 history, so did Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” This week, his title, like the Peas’ reign, also wraps its unmatched longevity mark.
“I’m Yours” departs the Hot 100 after 76 weeks, the longest stay in the chart’s history. The song debuted May 3, 2008, marking a coincidental link to Lil Wayne: the week that “I’m Yours” debuted, Lil Wayne notched his first No. 1, “Lollipop.” The week that “I’m Yours” drops off the chart, Lil Wayne collects his second leader, “Down.”
CHART BEAT BITS: Four songs from the cast of Fox’s “Glee” populate the Hot 100, led by the troupe’s 85-28 vault with its cover of Queen’s No. 13-peaking 1977 classic “Somebody to Love” (besting the legendary group’s own remake with George Michael, which reached No. 30 in 1993). ‘Feeling’ Steady: Black Eyed Peas Match Decade Mark On Hot 100

With its 14th week at the Hot 100 summit, “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas matches Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” for longest No. 1 stay this decade. The Peas have now held firm at No. 1 for 26 straight weeks, with “Boom Boom Pow” preceding “Feeling” with a 12-week run, making them the second act in the 51-year history of the Hot 100 to remain at No. 1 for a half a calendar year or more. The other was Usher, who spent 28 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2004 with four tracks.
On the wings of strong first-week download sales (110,000), Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” makes the Hot 100’s biggest leap (96-11). The song opens at No. 8 on Hot Digital Songs, Underwood’s eighth top 10 on that list since it launched in February 25. That sum ties her with Beyonce for second most top 10s among females, trailing only Rihanna who’s reached the upper tier 12 times. “Casanova” previews Underwood’s third studio album, “Play On,” set to hit retail on Nov. 3.
Alicia Keys has the list’s Hot Shot Debut as “Doesn’t Mean Anything” opens at No. 61. In just its second week on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the song surges 32-19 as the Greatest Gainer.
Also new to the Hot 100 are two more tracks from the FOX TV series “Glee.” Covers of Celine Dion’s “Taking Chances” (No. 71) and Queen’s 1977 classic “Somebody To Love” (No. 85) up that show’s chart take to five entries since its May debut. David Nail has another of the seven chart debuts as “Red Line” launches at No. 95. It’s his first Hot 100 appearance and it comes seven years after first reaching the Hot Country Songs chart. Meanwhile, Pink enters at No. 97 with “Funhouse,” the fourth Hot 100 single from her album of the same name. Her last album to place four Hot 100 singles was 2001’s “Missundaztood.”
The Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Airplay winner is Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” which holds at No. 7. The top Digital Gainer is Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” which lifts 10-5, a new peak for the track. Elsewhere in the top 10, Jay Sean’s “Down” returns to No. 2 with “Down,” Miley Cyrus rebounds 6-3 with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Jay-Z steps back with two tracks; “Run This Town” tumbles 2-4 while “Empire State of Mind” slips 5-10. Rounding out the upper tier, Taylor Swift holds at No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay, but falls 4-6 on the main chart, Kings of Leon leap 9-8 with “Use Somebody” and Mariah Carey returns to top 10 territory with “Obsessed” (11-9).

Take the four days leading up to MTV’s recent Video Music Awards.
Beyoncé wraps a run-through of her Radio City Music Hall performance at midnight Thursday evening. Friday morning at 10 a.m., it’s déjà vu as she returns to rehearsal mode. A dressing room break is anything but: chats with MTV personnel about show logistics segue into an editing session for her next project — a DVD culled from a summer stand at the Wynn Las Vegas. Later that evening, Beyoncé makes a surprise appearance at husband Jay-Z’s Sept. 11 Madison Square Garden show. Then right after the VMAs, Beyoncé and her alter ego Sasha Fierce catch a flight to Australia to kick off the next leg of their I Am… world tour.
As she ticks off her jam-packed schedule, an unfrazzled Beyoncé dismisses her multitasking with a laugh: “It’s just one of those grind weeks. It will be less hectic when I’m in Australia.” A world tour is less hectic? As you exhale and ponder that irony, it becomes clear that this is someone who thrives on hard work and fierce determination. Before slipping back into her signature stilettos, Billboard’s 2009 Woman of the Year shares how she balances work and relaxation, feeds her philanthropic passions and envisions her future.
The average person can’t keep up your pace. How do you it?
