Reggaefusion on the rise: Jamaican producer Mafia working official Reggae Fusion album

Moving away from the regular dancehall rhythms, producer Mafia is putting the finishing touches on a funky house album with dancehall artistes that will be released in Europe.

Mafia, whose real name is Germaine Clarke, explained that funky house shares similarities with techno music, but there are some differences. And, it is completely different from dancehall.

“Techno has everything playing at one time and there is not much vocals. Funky house has vocals but not much. It starts with drum and bass and when it reaches 20 seconds, it start build up to the full rhythm,” said Mafia who records many of Busy Signal’s songs.

The album, which is called Protected By Bass, features several top artistes like Busy Signal who did a song calledWinners Make Love with an upcoming singer Onaje, which is already getting some promotion locally. It also has D’Angel withSexiness, Wayne Marshall’s Can’t Stop We and former TV host Amelia ‘Milk’ Sewell who recorded her first song called Fresh Milk. In addition, each track has a different rhythm.

While there are only Jamaican artistes on the album so far, Mafia said he wanted to get artistes from other nationalities on it as well. However, that is yet to materialise.

Mafia says he also feels that his idea will sell in the European market to which it is geared.

“It different and it is commercial. It don’t have the raw chaw patois so people can understand it,” Mafia told THE STAR.

“Wid di whole heap a madness weh a gwaan with dancehall, mi decide fi try something new. Mi haffi try fix it. It (the album) is really an experiment and mi consult couple people inna Europe before mi do it and dem seh it would be good for the artistes as well because they would get more exposure in Europe.”

In addition, he said the response has been good from one of the officials at the Ministry of Sounds in the United Kingdom through which he is negotiating a deal to release the album. If the negotiation process is completed soon, Mafia will release the album by the end of summer.

“Somebody from there did hear the Onaje and Busy and seh dem love it. So mi have mi fingers crossed,” Mafia told THE STAR

This will begin the rebuilding period for Campion College Under-19 (Varsity) Team. The next two years should be rough but in a matter of time players such as Javier Gordon, Jonathan Mitchell & Leekem Brown, among others, should have the team back on track.

Here are the ladies who are on the Wray & Nephew Calendar for 2008. I came across the pictures of the photo shoot on Watever dot com and thought I should link up the guy readers to them. Yeah, ladies, I am idle, I know. Got not a rass to do thats real fun, I can’t even go to the beach, because the water is cold! Only tourists can handle the water like that, yo! Anyway, I think the pick of the calendar girls is the one on the right in the picture above. Phew, its getting hot in here!

Because she is so nice, I am going to play her twice! She is in the picture below!

Go check the pictures from the photo shoot out and see if you agree with me. “Blondie” looks nice too, but I can’t take the “big hair” phenomenon. Maybe the hair is detachible though, there’s a thought! The other girl is nice too, but for me, the girl on the right wins the prize, everytime!

Nice Teeth!

Found this photo while surfing through PartySurfers.ky this morning and was struck by the beautiful smiles on these ladies. What lovely teeth they have. I also like their dresses… and the “chain” on the lady on the right!
Yes, rasta, she knows how to accessorise perfectly for that outfit. By the way, the photo is from the group taken at the Hieneken Green Synergy finals in Jamaica. I guess those are Jamaicans rather than Caymanians. Most likely, huh? Here is a picture of another interesting looking Jamaican lady, but this time I cannot comment on her teeth. She won the Jamaica Star’s “Femme Fashion” competition last week.

Campion College Basketball: Campionites end season on high, trouncing Tarrant

Date: 31/01/08 [56-10] {Record: 3-5} Venue: Radley Reid Arena (Campion College)
[Home: 3-1][Away: 0-4]

Campion College finished their season in the same manner in which they started it – with a win – as action continued in the Southern Zone of the ISSA/KFC/Pepsi Basketball Competition. Campion soundly beat the lowly Tarrant High to complete and cap off a better than average (and expected) season. Though playing slopely, possibly due to their season having being over AND/OR the fact that they knew Tarrant was winless, the Campionites still managed to demolish their opponents 56-10.

