Adele No. 1 on Hot 100 as Rihanna, Drake, Justin Bieber Surge
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | October 26, 2011 4:00 EDT
While Adele‘s “Someone Like You” spends a fifth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 song chart, Rihanna makes a play for the top spot, Drake vaults into the top 10 and Justin Bieber decorates the tally with the season’s first holiday hit.
“Someone” commands the Hot 100 for a fifth frame. The ballad holds at No. 2 for a fifth week on Radio Songs (148 million all-format audience impressions, up 3%, according to Nielsen BDS), while slipping 1-3 after four weeks at No. 1 on Digital Songs (173,000, down 16%, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
As Adele’s prior single, “Rolling in the Deep,” led the Hot 100 for seven weeks beginning in May, the singer/songwriter becomes just the fourth woman in the chart’s history to reign for at least five weeks with multiple songs in a year. Beyonce last accomplished the feat with “Crazy in Love,” featuring Jay-Z (eight weeks at No. 1), and “Baby Boy,” featuring Sean Paul (nine), in 2003. Monica ruled with “The Boy Is Mine,” with Brandy (13), and “The First Night” (five) in 1998, while Mariah Carey had sent “Fantasy” (eight) and “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men (the first five of its 16 weeks at No. 1), to the top in 1995.
Rihanna‘s “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, roars 6-2 on the Hot 100. The lead single from “Talk That Talk,” due Nov. 21, and Rihanna’s 20th Hot 100 top 10 lifts 3-1 on Digital Songs (231,000, up 31%) and 15-11 on Radio Songs (70 million, up 20%). “Found” marks Rihanna’s record-extending 11th No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart. Eminem ranks second with seven leaders, followed by Katy Perry and Britney Spears, each with six.

Former four-week Hot 100 No. 1 “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera falls 2-3, as LMFAO‘s “Sexy and I Know It” holds at No. 4 as the chart’s Airplay Gainer, rising 11-10 on Radio Songs (76 million, up 20%).
Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” slips 3-5 on the Hot 100; Gym Class Heroes‘ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5‘s Adam Levine, descends 5-6; David Guetta‘s “Without You,” featuring Usher, remains at No. 7; and, Cobra Starship‘s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi, stays at No. 8.
After debuting last week at No. 97 with partial-week sales, Drake‘s “Make Me Proud,” featuring Nicki Minaj, skyrockets to No. 9 as the Hot 100′s Digital Gainer (166,000, up 607%). The vault ties for the biggest ever by a male, equaling Akon‘s 88-spot blast (95-7) with “Smack That,” featuring Eminem, five years ago this week. Among all artists, the leap of “Proud” is tied for the fourth-greatest, following Kelly Clarkson‘s “My Life Would Suck Without You” (97-1, 2009), Spears’ “Womanizer” (96-1, 2008) and Beyonce and Shakira‘s “Beautiful Liar” (94-3, 2007).
Rounding out the Hot 100′s top 10, LMFAO’s former six-week No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, dips 9-10.
Just outside the Hot 100′s top tier, Justin Bieber scores the top new entry, as “Mistletoe” jingles in with 164,000 in first-week digital sales. Despite a two-month wait until Christmas, anticipation for the teen star’s first holiday set, “Under the Mistletoe,” due Tuesday (Nov. 1), spurs the song’s lofty launch.
Justin Bieber and Usher Team Up for ‘The Christmas Song’: Listen
Upon its entrance, “Mistletoe” is the third-highest-charting holiday hit in the Hot 100′s history, following the Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” (No. 1, four weeks, 1958-59) and New Kids on the Block‘s “This One’s for the Children” (No. 7, 1989). (Variations in chart rules over the years prevented certain seasonal songs from appearing on the list).
Check Billboard.com tomorrow (Oct. 27), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and the Digital Songs and Radio Songs charts, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday.

Rihanna Roars Onto Hot 100 as LMFAO Get ‘Sexy’ in Top 10
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 28, 2011 2:45 EDT

While Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera, spends a fourth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Rihanna and LMFAO make strong cases for future chart domination with their latest singles.
Rihanna charges onto the Hot 100 at No. 16 with “We Found Love” (featuring Scottish DJ Calvin Harris), the first single from her forthcoming sixth studio album. Island Def Jam has not yet confirmed the title of the set, due Nov. 21.
The club-thumping “Found” enters Digital Songs at No. 7 with first-week download sales of 117,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and Radio Songs at No. 75 with 14 million out-of-the-box impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. With the song having been released digitally and to radio Thursday (Sept. 22), next week’s charts will reflect the song’s first full week of sales and airplay activity.
“Found” ties for the second-highest debut of Rihanna’s 31 career Hot 100 entries. She started at a loftier rank only as a guest on Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” which soared in at No. 2 the week of July 10, 2010, before spending seven weeks at the summit. Rihanna’s “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” with Jay-Z and Bono, also opened at No. 16 (Feb. 6, 2010).
New Rihanna Album Will Drop Nov. 21
LMFAO concurrently rockets 25-10 as the Hot 100′s Digital Gainer with “Sexy and I Know It.” The song bounds 15-6 on Digital Songs with 139,000 downloads sold (up 97%). Early airplay is likewise encouraging, as “Sexy” blasts 67-45 in its second week on Radio Songs (27 million, up 55%). The pair’s previous single, “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, led the Hot 100 for six weeks, subsequently earning the honor of Billboard’s top song of the summer.
At just four chart weeks, “Sexy” surges to the Hot 100′s top 10 in less than half the time (nine weeks) it took “Anthem” to reach the top tier.
Rihanna and LMFAO share a degree of separation: “Found” featured artist Harris also guests on “Reminds Me of You” on LMFAO’s “Sorry for Party Rocking” album.
As Rihanna sets up her next album, “Cheers (Drink to That),” from her most recent release “Loud,” reaches a new Hot 100 peak, rising 8-7. The song dips, however, in digital sales (114,000, down 5%) and airplay (60 million, down 6%).
“Jagger,” meanwhile, maintains its command over the Hot 100. The track strengthens its stronghold by posting gains atop Radio Songs (131 million, up 6%) and Digital Songs (233,000, up 5%), marking the song’s best weekly audience and sales sums to-date.
LAST WEEK: Maroon 5, Christina Atop Hot 100 For Third Week
Former Hot 100 No. 1 “Someone Like You” by Adele places at No. 2 for a third week with Airplay Gainer honors for a third time in four weeks. The piano ballad (also being played in remixed form) rockets 9-2 on Radio Songs, improving by 26% to 106 million. The cut’s seven-spot jump on Radio Songs is the greatest to the top two in the chart’s 21-year history; only Kanye West’s “Stronger” (7-1, Oct. 6, 2007) had risen as many as six positions to the top two.
On Digital Songs, “Someone” tallies a third frame at No. 2 (201,000, up 1%) after ruling the list three weeks ago.
Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a fifth week. The song pushes 8-6 on Radio Songs (96 million, up 6%) and remains at No. 3 on Digital Songs (177,000, down 5%).
LMFAO’s “Anthem” (4-4); Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine (5-5); and, Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars (6-6), round out the Hot 100′s static top six.
Between Rihanna’s “Cheers” at No. 7 and LMFAO’s “Sexy” at No. 10 on the Hot 100 are Lady Gaga’s “You and I” (10-8) and Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi (7-9).
In addition to Rihanna’s bow with “Found,” eight other songs enter the Hot 100, three by the “Glee” cast and two by Demi Lovato.
With school back in session, i.e., Fox’s “Glee” returning for a third season last Tuesday (Sept. 20), three titles from the season premiere debut: “It’s Not Unusual” (No. 65), originally Tom Jones’ first Hot 100 hit (No. 10) in 1965; “Hairspray” cut “You Can’t Stop the Beat” (No. 67); and, “We Got the Beat” (No. 83), a No. 2 smash for the Go-Go’s in 1982. “Unusual” leads the way with sales of 40,000; by comparison, the top-selling track from last year’s second-season opener, the troupe’s cover of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” began at No. 21 on the Hot 100 with sales of 106,000.
Lovato debuts on the Hot 100 at No. 69 with “Fix a Heart” (37,000 downloads) and No. 98 with “Unbroken” (24,000). The latter song is the title cut from the singer’s third album, which, as previously reported, begins on the Billboard 200 at No. 4. The set’s first proper single, “Skyscraper,” elevates 61-55 on the Hot 100 after debuting and peaking at No. 10 in July.
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 22) on Billboard.com.

Adele Still Atop Hot 100, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Debut
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | October 19, 2011 6:20 EDT

Contrasting sounds bookend the Billboard Hot 100′s top 10, as Adele‘s sparse piano ballad “Someone Like You” spends a fourth week atop the tally, while rappers Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa soar in at No. 10 with “Young, Wild & Free.”
“Someone” maintains its command atop the chart by logging a fourth frame at No. 1 on Digital Songs (207,000, down 5%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and holding at No. 2 for a fourth week on Radio Songs (144 million all-format audience impressions, up 6%, according to Nielsen BDS).
The Hot 100′s first No. 1 featuring a vocalist backed by only piano accompaniment (although remixes have helped “Someone” cross to formats including rhythmic, dance and Latin) shares space in the top 10 with a high-debuting high-profile rap duet. In a pairing of an icon and one of the genre’s rising stars, Snoop Dogg — who celebrates his 40th birthday today — and Wiz Khalifa enter at No. 10 with “Young, Wild & Free” (featuring Bruno Mars), the first single from the pair’s comedic movie (and soundtrack), “Mac and Devin Go to High School,” due early next year.
Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Bruno Mars Team Up for ‘Young, Wild & Free’
“It’s a great buddy film. Snoop’s the cool guy in school and I’m kind of the nerd,” Khalifa recently told Billboard.com’s The Juice. “We’ve got 10 songs already and we’re using all 10 of them.”
Starting with 159,000 downloads sold, the launch marks Snoop Dogg’s highest Hot 100 debut as a lead act and the 10th top 10 of his 18-year chart career. Khalifa collects his third top 10 and second-highest arrival, after “No Sleep” soared in at No. 6 in April. Mars makes his first top 10 entrance with his seventh top 10.
The Hot 100′s top five remains static, as, below “Someone,” former four-week No. 1 “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera holds at No. 2, followed by Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” (No. 3); LMFAO‘s “Sexy and I Know It” (No. 4); and, Gym Class Heroes‘ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine (No. 5).
Rihanna‘s “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, lifts 7-6 on the Hot 100 with dual Digital and Airplay Gainer honors. The lead single from “Talk That Talk,” due Nov. 21, and Rihanna’s 20th Hot 100 top 10 pushes 5-3 on Digital Songs (174,000, up 21%) and 23-15 on Radio Songs (58 million, up 31%).
Rihanna Escapes Hopelessness in ‘We Found Love’ Video
Between “Found” and Snoop Dogg and Khalifa’s collaboration on the Hot 100, David Guetta‘s “Without You,” featuring Usher, advances 8-7; Cobra Starship‘s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi, edges 9-8; and LMFAO’s former six-week No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, descends 6-9.
Hungry for more Hot 100 headlines, including debuts this week from three superstar females each at least four singles-deep into their latest albums? For all details and the Hot 100 chart in its entirety, check Billboard.com tomorrow (Oct. 20), when all rankings, including Digital and Radio Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday.

Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ Atop Hot 100, Passes 2 Million Downloads
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | October 12, 2011 4:35 EDT
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
- Rihanna’s “We Found Love” inches up 9-7.
- T-Pain’s “5′O’Clock” is the Hot 100′s Digital Gainer, leaping 62-30.
- Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” is the top-selling download of 2011 (5.3 million).
- Another 3rd place showing on Hot 100 for Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.”

Adele‘s “Someone Like You” spends a third week atop the Billboard Hot 100, earning Airplay Gainer honors and racking up more than 2 million downloads sold to-date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The song logs a second frame at No. 1 on Digital Songs (218,000, down 2%). The sum pushes the track’s to-date digital sales to 2,008,000. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” the first single from her sophomore album “21″ that topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks beginning in May, is the top-selling download of 2011 with digital sales of 5.3 million.
Adele boasts one other million-selling download. Introductory single “Chasing Pavements,” from her 2008 debut album “19,” has sold 1.2 million, including 7,000 this week (up 10%).
Adele Leads American Music Awards Nominations
“Someone” holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs with 136 million audience impressions (up 10%), according to Nielsen BDS.
The Hot 100′s top three remains static, as former four-week No. 1 “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera again places at No. 2 and Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3.
“Jagger” reaches a new peak in audience (143 million, up 3%) in its fourth week atop Radio Songs, while staying at No. 2 on Digital Songs (186,000, down 6%).
“Kicks” likewise registers a new audience highpoint (107 million, up 6%), remaining at No. 3 on Radio Songs, while holding at No. 4 on Digital Songs (176,000, down less than 1%). The song has now spent seven weeks at No. 3 on the Hot 100, matching H-Town’s “Knockin’ Da Boots” (1993) for the most frames tallied at No. 3 for a song that rose as high as the chart’s bronze medal rank. Only Real McCoy’s “Another Night” (11 weeks, 1994-95) and LL Cool J’s “Hey Lover” (eight, 1995-96) spent more time peaking at No. 3.
LMFAO struts 6-4 on the Hot 100 with “Sexy and I Know It.” The song jumps 5-3 on Digital Songs (182,000, up 13%) and 27-19 on Radio Songs (51 million, up 28%). The duo’s former six-week No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, meanwhile, descends 5-6. The tracks sandwich Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, which retreats 4-5 on the Hot 100 but advances 7-4 on Radio Songs (96 million, up 10%). “Hearts” rises 7-6 on Digital Songs, although with a 5% decline to 133,000.
After she roared to her 20th Hot 100 top 10 last week, reaching the milestone faster than any other solo artist in the chart’s history, Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, bumps 9-7. The first single from “Talk That Talk,” due Nov. 21, charges 39-23 on Radio Songs, up 36% to 44 million. The cut ascends 6-5 on Digital Songs (144,000, down 2%).
Scotty McCreery Makes History at No. 1 on Billboard 200
“Found” passes another DJ/pop superstar collaboration, David Guetta’s “Without You,” featuring Usher, which bullets at No. 8 on the Hot 100 for a second week. The song zooms toward the top 10 on Radio Songs (62 million, up 15%) and lifts 8-7 on Digital Songs (121,000, down 3%).
Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi (10-9), and Lady Gaga’s “You and I” (12-10) rounds out the Hot 100′s top 10.
T-Pain’s “5 O’Clock,” featuring Wiz Khalifa and Lily Allen, scores the Hot 100′s Digital Gainer tag, blasting 62-30 in its second chart week. The song flies 47-15 on Digital Songs with 61,000 downloads sold, up 103%. Budding airplay sends it 74-60 on Radio Songs (21 million, up 41%). The track, whose video premiered Sept. 30 and which previews T-Pain’s forthcoming fourth studio album, “RevolveR,” marks Allen’s first top 40 Hot 100 hit. The English singer/songwriter previously rose as high as No. 49 with her introductory effort “Smile” in 2007.
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Oct. 13) on Billboard.com.

Adele Reclaims Hot 100 Throne, B.o.B Blasts Into Top 10
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | October 05, 2011 4:30 EDT
CHART HIGHTLIGHTS:
– B.o.B.’s “Strange Clouds” debuts at No. 7.
– Adele wipes away bad tour news with a No. 1 for “Someone Like You.”
– LMFAO hold Nos. 5 AND 6 spots.
– Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 for a sixth week.
–Welcome back Nickelback to Top 50.

A busy week on the Billboard Hot 100 finds Adele reclaiming the apex and rapper B.o.B blasting into the top 10.
Additionally, as previously reported, Rihanna roars to a 20th Hot 100 top 10 faster than any other solo artist, as “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, darts 16-9 in its second chart week.
Adele offsets the cancellation of her upcoming U.S. tour with a return to the summit, as “Someone Like You” leaps 2-1. The song had spent one previous frame atop the Hot 100 (Sept. 17) following her performance of the ballad at the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 28.
“Someone” lifts 2-1 on Digital Songs with download sales of 222,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs with 123 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The song bullets at No. 2 on the Adult Pop Songs radio chart and earns Greatest Gainer honors on Pop Songs (6-3) and Adult Contemporary (13-11).
Having banked three Hot 100 top 10s last year from his debut Billboard 200 No. 1 album, “B.o.B Presents: the Adventures of Bobby Ray,” rapper B.o.B previews his forthcoming second set, as its title cut, “Strange Clouds,” bounds onto the Hot 100 at No. 7. The track, co-written and -produced by Dr. Luke and featuring Lil Wayne, begins at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 197,000 downloads.