I’m an all-or-nothing type of woman. Either I’m doing absolutely nothing and relaxing — reading a book, sitting by the ocean and not answering any questions — or else I’m hands-on and giving 100%, working really hard.
I was just on vacation for three weeks after touring for a couple of months. I have to schedule time to rest, rejuvenate and get inspired to work again. Now I’m definitely rested and thank God I had the rest — that’s the only way I would be able to get through a week like this. After three weeks without giving any answers or approvals and no performing, I came back like, “Yes! I’m ready to work!” [laughs]
How do you flip the switch from Beyoncé to Sasha Fierce on tour?
It’s a lot easier than it used to be since I’ve put so many hours into performing; I can make the transition from Beyoncé to Sasha Fierce really fast. I don’t have any crazy rituals beforehand. I get in maybe two-and-a-half to three hours before each show. I do my makeup on tour myself and get my hair done. Then we all come together, say a prayer and do a little stretch. I also do meet-and-greets during which I meet a lot of my fans. I usually meet children from the Make a Wish Foundation. I’ve basically given them an open invitation whenever anyone wants to come. That’s always a highlight of the day for me.
On my days off from the tour, I do a lot of sightseeing. I love to visit churches and museums all over the world. The architecture in America is amazing but in Europe, there’s so much history. I also started riding a bike on my days off with others like my assistant and stylist. It’s amazing how I’m able to ride around on a bike. People kind of see it’s me but since I’m on a bike, they think, “No, it’s not her.” And by the time they realize it’s me, I’m already gone. It’s great to do something normal every day. It keeps me grounded.
What do you do to maintain your tour stamina? I heard a rumor that you run on a treadmill in heels and sing.
[Laughs heartily] No, I don’t run on a treadmill in heels. That’s a bit extreme. But I do practice my choreography in heels. And I have a rule that when I have my heels on, everyone has to have their heels on too. Sometimes the dancers are like, “Oh, God, we hope Beyoncé comes in late,” because I’ll go all day. And in the end, I’ll have blisters and my toes will have bruises. It’s really hard sometimes. I still do all the boring things that everyone else does in regular workouts like squats and the treadmill. But I mainly get in shape from doing the choreography during those long 12-hour rehearsals for two months before a tour.
Were you surprised by the immense popularity of the “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” video?
Out of all my videos, it was the least expensive and took the least amount of time. And it ended up being the most iconic. I absolutely didn’t expect that — I don’t think anyone did. But I knew exactly what I wanted to do: Keep it simple. I’ve done so many things in videos with different hair and wardrobe changes, different sets and lights. I just wanted to keep this one really minimal. And once we got on the set, it was like, “Wait a minute. This is something special.”
I’d seen this 1969 video [featuring Gwen Verdon], this one take of amazing Bob Fosse choreography set against a white background. And I thought, “Wow, despite all the technology we have now, wouldn’t it be great to just strip it all down — without a bunch of different camera shots and cuts, without any hair and wardrobe changes — and make it all about the performance?” We had exactly 12 hours to film that video. We did it after shooting “If I Were a Boy,” so I used the same director and same crew, renting out a studio in New Jersey. From the black leotards to incorporating some of Fosse’s 1969 choreography into our modern choreography, it was just a conscious effort at keeping everything simple.
Outside of music, you’re committed to several charitable causes. What attracted you to these particular organizations?
I’m like everyone else. There are certain things I’m passionate about that are close to my heart. I’m so inspired by the children in Make a Wish. It gives my life a way bigger purpose when I know I can bring someone joy, especially someone in a hospital whose childhood is basically sacrificed. And their families are sacrificing too. After being in hospitals, dealing with needles, medicines and all the physical and mental pain these kids and families go through…for me to know that I can take them away from that is very important.
Ever since I was 9 years old, I’ve been working with my pastor to help the hungry and homeless. So on every tour, I’ve done something to help fight hunger. And this time we were able to provide 3.5 million meals — that’s such a huge accomplishment. I’m grateful to work with General Mills and Hamburger Helper and be a part of something on such a large scale as Feeding America. I’m just so surprised at how many young people came to the concerts with canned goods and were concerned about this cause. They helped make this happen. It wasn’t me.