Impressive Home Record

Though a sloppy match, the Campionites ended their season with an impressive home record of 3 wins and just one loss. The fans obviously playing a factor with this year being the only year in recent times that Campion fans came out in their numbers and actually outnumbered opponents. All-in-all, it was a great sending off for the Campionites with all but one of their members playing their last year of basketball with the school.

Campion College Basketball: Campionites season comes to an end, with loss to St. Catherine

Date: 24/01/08 [44-58] {Record: 2-5} Venue: Radley Reid Arena (Campion College)
[Home: 2-1][Away: 0-4]

St. Catherine High officially put an end to Campion College’s bid for a playoff/quarterfinal spot as action continued in the Southern Zone of the ISSA/KFC/Pepsi Basketball Competition. The Campionites, who came into this match needing to win, went down in a match that was for the most part closely contested. At halftime the score was 17-26 and the Campionites looked a bt shaky. However they made great efforts in their comeback and drew close to St. Catherine team before finally allowing the match and hence their season, to slip away. The match eventually ended 58 – 44.

SLIPPED AWAY
As the match came down to the final five minutes Campion had drawn withint two points of their opponents. However, offensive blunders turned into easy fast break points which allowed St. Catherine to balloon back the lead to double digits. As the match came to a close, they knew that their spirited season was over.

FIRST HOME LOSS
This match was the first home loss for the Campionites who had previously been undefeated (2 – 0). (Though the loss to Calabar came at their home, it was scheduled and is still regarded as an away encounter).

ONE MATCH TO GO
They still have one match to go against Tarrant and the team is hoping to end their season on a high, not only due to pride but also the fact that most of these players are also seniors meaning this is their last year of high school basketball.

(BEIJING, August 20) — Jamaican Usain Bolt dashed through the finish line of the Men’s 200m to complete a rare sprint double by winning the Men’s 200m, days after having won the Men’s 100m at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Bolt set a new world record of 19.30 seconds in the Men’s 200m final to take the gold medal in this event on August 20. His elegant and relaxed performance has captivated the world of Athletics.

Shawn Crawford of the United States took the silver medal with a time of 19.96 seconds, striding in just ahead of bronze medalist Walter Dix at 19.98s.

Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles, who had apparently taken the silver with his nation’s best ever time of 19.82 seconds, was disqualified under IAAF Rule 163.3 — lane infringement. The Jury of Appeal evaluated all available evidence and decided to accept the appeal presented by the United States team.

Bolt has become the first man to win the 100m and 200m in the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984.

Other double sprint champions include American Jesse Owens, who won the 100m and 200m at Berlin at the 1936 Olympics, and Valery Borzov of the then Soviet Union, who won both 100m and 200m at Munich in the 1972 Olympics.

The youthful and exuberant champion could barely contain his joy, “I never expected this. I knew the track was a fast track but I didn’t think this was possible.”

Bolt reveled in his spirited celebrations, laughing and dancing and posing for the world while draped in his national colors.

“I’m shocked, I am still shocked. I have been aspiring to the world record for so long.”

This Jamaican sprint giant entered into the final of the Men’s 200m as favorite after leaving the world in awe with his phenomenal 9.69s world record triumph in the Men’s 100m on August 16.

Predominantly renowned for his 200m talent, Bolt made headlines earlier this year when he stormed onto the 100m scene, clocking 9.72s to break the world record in New York in May. Initially, Bolt was using the 100m for “speed work” to improve on his more favored 200m.

Bolt has now run the four fastest 200m times in the world this year, including 19.67s (Athens), 19.76s (London) and 19.83s (Ostrava). His winning run of 19.67s at the Athens Grand Prix in July was the fifth-fastest ever.

Wallace Spearmon of the United States was also disqualified from an apparent bronze medal performance because of a lane violation. In the course of defending his challenge, the US track officials discovered Martina’s error.