B.o.B’s debut collection yielded the Hot 100 No. 1 “Nothin’ on You,” featuring Bruno Mars (read on for Mars’ latest chart action); the No. 2 “Airplanes,” featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams; and, the No. 10 “Magic,” featuring Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo.
Elsewhere in this week’s Hot 100 top 10, Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera, drops to No. 2 after four non-consecutive weeks on top. The track reaches a new peak in audience (138 million, up 5%) in its third week atop Radio Songs, while dipping 1-2 on Digital Songs (198,000, down 15%).
Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a sixth week. It pushes 6-3 on Radio Songs (101 million, up 5%) and slips 3-4 on Digital Songs (177,000, down less than 1%).
It Started With a Free Download: The Foster the People Story
Gym Class Heroes‘ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, lifts 5-4 on the Hot 100, advancing 10-7 on Radio Songs (88 million, up 14%) and retreating 5-7 on Digital Songs 140,000 (up less than 1%).
LMFAO locks down the Nos. 5 and 6 spots on the Hot 100. The duo’s former six-week No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, descends 4-5, as follow-up “Sexy and I Know It” rises 10-6. The latter song jumps 6-5 on Digital Songs (161,000, up 16%) and 45-27 on Radio Songs (40 million, up 45%).
In between B.o.B at No. 7 and Rihanna at No. 9, David Guetta‘s “Without You,” featuring Usher, enters the Hot 100′s top 10 (11-8). Guetta’s third top 10 and Usher’s 17th, climbs 21-16 on Radio Songs (54 million, up 18%) and holds at No. 8 on Digital Songs (125,000, up 7%).
Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi, rounds out the Hot 100′s top 10, dropping 9-10.
Rihanna Becomes Fastest Solo Artist To 20 Hot 100 Top 10s
In addition to B.o.B’s launch, 10 other titles arrive on the Hot 100, including Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” at No. 28. The track, which starts with 80,000 downloads, previews the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ soundtrack, due Nov. 8.
Other Hot 100 debuts include Nickelback‘s “When We Stand Together” (No. 48), the lead single from the band’s seventh album, “Here and Now” (due Nov. 21); the “Glee” cast’s cover of the “West Side Story” ballad “Somewhere” (No. 75); and, “Calling All the Monsters” (No. 100) by China Anne McClain, the 13-year-old star of the Disney Channel series “A.N.T. Farm.”
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Oct. 6) on Billboard.com.

The title track from the rapper’s sophomore album, which will be released in early 2011, previews what B.o.B describes as an “artistically influenced” follow-up to 2010′s “The Adventures of Bobby Ray.”
Rihanna roars to a 20th Billboard Hot 100 top 10 faster than any other solo artist, as “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, darts 16-9.

Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Jagger’ Atop Hot 100 For Third Week
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 21, 2011 4:59 EDT
http://www.billboard.com/photos/stylus/1140209-the-voice-christina-aguilera-maroon-5-617-409.jpg
As previously reported, the Billboard Hot 100′s splashiest headline this week comes courtesy of Tony Bennett, who becomes the oldest living artist ever to appear on the tally. His duet with Amy Winehouse, “Body and Soul,” enters the chart at No. 87, lifting the 85-year-old past then-84-year-old George Burns (in 1980) for the esteemed honor.
Still, other news infuses this week’s chart.
Maroon 5′s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera, spends a third week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, roaring to the No. 1 spot on Radio Songs and holding atop Digital Songs.
“Jagger” blasts 5-1 on Radio Songs with a 14% gain to 123 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The song marks Maroon 5′s first No. 1 on the chart, passing the twin No. 5 peaks of “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved” in 2004. Aguilera celebrates her third time singing on the country’s most-heard song: her debut pop smash “Genie in a Bottle” reigned for three weeks in 1999 and “Lady Marmalade,” with Lil’ Kim, Mya and P!nk, led for six frames in 2001.
Lady Antebellum ‘Own’ the Billboard 200 With Second No. 1 Album
The 5-1 vault of “Jagger” on Radio Songs is the greatest since Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” bounded 6-1 on the Nov. 28, 2009, chart.
“Jagger” leads Digital Songs for a fourth frame with 221,000 downloads sold (up 1%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Former Hot 100 No. 1 “Someone Like You” by Adele holds at No. 2 for a second week with Airplay Gainer honors. The ballad jumps into the Radio Songs top 10 (13-9), surging by 37% to 84 million. The track is the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs (16-13) and Adult Contemporary (14-13), while bulleting at No. 4 on Triple A, No. 5 on Adult Pop Songs and No. 27 on Rock Songs.
Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a fourth week. The song pushes 10-8 on Radio Songs (90 million, up 11%) and remains at No. 3 on Digital Songs (186,000, down 4%).
LMFAO’s former six-week No. 1 – and Billboard’s official song of the summer – “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock (4-4) and Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts,” featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine (6-5), round out the Hot 100′s top five. The latter song advances 5-4 on Digital Songs (144,000, down 1%) and 16-14 on Radio Songs (63 million, up 9%).
Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars, slips 5-6 on the Hot 100 and Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…,” featuring Sabi, lifts 11-7 after reaching a previous high point of No. 8 two weeks ago. “Feel” flies to its new peak thanks to gains in digital sales (130,000, up 2%) and airplay (60 million, up 10%).
Closing out the Hot 100′s top 10 are Rihanna’s “Cheers (Drink to That)” (10-8); Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” (7-9); and, Lady Gaga’s “You and I” (8-10).
Outside the Hot 100′s top tier, David Guetta’s “Without You,” featuring Usher, claims Digital Gainer accolades, charging 23-15. It roars 18-10 on Digital Songs, increasing by 71% to 104,000.
In addition to Bennett’s bow with Winehouse, five other songs enter the Hot 100, led by Coldplay’s “Paradise” at No. 16. The follow-up to the No. 14-peaking “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” opens as the band’s third-highest debut, following “Speed of Sound” (No. 8, 2005) and “Viva La Vida” (No. 15, 2008).
“Paradise,” the second single from the band’s fifth studio album, “Mylo Xyloto,” due Oct. 24, begins on Digital Songs at No. 6 (139,000). Radio is already supporting the song, as it launches on the Triple A adult alternative chart at No. 11 and Alternative Songs at No. 24. “Paradise” goes to pop and adult pop radio Oct. 3.
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 22) on Billboard.com.