Our family charity, the Survivor Foundation, is still growing. Then there’s GEMS [Girls Educational and Mentoring Services]. I saw something about it on television and wanted to help. It’s real important for people not to judge. That’s why I sit down and talk to these ladies about what inspires me to be strong, and they inspire me as well. To talk and cry with these ladies, to hug these ladies and invite them to the shows to hear songs about empowering women to set their own standards in relationships and build self-esteem. Those are things I can share with these young women. These are all things that have something to do with my purpose in life.
And you’re just as busy on the entrepreneurial side, dating back to your association with L’Oreal.
I have worked with L’Oreal since I was 18 and it continues to be a great relationship. And with the clothing line that I started with my mother [Tina Knowles], I’m still making sure the brand is true to what I like and what I think my fans will like. Making it affordable for them was very important. At my concerts, we’ve offered seats for $10 so that people who can’t afford it can attend.
I don’t realize all that I do until I do interviews like this. And then I’m like, “Oh, my God, how is this possible?” But I usually break things up and focus on one thing at a time. It is a lot and thank God I love it, because I don’t know how else I would be able to do it. You just make it happen.
Something else that’s about to happen is your new Coty fragrance. Can you give us a sneak preview?
I’ve been partners with and have endorsed different fragrances. But this is my first time developing my own fragrance. I’ve spent over a year having meetings, working with the perfumeries. It’s been really interesting. I’d done a little of that in the past, approving a couple of things here and there. But I’ve been a part of this from ground zero. We’ve gone back and forth and back and forth over and over again to get the perfect fragrance. Everything I love, that’s what this fragrance is. Fragrance makes me feel sexy, so I want my fragrance to be sexy and seductive.
My favorite color is gold and that’s also being incorporated into the project. I grew up playing with my mother’s perfumes and love antique bottles, so I wanted my fragrance to have this antique feeling. The bottle looks like a piece of art. I can’t reveal the name yet, but it comes out early next year. I’ve already shot the commercial.
Have you lined up your next acting gig yet?
I did two movies last year, which was hard because I had the album and a tour. I’m on tour right now until March and I’ll be going back and forth for some of the award shows. So probably next year after the tour something may happen. I’ve gotten a lot of scripts and out of those there are 10 that are very good. So I have to pick the one I really love.
All of the work I’ve put into my films has paid off because the type of scripts I’m getting now has completely changed. I’ve always wanted to do something darker and more dramatic because I’m much better at drama than anything else. I don’t think anyone knew that until I played Etta James; people could see my range. And then I did the other movie, “Obsessed.” It was so much fun, especially the fight scenes. I fell in love with doing those stunts. That was my first time ever doing anything with action in it. Eventually, I would love to do something with a little more action in it.
I’m not in a rush because acting for me is fun — something I do because I enjoy it. I don’t have to do it. So I’m going to be patient and find the right film to work on next year or whenever it works out.
Is music still as much fun for you as it was in the beginning?
The truth is I really love what I do. I live for it. I’ve invested so much of myself in my career that I cherish it. I’ve worked too hard to do something to damage what I’ve basically dedicated my life to.
I still definitely get a high every time I get onstage. But it’s not just the performing. It’s also coming up with creative marketing ideas and doing cool collaborations, like my fragrance. I love everything about this.
What else is on your to-do list?
I’m interested in a lot of different things. I’d like to get involved in videogames since I really love Wii Fit. I think it would be a great idea to incorporate choreography because for me my workout is way more fun when it involves dancing as opposed to running on a boring treadmill. So I would love to do some kind of fitness game but incorporate dance and performance into it. I think a lot of women would enjoy that.
I also want to continue to produce films — even if I’m not in them — as well as a documentary on my life. Actually, I’d like to do a film loosely based on my father’s [Mathew Knowles] childhood and school years. He’s had an interesting life. But that will probably be in a couple of years.
Is there a chance you’ll start your own label?
Yes, eventually, when I have time. I’m doing so many things, I have to slow down a bit so I can focus. [laughs]
Have you thought about taking a longer break after this tour?
I think after maybe a month or two months, I’d be really bored. But I don’t see myself working this hard for the rest of my life. It’s just too much to do forever. I thank God I started touring and building a fan base when I was really young. So now if I took off a couple of years, I think I’d still be able to come back, go on tour and do records. I’m still a young woman.
What sparks your creative vision?