BEIJING (AP) — Arms churning high, face twisted in pain as he sprinted toward the finish line, Usain Bolt kept glancing at the clock.

The win in the Olympic 200 meters was a given, his second gold medal of the Beijing Games assured.

This was now about a world record. About racing against history.

Showing just what he can do when he goes all out start to finish, Bolt forged the greatest race ever run Wednesday night under the hazy lights at the Bird’s Nest, heaving his chest toward the finish line — not simply to beat someone for the gold, but to become a part of track’s glorious, and sometimes troubled, lore.

He finished in 19.30 seconds to break Michael Johnson’s 12-year-old world record, one of the most venerable in the books.

“I just blew my mind and blew the world’s mind,” Bolt said.

Insane, Usain.

Officially, he won by an astounding 0.66 second over American Shawn Crawford, the defending Olympic champion. Crawford won the silver medal when Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles, who had finished 0.52 behind Bolt, was disqualified after a U.S. protest for running out of his lane. “It feels like a charity case,” Crawford said.

Either way, it was about four body lengths, the biggest margin in an Olympic 200.

Footnotes to history.

Bolt added the 19.30 — 0.02 better than Johnson’s old mark — to the 9.69 he ran the 100 four nights before when he hot-dogged the final 20 meters to set the world record.

Everyone thought he could’ve done better in the 100 had he run hard the whole way, but the 200 has always been Bolt’s favorite, the one he spent his life on, and this time he saved the showboating for after the race.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was yea high,” Bolt said. “So it means a lot more to me actually than the 100 means.”

After the unrelenting effort with a slight headwind in his face, Bolt sprawled out on the ground, arms and legs outstretched, basking in the roar of the Bird’s Nest crowd and the glow of becoming, quite possibly, the greatest sprinter ever.

Bolt’s name now goes above, or at least beside, every great sprinter to ever put on spikes.

He became the first man to win the 100-200 double at the Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984.

He gets mentioned in the same breath with Johnson, as well as Jesse Owens and any of the other six men to complete the Olympic 100-200 double. Nobody other than Johnson had ever run a 200 in under 19.6 and nobody had broken 9.7 in the 100 before Beijing.

Bolt has done both, the only man ever to break the world record in both sprints in the same Olympics.

Bolt is simply a different kind of runner — coiled power in his 6-foot-5 frame, supposedly too big for success in the 100, but certainly built to run the 200.

“It’s his anatomy,” said Renaldo Nehemiah, the former world record-holder in the 110-meter hurdles. “He’s just blessed with an uncanny frame, an uncanny quickness, a huge competitive heart. And he is having a good time, which I think our sport sorely needs to see.”

Indeed, track and field could use a breath of fresh air after years of bad news, bad characters and failed drug tests that have come close to turning the sport into second-tier Olympic viewing.

(BEIJING, August 20) — Melaine Walker of Jamaica set an Olympic record to win the Women’s 400m Hurdles, emerging victorious over pre-race favorite and rival Sheena Tosta of the United States at the National Stadium on Wednesday, August 20.

Walker, in her Olympic debut, crossed the line in 52.64 seconds to prove that it is not only the Jamaican men who can set Athletics records.

Tosta held on for silver in 53.70, with Tasha Danvers of Great Britain claiming the bronze, her first major championships medal, in a personal best 53.84.

As Walker pulled into the home straight, only Tosta was left to challenge her and the two left the rest of the field behind in a sprint to the line, with Walker pulling away from Tosta over the last 50 meters.

Danvers kicked as she entered the straight but was pushed all the way to the line by Anastasiya Rabchenyuk of Ukraine, who finished fourth, 0.12s behind.

Tiffany Ross-Williams of the United States, the winner of the 2008 US Olympic trials, finished in last place in a disappointing 57.55.

(BEIJING, August 17) — Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser won the gold medal in the Women’s 100m with a personal best time of 10.78 seconds at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Fraser led from the start to finish, well clear of her compatriots Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, who won silver together in identical times of 10.98s.