*THIS CHART IS ONLY A PORTION (TOP 30) OF A TOP 50 CHART.
HENCE songs are not deemed to have fallen off the charts UNTIL they are
OUTSIDE/BELOW the top 50 and NOT the top 30 broadcasted on air. This IS
reflected in the year end ‘jamz’ and explains partially why songs peaking
significantly lower than others may still finish ahead of them on the
year-end charts.

Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Know It All’ Debuts on Hot 100, Rihanna’s ‘Cheers’ Rises
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 14, 2011 3:45 EDT

As Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera, rebounds to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, Kelly Clarkson‘s “Mr. Know It All” launches on the chart as the list’s highest debut at No. 18. Rihanna, meanwhile, banks another Hot 100 top 10, “Cheers (Drink to That),” from her album “Loud.”
Clarkson previews her fifth studio album, “Stronger,” due Oct. 25, by notching the second-highest debut among her 17 Hot 100 chart entries. She began at a higher rank only with “Never Again,” which arrived (and peaked) at No. 8 the week of May 12, 2007.
Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Mr. Know It All’ Single: What Do You Think?
“Know” enters Digital Songs at No. 9 with 107,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track is likewise the top new entry on Radio Songs, where it starts at No. 65 with 17 million in all-format audience (up 79%), according to Nielsen BDS. The song rises 30-20 as the Greatest Gainer on the Adult Pop Songs radio airplay chart and launches at No. 29 on Pop Songs.
Clarkson premiered “Know” Aug. 31 via webcast on her official website ahead of its Sept. 5 release to retail.
As the original “American Idol” queen charges onto the Hot 100, the chart’s top song is again by two of the coaches – Adam Levine and Aguilera – of rival music reality competition program “The Voice.”
After dropping to No. 2 last week, “Jagger” returns for a second frame atop the Hot 100, similarly rebounding (3-1) for a second week at No. 1 on Digital Songs (220,000, up 6%). The song claims Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 courtesy of its 8-5 push on Radio Songs (104 million, up 20%).
Adam Levine Calls ‘Moves Like Jagger’ a ‘Risk’ for Maroon 5: Video Interview
Last week’s Hot 100 No. 1, Adele‘s “Someone Like You,” retreats 1-2 after soaring to the summit from No. 19 a week ago, a coronation fueled by reaction to her performance of the song on the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 28. The piano-and-vocal-only ballad – the first such No. 1 in the Hot 100′s 53-year history – slides 1-2 on Digital Songs (213,000, down 22%). “Someone” climbs 19-13, however, on Radio Songs (61 million, up 33%). The song is the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs (19-16) and Adult Contemporary (16-14), while pushing 5-4 on Triple A, 10-6 on Adult Pop Songs and 35-28 on Rock Songs.
Adele Makes Billboard Hot 100 History With ‘Someone Like You’
Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a third week. The track drops 2-3 on Digital Songs (193,000, down 11%), while bulleting at No. 10 on Radio Songs (79 million, up 13%).
LMFAO‘s former No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock (4-4) and Bad Meets Evil‘s “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars (7-5), close out the Hot 100′s top five.
As Maroon 5 revisits the Hot 100′s apex, the group’s lead singer Levine returns to the top 10 (12-6, after rising to No. 10 two weeks ago) as a guest on Gym Class Heroes‘ “Stereo Hearts.” The song advances 9-5 on Digital Songs (145,000, up 4%) and 18-16 on Radio Songs (56 million, up 15%).
Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Bass” descends 5-7 on the Hot 100 and Lady Gaga‘s “You and I” falls 6-8. The latter title had, like Adele’s “Someone,” benefited last week from a buzzworthy performance on the VMAs. “You and I” drops 4-6 on Digital Songs (141,000, down 19%), while edging 23-21 on Radio Songs (48 million, up 18%).
Lady Gaga, Bono Playing Hollywood Bowl to Honor Bill Clinton Foundation
Lil Wayne‘s former No. 5-peaking “How to Love” rebounds 14-9 with Digital Gainer accolades, surging 20-10 on Digital Songs (90,000, up 33%). Parent album “Tha Carter IV” spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Rihanna rounds out the Hot 100′s top tier by scoring a fourth top 10 from her fifth studio album “Loud,” as “Cheers (Drink to That)” ascends 11-10. The song reaches the top bracket by gaining 10% in airplay to 58 million, despite its 11% digital sales decline to 126,000. Rihanna’s 19th Hot 100 top 10 follows three leaders from “Loud”: “Only Girl (In the World)”; “What’s My Name?,” featuring Drake; and, “S&M.” Two other cuts from the set have also graced the chart: “California King Bed” (No. 37 peak) and “Man Down” (No. 59).
Below Clarkson’s arrival, six other new titles debut on the Hot 100, including one from a fellow “American Idol” champion, plus yet another Fox TV star.
Lady Antebellum charts a fourth Hot 100 title from its third studio album, “Own the Night” – expected to charge onto next week’s Billboard 200 – as “Wanted You More” starts at No. 34 (74,000 downloads). Predecessor preview track “Dancin’ Away With My Heart” debuted last week at No. 50 (57,000). The set’s first proper radio single, “Just a Kiss,” peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 (this week ranking at No. 30), while current country focus track “We Owned the Night” climbs 96-80.
Lady Antebellum Talk Album’s Huge Expectations, ‘SNL’ and Tour
Hugh Laurie, aka, Dr. Gregory House of Fox’s “House, M.D.,” earns his first Hot 100 hit, as “Police Dog Blues” enters at No. 58 (46,000 downloads). Parent album “Let Them Talk” bows on the Billboard 200 at No. 16 and Blues Albums at No. 1 with 20,000 copies sold.
In more Fox news, Scotty McCreery debuts on the Hot 100 at No. 84 with his second single, “The Trouble With Girls”. The track by the reigning “Idol” king enters Digital Songs at No. 59 (27,000, up 12%) and rises 54-47 in its second week on Country Songs. McCreery’s “Idol” victory song “I Love You This Big” reached No. 11 on the Hot 100 (and No. 15 on Country Songs).
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 15) on Billboard.com.

Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ Soars To No. 1 On Hot 100
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 07, 2011 3:30 EDT
Following an acclaimed performance of the song on the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 28, Adele‘s stark ballad “Someone Like You” bounds to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, vaulting 19-1 with dual Digital and Airplay Gainer honors.
“Like” leaps 11-1 on Digital Songs with 275,000 downloads sold (up 191%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. On Radio Songs, the track blasts 42-19 with 46 million all-format audience impressions (up 59%), according to Nielsen BDS.
The honors continue to pour in for Adele, as “Like” is her second Hot 100 No. 1, after “Rolling in the Deep” spent seven weeks at the summit beginning in May.

“Deep,” which won Adele three trophies at the VMAs, and “Like” appear on the singer/songwriter’s sophomore album “21,” which, with 3.3 million copies sold in the U.S. since its February release, ranks as 2011′s top-selling set.
Similar to “Deep,” “Like” is receiving multi-format radio support, lifting into the top 10 on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart (12-10), while advancing 6-5 on Triple A; 18-16 on Adult Contemporary; and, 24-19 on Pop Songs.
“Like” dethrones Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera (1-2), after the latter track ruled the Hot 100 for a week. While “Jagger” slips 1-3 on Digital Songs (207,000, down 5%), it jumps into the top 10 (11-8) on Radio Songs (86 million, up 22%).
Foster the People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100. The former Alternative Songs topper bullets at No. 2 on Digital Songs (218,000, up 12%) and reaches the top 10 on Radio Songs (70 million, up 16%). It also enters the Pop Songs top 10 (11-10).

LMFAO‘s former six-week No. 1 “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, dips 2-4 on the Hot 100, while Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Bass” rebounds 6-5. “Anthem” has led Billboard’s Songs of the Summer running tally the past four weeks; check Billboard.com tomorrow for the coronation of this year’s top summer title and the 10-position seasonal survey’s final order.
Fellow VMA standout performer Lady Gaga likewise benefits from a buzzworthy appearance on the telecast. After she opened the festivities with “You and I,” the song charges 16-6 on the Hot 100 – becoming her 11th top 10, her entire output of singles promoted to radio. The cut climbs 8-4 on Digital Songs (175,000, up 61%) and 37-23 on Radio Songs (41 million, up 32%).
Does Gaga View Her Makeupless Harper’s Bazaar Cover as ‘Artificial?’
Bad Meets Evil‘s “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars, drops 4-7 on the Hot 100, above Cobra Starship‘s “You Make Me Feel …,” featuring Sabi, which zooms 18-8. After the group performed the latter title on the VMA pre-show, it flies 13-5 on Digital Songs (159,000, up 75%) and 24-20 on Radio Songs (45 million, up 15%). “Feel” is the act’s second top 10; “Good Girls Go Bad,” featuring Leighton Meester, reached No. 7 in 2009.
Rounding out the Hot 100′s top 10 are two former No. 1s: Pitbull‘s “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer (9-9) and Katy Perry‘s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” (5-10). Although her streak may be in danger of ending, Perry extends her record run to 69 consecutive weeks in the top 10. The stretch encompasses the five No. 1 singles from her album “Teenage Dream,” dating to the No. 2 of lead single “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, the week of May 29, 2010.
A hefty 16 titles debut on the Hot 100 – half from Lil Wayne‘s album “Tha Carter IV,”, which, as previously reported, rockets onto the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with 964,000 copies sold. “Mirror,” featuring Bruno Mars, leads the way at No. 16, entering Digital Songs at No. 6 with 149,000 downloads sold.
Lil Wayne’s ‘Carter IV’ Debuts at No. 1 With 964,000 Copies
As three titles previously on the Hot 100 join his eight newcomers, Weezy places 11 songs total on this week’s chart, tying David Cook and Taylor Swift for the most simultaneously-charting songs by a soloist in the list’s 53-year history. Only the Beatles have held more concurrent positions, having placed 14 songs on the April 11, 1964, Hot 100 (as well as 12 each the frames before and after).
The VMAs also reveal their influence in the form of Hot 100 debuts, including Beyonce, whose “Love on Top” begins at No. 20 (and No. 10 on Digital Songs with sales of 113,000, marking the first Digital Songs top 10 from her album “4″). Beyonce performed the song on the VMAs (and then unsnapped her jacket and rubbed her belly, a move that served to announce her pregnancy).
Jay-Z and Beyonce Are ‘Ecstatic’ About Pregnancy, Says The-Dream
The No. 20 Hot 100 launch of “Love” is Beyonce’s second-highest among her 29 solo career entries; only “Ring the Alarm” began at a higher rung (No. 12, 2006).
Young the Giant additionally parlays a VMA performance into a Hot 100 arrival, as “My Body” starts at No. 65 (42,000 downloads, up 220%). The track reached No. 5 on Alternative Songs in April.
All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Songs of the Summer will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 8) on Billboard.com.