I’ve always tried to pick songs and singles that were a part of pop culture, a part of things that people are passionate about and want to talk about and debate. “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” is an uptempo song that’s fun. But it’s also something women go through every day. “Irreplaceable” is also about something people experience every day. More than anything, I always try to challenge myself and do a variety of different things. On “Sasha Fierce,” the slow album showcased my vocal ability a lot more. And I had the uptempo album to showcase the dance.
I’ve tried to be an artist who pays attention to detail and who is also a strong vocalist, performer and songwriter. I’m very happy to see other female artists challenging themselves to do everything. That’s something we started with Destiny’s Child. We were very young, writing and producing our own songs. I’m very proud of that.
What will Beyoncé/Sasha Fierce be doing in five to 10 years?
Probably the same things. But maybe I’ll be spacing it out a little more. [laughs] Not every year; maybe every three years.
Maybe also a mom?
In five years…yes, probably.
Any ideas yet about your next album?
I haven’t actually started writing anything. Maybe after I leave for Australia on the next leg of this tour.
You can’t end this interview without one last question: Any truth to the rumor about a Destiny’s Child reunion tour and/or album?
I don’t know if we would do another record anytime soon. And we haven’t talked about a tour. That’s just been something floating in the media. If people keep talking about it, maybe we’ll do it. If that’s what people want… who knows? But whenever the girls need me or I need the girls, we’re here for each other.
HOW HOT IS IT?: There’s so much action on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, perhaps it makes the most sense to simply run down the chart’s most notable positions, number-by-number, dissecting the numerous highlights. Kind of like a live blog of the survey, the way you might’ve scanned the tally in pre-Internet times, when you used to go to the local newspaper/cigar store, picked up the latest print issue of Billboard and began perusing it eagerly in a quiet nook. (Only this time, a shop owner won’t yell at you to buy the magazine or get out).
No. 1, “I Gotta Feeling,” the Black Eyed Peas. The quartet leads the Hot 100 for a 25th consecutive week, extending its record streak. The song reigns for a 13th week, one-upping the 12-week lead of prior single “Boom Boom Pow.” Interscope Records likewise adds to its record run at the summit for a record label, ruling for a 26th straight week; Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” led for one frame directly prior to the Peas’ stranglehold. “I Gotta Feeling” is one of nine titles in the Hot 100’s history to hold sway for at least 13 weeks.
No. 4, “You Belong With Me,” Taylor Swift. After becoming the first country artist to win a Moonman at the MTV Video Music Awards Sept. 13, Swift continues breaking through barriers. The song becomes the first country crossover to top Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay (2-1) since the list began incorporating Nielsen BDS-monitored data in 1990 (when Swift was less than a year old). Among country acts since on Radio Songs, Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” (1998), Faith Hill’s “Breathe” (2000) and Swift’s “Love Story” (in March) each reached No. 2.
No. 5, “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z + Alicia Keys. After performing the song to close the VMA festivities, the duo soars 50-5 on the Hot 100 and 23-1 on Digital Songs.
No. 7, “Paparazzi,” Lady Gaga. Further proof that her best new artist win at the VMAs was a smart choice: bounding 11 notches, Lady Gaga joins Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and Fergie as the only women this decade to collect four Hot 100 top 10s from a debut album. “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” each led the chart, and “LoveGame” rose to No. 5.
No. 8, “Forever,” Drake featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem. The superstar track from the upcoming LeBron James documentary “More Than a Game” is one of eight songs to launch in the top 10 this year. Three belong to Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana: “Party in the U.S.A.,” “The Climb” and “He Could Be the One.”
No. 18, “Sweet Dreams,” Beyonce. After graciously allowing Taylor Swift a second chance at an acceptance speech at the VMAs after things went south-by-West for the young country star, Beyonce bounds 15 places for her fifth top 20 hit from “I Am…Sasha Fierce.”
No. 22, “21 Guns,” Green Day. A rise of one more notch will enable the song to join the group of songs whose peak positions are represented in their titles. Prince’s “7″ and Seduction’s “Two to Make It Right” could soon initiate a new member.
No. 37, “Uprising,” Muse. The British rock trio performed the song at the VMAs and released its third album, “The Resistance,” two days later. The single re-enters the Hot 100, while the set blasts onto the Billboard 200 at No. 3, a new career-best peak for Muse on the chart.