Silver medalist Sherone Simpson commented on the Jamaican clean sweep of the medals, “We made history. Just like yesterday Bolt [Usain Bolt, Jamaica] set a new world record. We are all great athletes and I’m very excited about the tremendous achievement we’ve made for our country.”

“The guys should have done it too; they had the speed to,” teased Stewart.

It marked only the sixth clean sweep in Olympic Games Women’s Athletics. It was the first time a 100m event had been swept at an Olympic Games level since the US men won all medals in Stockholm in 1912.

Athens silver medalist Lauryn Williams finished fourth in 11.03, which was the best result of the three United States finalists.

“I was thinking the photo finish was between me and Sherone [Simpson],” she said after the race.

Williams’ team-mate Muna Lee recovered from a bad start to claim fifth in 11.07, while Torri Edwards, who came into the race as the season’s fastest woman, finished last in a time of 11.20.

Jeanette Kwakye, the first Briton to reach the sprint final since Heather Oakes in 1984, finished sixth.

Defending Olympic champion Yulia Nestsiarenka of Belarus fell short in the semifinal.

The world record in this event, never really approached before or since, is the controversial 10.49 put up by the late Florence-Griffith Joyner.

Jamaica is now home to the fastest two people on the planet, after Usain Bolt won last night’s Men’s 100m final in dramatic fashion, setting a new world record of 9.69 seconds.

BEIJING – When it comes to Olympic sprints, nobody does it better than the Jamaicans.

The Caribbean island of 2.8 million people capped the first gold-medal sweep of men’s and women’s 100m dashes since 1912 with a rare 1-2-2 sweep of the women’s race. After never winning Olympic gold in the 100M, Jamaica got two in as many days.

Shelly-Ann Fraser won the women’s dash Sunday, pumping her fist as she was clocked in 10.78 seconds. Teammates Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart finished in a dead heat for the silver, 0.20 second back — the same margin Jamaica’s Usain Bolt won by Friday night when he hot-dogged to the finish in 9.69.

Fraser knew she had won and smiled wide, showing those braces, and then went to pick up the green, yellow and black Jamaican flag. It was the widest margin of victory in an Olympic women’s 100 final since 1988, when Florence Griffith-Joyner set the world record.

“When I was thinking about it, I was getting ahead of myself,” Fraser said about a gold medal. “I was like, ‘Calm down. First you need to go out there and do it.”‘

She did, and after she crossed the finish line more than a body length in the lead, reggae music played in the background during a three-minute delay while judges looked at the photo finish. There was no way to split the difference, so Jamaica got the top three spots and didn’t even have to settle for a bronze.

“It’s about time,” Stewart said when asked what the sweep meant. “We’ve been waiting on this. So many great athletes have come so close.”

Jamaica’s big win turned into a giant disappointment for the United States. Lauryn Williams finished fourth, Muna Lee fifth and Torri Edwards last. Lee, the only one of that U.S. trio with another chance for an individual medal — in the 200 — said she thought there was a false start.

Edwards herself said she thought she had false-started. The American team filed a protest, though it was swiftly rejected.

“It was a flagrant and a blatant false start that was not recalled and had tremendous impact on the race,” said Lee’s coach, Vince Anderson, just before the rejection. “But they’re not going to rerun the Olympic 100. Anyone who knows anything knows that.”

Williams didn’t sound like someone who felt she had been cheated.

“We’ve dominated for years, and now it’s their time,” Williams said.

Making it even more impressive is that the woman widely considered Jamaica’s best at this distance, defending world champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, wasn’t even in the field, after failing to qualify at the country’s Olympic trials.

Her spot essentially went to Fraser, the least accomplished of the Jamaican sprinters — at least until now. She is only 21 — same age as Bolt — and didn’t have a time under 11 seconds before this year. The highlight on her resume before now was the silver medal she won as part of the Jamaican relay team at last year’s world championships.