Adele Makes Billboard Hot 100 History With ‘Someone Like You’
by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | September 09, 2011 4:30 EDT
CHART HIGHLIGHTS:
– “Someone Like You” jumped from 19-1 on the Hot 100 chart.
– “Someone” is Adele’s second No. 1 on the chart, after “Rolling in the Deep.”
– “Rolling” is the top-selling single of the year in the U.S., with 5 million.
– And “21″ is the year’s biggest album, with 3.3 million.
– Adele’s label, Columbia, expects “21″ will shift a total of 4.5 million by end of the year.
With Adele‘s leap from No. 19 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with “Someone Like You,” the singer achieves the biggest jump to No. 1 in the chart’s 53-year history that wasn’t spurred by the release of a single.
Every other larger vault to No. 1 in Hot 100 history came as a result of a single arriving to the market. That includes the chart’s greatest jump, Kelly Clarkson’s 97-1 leap in 2009 with “My Life Would Suck Without You” or what was the tally’s biggest climb until 2002: the Beatles’ 27-1 rise with “Can’t Buy Me Love” in 1964.
Adele Brings a Ballad Back to the Hot 100 Summit
“Someone,” on the other hand, zoomed to No. 1 thanks to buzz generated by Adele’s MTV Video Music Awards performance on Aug. 28. The song, her second No. 1, was released to digital retailers on Feb. 22 as a track on her XL/Columbia “21″ album, which arrived the same day.
“Someone” sold 275,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, in the week ending Sept. 4 (up 191%). Its huge sales increase came courtesy of the song’s water cooler-worthy performance on the most-watched VMAs in history. On the show, Adele sang the heartbreaking ballad on a darkened stage, accompanied by a sparse piano.
MTV VMA Ratings: Biggest Audience Ever
“Adele’s all about the music,” Columbia senior VP of sales Steve Kennedy says. “She and her manager, Jonathan Dickins, wanted to get across in the VMA performance that the music was more important than anything else.”
“With all the bombastic theatrics going on that night,” Kennedy continues, “we felt that her very simple set would completely stand out [against] everything else.”
MTV executive VP of music and talent Amy Doyle echoes Kennedy’s thoughts. “Adele is one of those rare artists that can command a stage with just the power of her voice and subtle nuances of her vocals. ‘Someone Like You’ is timeless and we’re proud that we could provide her with the world’s largest stage to introduce the song to a global audience.”
The staging of Adele’s VMA performance — and its impact – recalls her BRIT Awards turn on Feb. 15. On the U.K.’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards, she sang “Someone” in a similar setting, and it immediately caused a huge surge on the official U.K. charts. The next week, “Someone” vaulted 47-1 on the singles tally while “Rolling in the Deep,” the album’s first single, moved 5-4 the same week.
Adele Ties Beatles Record on U.K. Charts
Meanwhile, on the U.K. albums chart that week, “21″ held at No. 1 for a fourth frame and its predecessor, “19,” climbed 6-4. With those stats, she became the first living act since the Beatles in January 1964 to have two titles simultaneously in the top five on both the U.K. singles and albums charts.
The No. 1 Hot 100 triumph of “Someone” follows a seven-week run at the top by the lead single from “21,” the multiformat smash “Rolling in the Deep.” Earlier this year, when it debuted on the Latin Songs chart, it became the most widely crossed-over song of the past 25 years. The Latin tally was the record 12th Nielsen BDS-based Billboard airplay chart on which “Rolling” appeared.
“Rolling in the Deep’ broke down a lot of doors with regards to multiformat play,” Kennedy says. “‘Someone Like You’ is about to crash through them all again.”
“Rolling” is currently the top-selling song of the year in the United States, with 5 million sold. Adele’s “21″ is also the year’s biggest album, with 3.3 million.
Columbia expects that “21″ will continue to sell at a fast clip, projecting that the album could shift a total of 4.5 million by the end of the year and between 5 million and 6 million by March 2012. The latter sum would include whatever sales bump the singer will likely receive from the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards — where Adele seems a lock to take home at least a few trophies.

With its lyrics imploring revelers to “get up, get down, put your hands up to the sound!,” LMFAO‘s “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, is, fittingly, Billboard’s 2011 song of the summer.
The hi-energy dance track tops this year’s Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart, which ranks the most popular songs based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 from Memorial Day through Labor Day (specifically, the charts dated June 11 through Sept. 17, 2011).

“We created a tool for people to use to get hyped up at their party, on their boat, at the club, at the gym, etc. People love it… it feels amazing!” the group’s Redfoo told Billboard exclusively upon hearing the news. “Because of how hard we worked on mixing the record and the dedication that went into the video, it was clear from the beginning that our goal was to take the party rock sound to number one.”

“Anthem” took the lead for good on the Songs of the Summer running tally the previous four weeks after Adele‘s “Rolling in the Deep” had topped the survey the first seven weeks of the season.

“Anthem” spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 beginning July 16. Following its Hot 100 reign, it held the No. 2 position for three weeks, helping to secure its spot atop the final Songs of the Summer countdown.

The song was also the only title to rank inside the Hot 100′s top 10 in each of the 15 weeks measured for the Songs of the Summer chart.
LMFAO is the first duo to wear the seasonal crown since another ubiquitous dance anthem, Los Del Rio’s “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” became Billboard’s song of the summer for 1996 (after topping the Hot 100 for 14 weeks that year).
“Anthem” earns coveted song of the summer status over 2011 runner-up “Give Me Everything” by Pitbull, featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer. The latter song capped the July 9 Hot 100 and spent 14 weeks in the top 10 during the Songs of the Summer tracking period.
Adele’s “Deep” claims the No. 3 position on the Songs of the Summer chart, having spent the last four of its seven weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 during the seasonal ranking’s chart span. The multi-format smash ranked in the Hot 100′s top 10 for 11 weeks of the Songs of the Summer recap span.

Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Bass” places at No. 4 on the Songs of the Summer survey. The pop/rap jam began the season at No. 11 on the Hot 100 and spent the rest of the summer (14 weeks) lodged in the top 10, peaking for two weeks at No. 3.
Katy Perry‘s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” rounds out the 2011 Songs of the Summer top five at No. 5. Perry won last year’s summer songs contest courtesy of “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, which took the 2010 title on the strength of a six-week Hot 100 rule.
While she doesn’t prevail this year, this summer brought Perry a string of achievements and publicity, most notably her becoming the first female artist in the Hot 100‘s 53-year history to bank five No. 1s from one album. (“Friday” was the fifth Hot 100 leader (two weeks at No. 1; 12 in the top 10) from “Teenage Dream,” following “California,” the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West).

As “E.T.” ranks at No. 9 on the Songs of the Summer chart, Perry is the only artist to boast two titles on the tally. While Eminem locked down two spots on last year’s chart (“Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna, No. 2; “Not Afraid,” No. 10), Perry is the first woman to double up since Rihanna in summer 2008 (“Take a Bow,” No. 3; “Disturbia,” No. 9).

It’s Official: Lil Wayne’s ‘Carter IV’ Debuts at No. 1 With 964,000 Copies
by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | September 06, 2011 6:35 EDT
It’s official: Lil Wayne‘s “Tha Carter IV” has sold 964,000 in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, easily enabling its No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart. It is his third No. 1 album following “Tha Carter III” and “I Am Not a Human Being.”
“Carter IV” earns the biggest sales week for a hip-hop album (or any set by a male artist) since his own “Carter III” bowed with 1.01 million on the June 28, 2008 chart. “Carter IV” also marks 2011′s second-biggest frame, behind Lady Gaga‘s 1.11 million debut with “Born This Way.”
Lil Wayne Breaks iTunes’ Single-Week Album Sales Record
Of course, Gaga’s first week was bolstered by two days’ worth of 99-cent sale pricing from AmazonMP3′s store. “Carter IV” managed to sell nearly a million without such tactics. It’s estimated that AmazonMP3 sold upwards of 440,000 downloads of its 99-cent “Born This Way” album.
Lil Wayne’s ‘Tha Carter IV’: Track-By-Track Review
Speaking of downloads, “Carter IV” shifted 362,000 digital copies in its first week. That marks the second-largest digital sales week of all time for an album; again, behind “Born This Way,” with 662,000 downloads.
However, while SoundScan does not disclose retailer-specific figures, sources say “Carter” easily broke the U.S. iTunes Store’s single-week album sales record, with around 345,000 sold via iTunes.

“Tha Carter IV” is off to a fast start courtesy of both a hot single and an eve-of-release performance by Wayne on the highly rated MTV Video Music Awards telecast (Aug. 28). His “How to Love” single is his first top 10 hit as a lead artist on the Pop Songs chart since 2008, when “Lollipop” (“Tha Carter III’s” first single) went to No. 5. “Love” is in fact only his second top 10 on the Pop Songs tally, after “Lollipop.”
Also, figure that the “Carter” name brand carries weight with fans, much in the same way the word “blueprint” makes Jay-Z aficionados take notice. He’s had three “Blueprint” albums to date: all debuted at No. 1 with over 400,000 sold in their respective first weeks.
A full recap of the week’s top 10 selling albums and digital songs will follow on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Adam Levine Calls ‘Moves Like Jagger’ a ‘Risk’ for Maroon 5: Video Interview
by Jeff Benjamin, N.Y. | September 08, 2011 12:00 EDT
Adam Levine may be Maroon 5′s outspoken frontman, but as the band’s keyboardist Jesse Carmichael reveals to Billboard.com, Levine isn’t always on-point about their song selections.
“In the past we had this barometer, which was that if Adam hated a song, we knew it was going to be successful,” Carmichael tells Billboard.com in a video interview (watch below).
Hence their concern over “Moves Like Jagger,” with Levine recalling, “I loved ‘Jagger.’ I was really worried it wasn’t going to be big. I liked it a lot.” But the band had nothing to worry about, as their Christina Aguilera collab hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week.
Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Jagger’ Moves to No. 1 on Hot 100
“It was one of those songs that was definitely a risk; it’s a bold statement,” Levine tells Billboard.com. “We’ve never really released a song like that. But it’s exciting to do something different, do something new. I’m just happy everyone likes it.”
Something else that makes Levine happy? His show, “The Voice,” and its acceptance of all types of relationships.
“‘The Voice’ was very open in the beginning about peoples’ relationships regardless of what they were,” he says. “I think that’s a great thing. Rather than slamming ‘[American] Idol,’ which I don’t think that I’m doing, I’m more kind of applauding ‘The Voice’ for doing that and being courageous enough. This really isn’t a debate, because they just don’t do that on ‘American Idol,’ which is totally their choice. However, they promote certain relationships and they don’t promote others which I think is kind of shitty.”
In addition to “The Voice,” which makes it return this winter with Levine on the coaching panel, Maroon 5 has plans to hit the studio at the end of the year. Carmichael’s personal wish for the sessions include a collaboration with another big-voiced diva: Adele, who knocked the band off their Hot 100 summit this week.
Maroon 5 Hopes Next Album Will Quickly Follow ‘Jagger’ Single
Maroon 5 also recently created their own Snapple flavor, “Tea Will Be Loved,” that includes a fusion of different five fruit flavors chosen by Maroon’s five members. The flavor is a collaboration effort of Snapple and Maroon 5 to benefit Feeding America which will help to provide 1,750,000 meals to those in need. The brand and band will also donate $250,000 to Feeding America, which supplies food to more than 37 million Americans each year.