No. 49, “I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz. Along with the Black Eyed Peas’ record occupancy at No. 1, Mraz has been rewriting Hot 100 history each week since the multi-format smash logged its 69th chart frame, tying LeAnn Rimes‘ “How Do I Live” for longest chart stay, and then passed it with its 70th week. This week, the song dips from No. 38 in its astonishing 75th week. (Could the end be near for its chart life? Titles more than 20 weeks old are removed from the Hot 100 once they rank below the top 50).
No. 50, “Happy,” Leona Lewis. After commanding the Hot 100 for four weeks last year with “Bleeding Love,” the singer previews her sophomore album, “Echo,” due Nov. 17, with a song she co-wrote with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. On Digital Songs, it starts at No. 22.
No. 66, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” Mariah Carey. The song returns to the Hot 100 24 years and 10 months after Foreigner’s original bowed at No. 45, eventually leading the chart for two weeks. Previously charting with covers of the song were the New Jersey Mass Gospel Choir, who sang on Foreigner’s recording (No. 37 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, 1985), the Barrio Boyz (No. 40 on Tropical Songs, 2001) and Wynonna (No. 14 on Adult Contemporary, 2004).
No. 75, “Meet Me Halfway,” the Black Eyed Peas. Can the group replace itself again on the Hot 100? The journey begins for the third single from “The E.N.D.” On the Pop Songs airplay chart, it debuts at No. 36.
No. 90, “We Weren’t Born to Follow,” Bon Jovi. The New Jersey rockers celebrate 25 years of charting on the Hot 100 with, fittingly, their 25th entry on the list. The song introduces “The Circle,” due Nov. 10.
No. 96, “Cowboy Casanova,” Carrie Underwood. The track’s release to digital retailers Tuesday (Sept. 22) will send the song soaring on next week’s Hot 100 and Digital Songs charts. On Country Songs, the first taste of “Play On,” available Nov. 3, flies 18-11 as the chart’s Greatest Gainer.
No. 99, “Check My Brain,” Alice in Chains. This actually marks the venerable band’s first Hot 100 appearance. In the ’90s, its best-known songs, including 1994’s “No Excuses,” were not released as commercially-available singles and, according to chart rules at the time, were not allowed to rank on the Hot 100 despite their airplay popularity. “Check My Brain” leads Rock Songs for a third week.

CHECKING IN: The legendary Chubby Checker celebrates 50 years of charting in Billboard, as “The Fly” debuts on Hot Singles Sales at No. 40. Checker first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 23, 1959, with “The Class.” The original version of “The Fly” reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 in 1961.
Checker’s milestone accomplishment marks the latest lofty honor for the beloved entertainer. Last year, Billboard named his classic “The Twist” the No. 1 song of the Hot 100’s first 50 years.
Upon being apprised of his latest achievement, Checker told Billboard in an e-mail, “It’s so nice to get this kind of recognition, after all these years.”
Checker’s label representative, Gary Lefkowith, adds, “Chubby is so grateful for his continued success; those were the first words out of his mouth. He continues to do so many live dates, as well. Even after 50 years, the shows keep coming. A new gig came in today, and Chubby was so happy because he still loves making music, entertaining people and getting paid for what he loves to do.
“He feels God’s blessings everyday and never takes that for granted.”
SOUNDS LIKE A ‘PLAN’:Nelly Furtado’s first Spanish-language album, “Mi Plan,” opens atop Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums. Lead single “Manos Al Aire” spends a fourth week at No. 1 on Latin Songs.
Furtado’s new set concurrently debuts at No. 39 on the Billboard 200, where all four of her chart entries have reached the top 40. “Whoa, Nelly!” rose to No. 24 in 2001, “Folklore” peaked at No. 38 in 2003 and “Loose” debuted atop the July 1, 2006, tally, totaling 70 chart weeks through Nov. 3, 2007.
KEYS TO THE CHART: Alicia Keys logs her best start on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as “Doesn’t Mean Anything” begins at No. 32. Among her 18 career entries on the chart, “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” represented her prior best blastoff, launching at No. 37 in November 2007.
Keys’ new track, from her upcoming fourth studio album, makes the third-grandest entrance on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs this year. The chart’s current No. 1, Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings,” flew in at No. 22, and Whitney Houston’s “I Look To You” arrived at No. 27.
NEW (AGE) NO. 1:Jim Brickman collects his 14th leader on New Age Albums, as “Beautiful World” commences atop the list. The piano player/songwriter ties Mannheim Steamroller for most No. 1s in the chart’s 21-year history.