Speaking of relays — it’s not hard to pick a favorite for that women’s 400 relay Friday.

Simpson and Campbell were part of a gold-medal team in Athens four years ago, though it was hard to know whether Jamaica was truly the fastest team because Williams and Marion Jones botched their handoff and the traditionally strong American team didn’t finish the race.

The women’s 100 wasn’t the only U.S. disappointment at the Bird’s Nest on the third day of the Olympic track meet. In the men’s 1,500, the American success story of Bernard Lagat, Leo Manzano and U.S. team flagbearer Lopez Lomong — all naturalized citizens competing for their new country for the first time at the Olympics — came to a sudden halt. All three failed to advance to the final. Lomong and Manzano each finished last in their semifinals.

In other preliminaries, Americans LoLo Jones, Dawn Harper and Damu Cherry also made it through the first round of women’s 100-meter hurdles — with Cherry overcoming flu-like symptoms to earn a wild-card spot and the other two making it by finishing in the top two.

In the women’s 400, three-time U.S. national champion Sanya Richards won her semifinal in 49.90 seconds to move into Tuesday’s finals, where she’ll go for an individual gold to go with the relay gold she won at the Athens Olympics. Americans Mary Wineberg and Dee Dee Trotter each failed to advance.

The night also brought the second world record of the 10-day meet, when Gulnara Galkina-Samitova of Russia finished the first Olympic women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase final in 8 minutes, 58.81 seconds to beat the mark she already held by nearly 3 seconds.

In the night’s final event, the men’s 10,000 meters, Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia defended his title, finishing in an Olympic record 27 minutes, 1.17 seconds to beat countryman Sileshi Sihine.

Haile Gebrselassie, the 1996 and 2000 champion, finished in sixth — unable to cash in on his decision to skip the marathon because of Beijing’s pollution and focus on the shorter race.

Conditions were ideal — weather was clear and breezy with temperatures in the low 70s. The temperature wasn’t much different from earlier in the day, when Romania’s Constantina Tomescu-Dita won the marathon in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 44 seconds.

So much has been made of the weather in Beijing, especially for the long-distance races, but it turned out to not be a problem.

A light rain on the course that began near Tiananmen Square and wound around the Forbidden City before ending at the stadium was a blessing for the runners, who came in ready for muggy air and smog.

“The weather helped me a lot,” said Tomescu-Dita, the 2005 world championship bronze medalist who lives and trains in Boulder, Colo. “I’m very happy because it’s not very, very hot.”

BEIJING (AP)—Shelly-Ann Fraser completed a gold-medal Jamaican sweep of the 100-meter dashes at the Olympics on Sunday, winning the women’s race in 10.78 seconds. Teammates Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart tied for second.

Fraser’s victory came a day after Usain Bolt gave Jamaica the men’s title in world-record time.

As extensive a tradition of stellar sprinting as Jamaica has, the Caribbean island of about 2.8 million people never had won an Olympic gold in the 100 until this weekend.

Fraser won easily, punching the air as she crossed the finish line. Like Bolt, she is 21 years old.

The scoreboard flashed “Photo-Finish” for a couple of minutes before finally showing that Simpson and Stewart were both timed in 10.98—and were both credited with finishing second.

Lauryn Williams and Muna Lee of the United States were fourth and fifth.

As Jamaicans dominate, Americans disappear

BEIJING – The Olympics are all about who shows up when it’s time to show up.

In three nights of track and field at the Bird’s Nest, it’s clear the Americans are not showing up as many had expected. And while there is considerable action left, the U.S. performance so far has to be a concern to American officials sizing up medal counts.

It’s also clear that the Jamaicans — at least in the sprints, races Americans are used to dominating at the Olympics – are showing up big time.

And that is intriguing, indeed.

Jamaicans went 1-2-3 Sunday night in the women’s 100m, a 21-year-old with little international experience, Shelly-Ann Fraser, taking the gold in 10.78 seconds. The Jamaican trio became the first women from the same country to take all three 100m medals at a single Olympic Games or world championships.

The three American women were — obviously — shut out.

Yendi Phillips won the Miss Jamaica World 2007 title and was placed in the top 15 at the Miss World finals. Earlier this year she was given the chance to become the next Digicel Rising Stars host taking over from long-time host Denise Hunt. Other persons who were vying for the spot are TV personalities Renée Garel (Lady Renée ), Miss Jamaica 2006 winner, Sara Lawrence, and contestant Sanique Vacianna.

I am going to give you my honest opinion Yendi Phillips is god damn boring as hell, she needs to be her self and stop trying to be what she can’t and that is Denise Hunt. I don’t know why Denise is no longer the host but they need to get her back on board.

I love Yendi Phillips but I don’t think she’s doing a good job as the Rising Stars host, I am not a professional in tv land but I can definitely identify that she’s a weak host. Maybe they decided to used her because of her beauty but to be the Rising Stars host you have to be ghetto when it’s time to be ghetto especially when they are doing to search for talents on the road.

DJ Craig, Age: 21
I am not going to put all the blame on poor little Yendi because both she and the competition boring. The competition lacks talent from both the contestants and Yendi Phillips. The best Rising Stars season was when Christopher Martin won and I don’t think it’s going to get no better than that for now.

Sedia McDonald, Age: 31
This is so funny because I knew a lot of persons who used to player hate on Denise about her dressing and now that she’s gone them same one saying that she was a better host. But, hey this is Yendi’s first time hosting a major show so let us give her until next season by then she might improve.

Yvonne Williamson, Age: 27
Denise Hunt was a bit boring too when the competition started in its first year but by time the search was done she was way head of her mistakes. You could definitely see a difference. The only problem Denise had after that was dressing – sometimes you have to wonder who is dressing her. Yendi definitely needs more training. I think she would be perfect for a kiddies show.

I don’t know what the judges looking for but they are to be blamed for the poor slate of contestants . Well in my views yendi is boring , she needs to be herself and stop over do it, she is trying very hard to win the hearts of the Jamaican viewers but she ain’t cutting no dash. apart from being pretty to look at she offers nothing else to the show but boredom and annoyance. the contestants are the worst batch in rising stars history and the three judges are to be blame for that selection.

What’s all this player hating on Yendi. I can bet most of these comments were giving by so called ladies who couldn’t even look at Yendi’s shoes much less to walk in them. She is a beautiful young lady who has represented us well at least she will be able to crown the next queen this year and she doesn’t have to hide from the public unlike our pass queen/baby mother the year before. Give her a chance to get in the groove of things. Yendi you gone a lead mi girl keep up the good work and you are doing a great job as the Digicel Rising Stars host and big up to Denise as well, because is the way bad minded people used to cuss her because of her clothes. You can never please Jamaican no matter what you do.

Honestly, Rising Stars sucks this year. The competition lacks talent. I have been watching rising stars for it first started, i usually run home from work just to watch it, now, i don’t even remember about the show.

Yendi??? Is terrible, i think she is trying to be someone she is not. The host is terrible and most of the contestants are very bad.

Kiki is absolutely better than Yendi, I think Rising Stars has lost its ratings for this year.

I think Yendi is a really cool person…but i share the opinion of the other that she nuh ready yet for hosting…what the producers should have done was put her in the chill room so she can improve and get over any nerves she may have…. Honestly right now the chill room with KIki has more vibes than what’s happening on the stage….
Somebody else made this suggestion that maybe the producers should switch Kiki and Yendi and i agree with that suggestion…until i’ll just find something else on tv to bore me!!!!

Mstik all I am saying is that a least this time Yendi will be able to crown the queen unlike the past queen before her. No one is saying that the past queen should have putted the crown before her child. But don’t forget she was in a campaign for safe sex practice where she was telling young girls to stay away from sex or use a protection and she went and did the opposite of what she was preaching so therefore she was not a good role model.