Yanni ranks third with 12 New Age toppers, followed by Enya and George Winston (six apiece).
COLOURIZED: Between 1988 and 1993, Living Colour sent four albums onto the Billboard 200. Its first entry, “Vivid,” vaulted the highest, reaching No. 6 on May 6, 1989, the same week that the set’s “Cult of Personality” peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band was named best new artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards.
This week, the New York funk-rockers return after 16 years (they were disbanded between 1995 and 2000). Their fifth studio album, “The Chair in the Doorway,” debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 161.
IN MEMORY, THROUGH MUSIC: Fans bid a fond farewell to two performers.
Following the death Sept. 16 at age 72 of Peter, Paul & Mary’s Mary Travers, the famed folk act’s 2005 collection “The Very Best Of” debuts at No. 29 on Top Pop Catalog Albums (viewable at billboard.biz). The trio had last placed on a Billboard album chart in 1987, when “No Easy Walk to Freedom” spent five weeks on the survey, peaking at No. 173.
Peter, Paul & Mary charted 19 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1962 to 1970, with its last entry, the John Denver composition “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” becoming the group’s sole No. 1.
The passing of actor Patrick Swayze at 57 on Sept. 14 spurred a surge in sales for the soundtrack to his breakthrough movie. The 1987 companion to “Dirty Dancing” re-enters the Soundtracks album chart at No. 13, and the set’s 20th anniversary edition returns at No. 20.
22 years ago this week, the movie’s signature song, Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes‘ “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 73. It would go on to lead the chart dated Nov. 28, 1987.

Beyonce and Lady Gaga were honored today (Oct. 2) with the Woman of the Year and Rising Star awards, respectively, during Billboard’s annual Women In Music luncheon held at New York’s Pierre Hotel.
Lady Gaga, sporting a see-through dress decorated with feathers and human hair, arrived first. “Twelve months ago I never would have imagined being here and receiving this award,” Gaga told Billboard.com.
Inside, Billboard’s Publisher, Howard Appelbaum, gave the welcoming remarks before introducing Bill Werde, Billboard’s Editorial Director. He introduced Billboard’s Women In Music Power Player List, which includes Universal Motown Records President Sylvia Rhone, MTV Chairman/CEO Judy McGrath and William Morris’ Cara Lewis, noting that the 2009 group “was the most diverse yet.”
Werde then introduced Lady Gaga, saying that “She’s procovative, fearless and most importantly, a prodigious songwriter.” After a short speech highlighting all of her achievements in the past year, followed by a video reel, Gaga accepted the award herself. “I didn’t expect to be accepted into the pop community like I have,” Gaga said, holding back tears. “With help from radio program directors, the gay community, fans and people like Billboard we had a remarkable year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Gaga was then interviewed by NBC’s “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb, during which she addressed the cancellation of her upcoming “Fame Kills” tour with Kanye West. “Everyone makes mistakes,” she said of West’s now legendary MTV VMA’s outburst. “It’s unfortunate, but he’s a good person. And I think its important to stand by friends.”
Werde then introduced Billboard’s 2009 Woman of the Year recipient. “It is theoretically possible someone on some other planet had a better year than Beyonce,” he quipped. “But I’m not buying it.”
“It’s obvious how classy she is,” Werde continued about Beyonce, who was accompanied by her mother and father, Matthew and Tina Knowles, and Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child. Beyonce accepted the award, remarking “I am the luckiest woman in the world.”
Beyonce then took the hot seat alongside radio personality and Oprah’s best friend, Gayle King, for a Q&A during which she was probed about her relationship with husband Jay-Z, her position as a role model for young women, and her goals for the future. “I really want to win an Oscar,” she revealed.
The event closed with heart-rending renditions of Beyonce’s hits “Halo” and “Single Ladies,” performed by Staten Island grade schoolers, the P.S. 22 Chorus.

She has a beautiful face, a Colgate smile to match with a humble, aggressive, smart and very driven attitude. Outside of modeling, Angel is interested in getting into real-estate. She has achieved certain goals in modeling by keeping a professional attitude, staying motivated, following the fashion trends, keeping fit, eating right and consulting with her management team Style Entertainment in order to push her modeling career along. Before the modeling began I worked in animal hospitals. That is the other passion in my life. I truly miss the last clinic I was at in NC. I miss my friends at work and there was never a dull day there.
